    Inversion algorithms for the microwave remote sensing of soil moisture. Experiments with swept frequency microwaves

    Two experiments were performed employing swept frequency microwaves for the purpose of investigating the reflectivity from soil volumes containing both discontinuous and continuous changes in subsurface soil moisture content. Discontinuous moisture profiles were artificially created in the laboratory while continuous moisture profiles were induced into the soil of test plots by the environment of an agricultural field. The reflectivity for both the laboratory and field experiments was measured using bi-static reflectometers operated over the frequency ranges of 1.0 to 2.0 GHz and 4.0 to 8.0 GHz. Reflectivity models that considered the discontinuous and continuous moisture profiles within the soil volume were developed and compared with the results of the experiments. This comparison shows good agreement between the smooth surface models and the measurements. In particular the comparison of the smooth surface multi-layer model for continuous moisture profiles and the yield experiment measurements points out the sensitivity of the specular component of the scattered electromagnetic energy to the movement of moisture in the soil

The MORAR Hardware Development, Ground Data Processing, and the Mission Operations will allow the accomplishment of these scientific objectives to define globally the topography of Mars at sufficient vertical resolution and spatial scale to address both large-scale geophysical and small-scale geologic problems, and to obtain global surface electrical and scattering properties of the upper several centimeters of the Martian surface for assessment of the composition, physical state, and volatile distribution of the surface

    We develop an explicit and tractable representation of a twist-grain-boundary phase of a smectic A liquid crystal. This allows us to calculate the interaction energy between grain boundaries and the relative contributions from the bending and compression deformations.     Studies of CMB structure at Dec=40. II: Analysis and cosmological interpretation

    We present a detailed analysis of the cosmic microwave background structure in the Tenerife Dec=+40 degrees data. The effect of local atmospheric contributions on the derived fluctuation amplitude is considered, resulting in an improved separation of the intrinsic CMB signal from noise. Our analysis demonstrates the existence of common structure in independent data scans at 15 and 33 GHz. For the case of fluctuations described by a Gaussian auto-correlation function, a likelihood analysis of our combined results at 15 and 33 GHz implies an intrinsic rms fluctuation level of 48^{+21}_{-15} uK on a coherence scale of 4 degrees; the equivalent analysis for a Harrison-Zel'dovitch model gives a power spectrum normalisation of Q_{rms-ps} = 22^{+10}_{-6} uK. The fluctuation amplitude is seen to be consistent at the 68% confidence level with that reported for the COBE two-year data for primordial fluctuations described by a power law model with a spectral index in the range 1.0 \le n \le 1.6. This limit favours the large scale CMB anisotropy being dominated by scalar fluctuations rather than tensor modes from a gravitational wave background. The large scale Tenerife and COBE results are considered in conjunction with observational results from medium scale experiments in order to place improved limits on the fluctuation spectral index; we find n=1.10 +/- 0.10 assuming standard CDM with H_{0}=50 kms^{-1}Mpc^{-1}.Comment: 10 pages LaTeX, including 8 PostScript figures.     Under this contract a number of topics have been studied and analyzed in detail in order to bring together and somewhat extend the concepts of communication theory as they apply to some current problems in digital communication systems. Radio wave channels are characterized by a model\u27 which accounts for both multiplicative and additive disturbances, A large amount of experimental data pertaining to radio disturbances is evaluated and correlated. She. importance of the Rayleigh fading channel is emphasized and previous work is extended to determine the capacity and efficiency of the Rayleigh, channel. Detection theory concepts have been extended to treat the problem of signal detection in the presence of statistically unknown additive disturbances. Several detectors based on non-parametric statistical techniques are treated in detail. Obese detectors are compared to the conventional likelihood detectors. Design procedures are formulated. Signal design techniques are used to optimize transmitted wave- forms and the improvement in system performance is determined. The criterion used in this\u27 analysis is the minimization of intersymbol influence and the minimization of transmitter power for a fixed probability of received, errors . The tradeoffs available between transmitter power and coding complexity are thoroughly investigated for the binary symmetric channel. Results are obtained for both Hamming and Bose-Chandhuri codes. Recommendations for further work in promising areas are made, the need to supplement theoretical work with experimental work is pointed ou

    Effect of replacing dried skim milk with soy products on function and morphology of the small intestine in nursery pigs

    Sixty-six pigs (averaging 21 d of age and 11.8 lb) were used in a 7-d experiment to evaluate the effects of specially processed soy products on function and morphology of the small intestine. Treatments were: 1) corn-milk products control; 2, 3, 4, and 5) simple corn-based diets with either soybean meal, soy isolate2, soy concentrate3, or modified soy flour4 as the major protein source; 6) a high nutrient density diet (HNDD) containing 20% dried skim milk and 20% dried whey; 7, 8, and 9) the HNDD with soy isolate, soy concentrate, or modified soy flour plus lactose replacing 100% of the dried skim milk. Xylose absorption was determined from plasma collected on d 6 post-weaning. On d 7 post-weaning, serum was collected for determination of antisoy titers, and four pigs/trt were sacrificed for collection of tissues to determine villus height and crypt depth. The milk diet was more digestible than the other treatments, and the complex diets were more digestible than the simple diets. Nitrogen from soy isolate and concentrate was more digestible than N from soy flour in the simple diets. Pigs fed diets with the specially processed soy products had lower antisoy titers than pigs fed diets with soybean meal. However, diets with the specially processed soy products resulted in lower xylose absorptions than the diet with soybean meal. Pigs fed the corn-milk products control tended to have longer villi and lower crypt depths than pigs fed the other treatments. In conclusion, it appears that the specially processed soy products were better utilized than soybean meal but of lower nutritional value than milk products. Of the specially processed soy products, soy protein isolate had the greatest nutritional value in simple diets, but the soy products were of similar nutritional value in the complex diets.; Swine Day, Manhattan, KS, November 15, 199

    Dynamic concentration of motors in microtubule arrays

    We present experimental and theoretical studies of the dynamics of molecular motors in microtubule arrays and asters. By solving a convection-diffusion equation we find that the density profile of motors in a two-dimensional aster is characterized by continuously varying exponents. Simulations are used to verify the assumptions of the continuum model. We observe the concentration profiles of kinesin moving in quasi two-dimensional artificial asters by fluorescent microscopy and compare with our theoretical results.Comment: 4pages, 4 figures revte
