Sliderule-like property of Wigner's little groups and cyclic S-matrices for multilayer optics
It is noted that two-by-two S-matrices in multilayer optics can be
represented by the Sp(2) group whose algebraic property is the same as the
group of Lorentz transformations applicable to two space-like and one time-like
dimensions. It is noted also that Wigner's little groups have a sliderule-like
property which allows us to perform multiplications by additions. It is shown
that these two mathematical properties lead to a cyclic representation of the
S-matrix for multilayer optics, as in the case of ABCD matrices for laser
cavities. It is therefore possible to write the N-layer S-matrix as a
multiplication of the N single-layer S-matrices resulting in the same
mathematical expression with one of the parameters multiplied by N. In
addition, it is noted, as in the case of lens optics, multilayer optics can
serve as an analogue computer for the contraction of Wigner's little groups for

The Effect of Carboxylates on the Mg Content of Calcites that Transform from ACC
AbstractIn some skeletal-forming and sedimentary environments, calcite and other CaCO3 polymorphs are produced from an amorphous calcium carbonate (ACC) phase. This experimental study determined the Mg content of calcites that grew in the presence of ACC with/without carboxylated biomolecules. The Mg content of the initial ACC obeys a simple fractionation for all conditions except in the presence of oxydiacetate. For all solution compositions, this ACC transforms into calcite crystallites that contain zero to 38 mole %MgCO3, without evidence of secondary polymorphs (Mg/Ca = 0-15). Mg is in the calcite structure within the resolution of the XRD method. The biomolecules slow the ACC to calcite transformation in proportion to their selectivity for Ca over Mg. Citrate, tartarate, and oxydiacetate increase the amount of Mg in both ACC and the resulting calcite. When the Mg2+/Ca2+ ratios of initial solutions are less than ∼5-8, the Mg content of the ACC and calcite products are similar
Laboratory Experiments of Entrainment in Dry Convective Boundary Layers
Entrainment in dry convective boundary layers was studied. A saline convection tank set-up was used as a laboratory model for a dry convective atmospheric boundary layer. The entrainment flux was measured using planar laser induced fluorescence (PLIF). It was found that the entrainment flux reveals a much stronger dependence on the inversion strength than large eddy simulations tend to do
Translational groups as generators of gauge transformations
We examine the gauge generating nature of the translational subgroup of
Wigner's little group for the case of massless tensor gauge theories and show
that the gauge transformations generated by the translational group is only a
subset of the complete set of gauge transformations. We also show that, just
like the case of topologically massive gauge theories, translational groups act
as generators of gauge transformations in gauge theories obtained by extending
massive gauge noninvariant theories by a Stuckelberg mechanism. The
representations of the translational groups that generate gauge transformations
in such Stuckelberg extended theories can be obtained by the method of
dimensional descent. We illustrate these with the examples of Stuckelberg
extended first class versions of Proca, Einstein-Pauli-Fierz and massive
Kalb-Ramond theories in 3+1 dimensions. A detailed analysis of the partial
gauge generation in massive and massless 2nd rank symmetric gauge theories is
provided. The gauge transformations generated by translational group in 2-form
gauge theories are shown to explicitly manifest the reducibility of gauge

WD + MS systems as the progenitor of SNe Ia
We show the initial and final parameter space for SNe Ia in a () plane and find that the positions of some famous
recurrent novae, as well as a supersoft X-ray source (SSS), RX J0513.9-6951,
are well explained by our model. The model can also explain the space velocity
and mass of Tycho G, which is now suggested to be the companion star of Tycho's
supernova. Our study indicates that the SSS, V Sge, might be the potential
progenitor of supernovae like SN 2002ic if the delayed dynamical-instability
model due to Han & Podsiadlowski (2006) is appropriate. Following the work of
Meng, Chen & Han (2009), we found that the SD model (WD + MS) with an optically
thick wind can explain the birth rate of supernovae like SN 2006X and reproduce
the distribution of the color excess of SNe Ia. The model also predicts that at

Entangled Quantum Clocks for Measuring Proper-Time Difference
We report that entangled pairs of quantum clocks (non-degenerate quantum
bits) can be used as a specialized detector for precisely measuring difference
of proper-times that each constituent quantum clock experiences. We describe
why the proposed scheme would be more precise in the measurement of proper-time
difference than a scheme of two-separate-quantum-clocks. We consider
possibilities that the proposed scheme can be used in precision test of the

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy for wound healing in diabetic rats: Varying efficacy after a clinically-based protocol
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) is a clinical treatment in which a patient breathes pure oxygen for a limited period of time at an increased pressure. Although this therapy has been used for decades to assist wound healing, its efficacy for many conditions is unproven and its mechanism of action is not yet fully clarified. This study investigated the effects of HBOT on wound healing using a diabetes-impaired pressure ulcer rat model. Seven weeks after streptozotocin-induced diabetes in rats (n = 55), a pressure ulcer was created on dorsal skin. Subsequently, animals received HBOT during 6 weeks following a standard clinical protocol (HBOT group with varying endpoints up to 42 days post-wounding) versus controls without HBOT. Capillary venous oxygen saturation (SO2) showed a significant increase in the HBOT group on day 24; however, this increase was significant at this time point only. The quantity of hemoglobin in the micro-blood vessels (rHB) showed a significant decrease in the HBOT group on days 21 and 42, and showed a trend to decrease on day 31. Blood flow in the microcirculation showed a significant increase on days 17, 21 and 31 but a significant decrease on days 24 and 28. Inflammation scoring showed significantly decreased CD68 counts in the HBOT group on day 42, but not in the early stages of wound healing. Animals in the HBOT group showed a trend for an increase in mean wound breaking strength on day 42
Habitable Zones and UV Habitable Zones around Host Stars
Ultraviolet radiation is a double-edged sword to life. If it is too strong,
the terrestrial biological systems will be damaged. And if it is too weak, the
synthesis of many biochemical compounds can not go along. We try to obtain the
continuous ultraviolet habitable zones, and compare the ultraviolet habitable
zones with the habitable zones of host stars. Using the boundary ultraviolet
radiation of ultraviolet habitable zone, we calculate the ultraviolet habitable
zones of host stars with masses from 0.08 to 4.00 \mo. For the host stars with
effective temperatures lower than 4,600 K, the ultraviolet habitable zones are
closer than the habitable zones. For the host stars with effective temperatures
higher than 7,137 K, the ultraviolet habitable zones are farther than the
habitable zones. For hot subdwarf as a host star, the distance of the
ultraviolet habitable zone is about ten times more than that of the habitable
zone, which is not suitable for life existence.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure
Aerosol particles at a high-altitude site on the Southeast Tibetan Plateau, China: Implications for pollution transport from South Asia
Bulk aerosol samples were collected from 16 July 2008 to 26 July 2009 at Lulang, a high-altitude (>3300m above sea level) site on the southeast Tibetan Plateau (TP); objectives were to determine chemical characteristics of the aerosol and identify its major sources. We report aerosol (total suspended particulate, TSP) mass levels and the concentrations of selected elements, carbonaceous species, and water-soluble inorganic ions. Significant buildup of aerosol mass and chemical species (organic carbon, element carbon, nitrate, and sulfate) occurred during the premonsoon, while lower concentrations were observed during the monsoon. Seasonal variations in aerosol and chemical species were driven by precipitation scavenging and atmospheric circulation. Two kinds of high-aerosol episodes were observed: one was enriched with dust indicators (Fe and Ca2+), and the other was enhanced with organic and elemental carbon (OC and EC), SO42−, NO3−, and Fe. The TSP loadings during the latter were 3 to 6 times those on normal days. The greatest aerosol optical depths (National Centers for Environmental Protection/National Center for Atmospheric Research reanalysis) occurred upwind, in eastern India and Bangladesh, and trajectory analysis indicates that air pollutants were transported from the southwest. Northwesterly winds brought high levels of natural emissions (Fe, Ca2+) and low levels of pollutants (SO42−, NO3−, K+, and EC); this was consistent with high aerosol optical depths over the western deserts and Gobi. Our work provides evidence that both geological and pollution aerosols from surrounding regions impact the aerosol population of the TP
Feasibility study: investigation of car park-based V2G services in the UK central hub
The increasing uptake of electric vehicles, and the established practice of long-term parking at stations and airports, offers an opportunity to develop a flexible approach to help with the energy storage dilemma. This paper investigates the feasibility of using a number of EV batteries as an energy storage and grid balancing solution within the UK Central Hub area. Here, the capital cost of the vehicle is a sunk cost to the EV owner. The potential income generated, or discount on long-term parking, is an additional benefit of ownership. This paper considers the income available to a small and large size car park from the different market mechanisms to offer grid support in the UK and contrasts this with the complexity and costs of the EV charging infrastructure required within these types of scheme
