    Spurious thrombocytopenia

    No full text
Nowadays automated blood cell analysis is being widely used. When the history and physical examination do not suggest a defect in hemostasis, the thrombocyte count is found low in blood with the anticogulants EDTA or citrate although a blood film prepared directly from blood optained by finger puncture reveales normal thrombocytes. This thrombocytopenia is called pseudo or spurious thrombocytopenia. Here, sharing our experience on a pseudothromboctopenic child, we want to point to this topic altough it is less common in pediatric patients than adults. (Turk Arch Ped 2009; 44: 73-4

An unusual ophthalmic presentation of Wolf-Hirschhorn syndrome

    No full text
Purpose: Wolf-Hirschhorn syndrome (WHS) is a rare inherited disease caused by the deletion in short arm of 4(th) chromosome. Various ocular manifestations in WHS have been described previously. We present an extraordinary clinical case of WHS associated with optic nerve head malformation and optic nerve sheath enlargement in the same eye

The Associations Between Lung Ultrasonography Scores in the First Day of Life and Clinical Outcomes

    No full text
Objectives To investigate the role of lung ultrasonography (LU) in predicting noninvasive ventilation (NIV) failure and the relationship between lung ultrasonography scores (LUS) with clinical outcomes in neonatal respiratory failure (NRF)

The effect of simulative heartbeat nest used in preterm new-borns on vital signs, pain, and comfort in Turkey: A randomized controlled study

    No full text
Background: Creating a womb-like environment for the preterm infant is vital to reduce the stress caused by stimuli and facilitate optimal neurological-behavioral development. Purpose: This randomized-controlled study aimed to determine the effect of simulative heartbeat nest use on vital signs, pain level, and comfort in preterms. Methods: The study population consisted of 52 (experiment: 25, control: 27) preterms hospitalized in a university hospitals neonatal intensive care unit between May & ndash;November 2018. Before the application, preterms in both groups were evaluated with PIPP and Comfort scales. The experiment group was monitored in the nest with a heart beating device for 15 min. The control group was observed in the nest without the device for 15 min. Their heartbeats and oxygen saturation were recorded. After the application, preterms in both groups were re-evaluated with PIPP and Comfort scale. Results: There was no statistically significant difference between the groups in terms of gestation week, age, birth weight and height, HB, SaO2, PIPP, and Comfort Scale total scores before and after the application (p > .05). However, the mean SaO2 increased significantly during the application (p < .003) in the experiment group; and that the PIPP total score decreased statistically significantly (p: 0.001) after the application. The comfort scale total score averages of the preterms in both groups decreased statistically significantly after the application (experiment:p <.01; control:p < .05). Implications for practice and research: Preterms in both groups had similar indicators. The nests that create heartbeat provide positive outcomes, such as the standard nests. (c) 2021 Elsevier Inc. Soft tissue sarcoma as a secondary malignancy after radiotherapy in a child with bilateral retinoblastoma

    No full text
Retinoblastoma is the most common intraocular tumor in childhood. There is an increased risk of secondary malignancy in these cases, especially in hereditary retinoblastoma. Here, we report a case with bilateral retinoblastoma who was treated with chemotherapy and radiotherapy, and developed soft tissue sarcoma 14 years later within the radiation field. A 16-year-old girl who had enucleation of the right eye and radiotherapy of the left eye when she was 1 year old, presented with a mass in the maxillary sinus. Biopsy was consistent with low-grade non-rhabdomyosarcoma soft tissue sarcoma. The patient was treated with surgery and chemotherapy, but had multiple recurrences. She received various salvage chemotherapy regimens and multiple surgical procedures, and is alive with disease. There is an increased risk of secondary malignancy in retinoblastoma, especially in the hereditary form. This risk is increased in patients receiving radiotherapy. Tumors may appear within the radiation field even years later

A Multicentered Study on Epidemiologic and Clinical Characteristics of 37 Neonates With Community-acquired COVID-19

Background: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) primarily affects adults and spares children, whereas very little is known about neonates. We tried to define the clinical characteristics, risk factors, laboratory, and imagining results of neonates with community-acquired COVID-19. Methods: This prospective multicentered cohort study included 24 neonatal intensive care units around Turkey, wherein outpatient neonates with COVID-19 were registered in an online national database. Full-term and premature neonates diagnosed with COVID-19 were included in the study, whether hospitalized or followed up as ambulatory patients. Neonates without severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) via reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction testing or whose mothers had been diagnosed with COVID-19 during pregnancy were excluded. Results: Thirty-seven symptomatic neonates were included. The most frequent findings were fever, hypoxemia, and cough (49%, 41%, 27%, respectively). Oxygen administration (41%) and noninvasive ventilation (16%) were frequently required; however, mechanical ventilation (3%) was rarely needed. Median hospitalization was 11 days (1-35 days). One patient with Down syndrome and congenital cardiovascular disorders died in the study period. C-reactive protein (CRP) and prothrombin time (PT) levels were found to be higher in patients who needed supplemental oxygen (0.9 [0.1-8.6] vs. 5.8 [0.3-69.2]p= 0.002, 11.9 [10.1-17.2] vs. 15.2 [11.7-18.0]p= 0.01, respectively) or who were severe/critical (1.0 [0.01-8.6] vs. 4.5 [0.1-69.2]p= 0.01, 11.7 [10.1-13.9] vs. 15.0 [11.7-18.0]p= 0.001, respectively). Conclusions: Symptomatic neonates with COVID-19 had high rates of respiratory support requirements. High CRP levels or a greater PT should alert the physician to more severe disease
