    The urban scaling hypothesis has improved our understanding of cities; however, rural areas have been neglected. We investigated rural–urban population density scaling in England and Wales using 67 indicators of crime, mortality, property, and age. Most indicators exhibited segmented scaling about a median critical density of 27 people per hectare. Above the critical density, urban regions preferentially attract young adults (25–40 years) and lose older people (> 45 years). Density scale adjusted metrics (DSAMs) were analysed using hierarchical clustering, networks, and self-organizing maps (SOMs) revealing regional differences and an inverse relationship between excess value of property transactions and a range of preventable mortality (e.g. diabetes, suicide, lung cancer). The most striking finding is that age demographics break the expected self-similarity underlying the urban scaling hypothesis. Urban dynamism is fuelled by preferential attraction of young adults and not a fundamental property of total urban population

    A Heteroscedastic Bayesian Generalized Logistic Regression Model with Application to Scaling Problems

    Power law scaling models have been used to understand the complexity of systems as diverse as cities, neurological activity, and rainfall and lightning. In the scaling framework, power laws and standard linear regression methods are widely used to estimate model parameters with assumed normality and fixed variance. Generalized linear models (GLM) can accommodate a wider range of distributions where the chosen distribution must meet the assumptions of the data to prevent model bias. We present a widely applicable Bayesian generalized logistic regression (BGLR) framework to more flexibly model a continuous real response addressing skew and heteroscedasticity. The Generalized Logistic Distribution (GLD) was selected to flexibly model skewed continuous data. This resulted in a nonlinear posterior distribution which may not have an analytical solution which can be solved numerically with Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) methods. We compared the BGLR model to standard and Bayesian normal models having fixed and varying variance when fitting power laws to 759 days of COVID-19 data. The BGLR yielded information beyond existing methods about the evolution of skew and skedasticity while revealing parameter bias of widely used methods. The BGLR flexibly modelled the complex characteristics necessary for an improved understanding of the propagation and dynamics of this infectious disease. The model is generally applicable and can be used as a template for modeling complexity with other distributions

    Discovering Mental Ill Health: 'Problem-Solving' in an English Magistrates' Court

    People with problems of mental ill health are overrepresented in the criminal justice system. Community justice courts have established procedures for ‘problem-solving’ as a way of addressing these and other issues associated with pathways into crime. In this chapter Auburn et al examine problem-solving in one such court in England. The ways in which mental health issues are raised by members of the problem solving team and how signposting is implemented, is examined. Three main questioning forms are identified and the influence that these forms have on the meeting-talk trajectory is discussed. There was a continuum from eliciting ‘no problem’ responses to facilitating claims of mental ill health. Specific ‘diagnostic procedures’ are also identified as important precursors to advice delivery. The clinical relevance of these findings is considered

    Analysis of lower limb internal kinetics and electromyography in elite race walking.

    The aim of this study was to analyse lower limb joint moments, powers and electromyography patterns in elite race walking. Twenty international male and female race walkers performed at their competitive pace in a laboratory setting. The collection of ground reaction forces (1000 Hz) was synchronised with two-dimensional high-speed videography (100 Hz) and electromyography of seven lower limb muscles (1000 Hz). As well as measuring key performance variables such as speed and stride length, normalised joint moments and powers were calculated. The rule in race walking which requires the knee to be extended from initial contact to midstance effectively made the knee redundant during stance with regard to energy generation. Instead, the leg functioned as a rigid lever which affected the role of the hip and ankle joints. The main contributors to energy generation were the hip extensors during late swing and early stance, and the ankle plantarflexors during late stance. The restricted functioning of the knee during stance meant that the importance of the swing leg in contributing to forward momentum was increased. The knee flexors underwent a phase of great energy absorption during the swing phase and this could increase the risk of injury to the hamstring muscles

    The application of communication structures to advanced transport aircraft are addressed. First, a set of avionic functional requirements is established, and a baseline set of avionics equipment is defined that will meet the requirements. Three alternative configurations for this equipment are then identified that represent the evolution toward more dispersed systems. Candidate communication structures are proposed for each system configuration, and these are compared using trade off analyses; these analyses emphasize reliability but also address complexity. Multiplex buses are recognized as the likely near term choice with mesh networks being desirable for advanced, highly dispersed systems
