Online Maximum k-Coverage
We study an online model for the maximum k-vertex-coverage problem, where given a graph G = (V,E) and an integer k, we ask for a subset A ⊆ V, such that |A | = k and the number of edges covered by A is maximized. In our model, at each step i, a new vertex vi is revealed, and we have to decide whether we will keep it or discard it. At any time of the process, only k vertices can be kept in memory; if at some point the current solution already contains k vertices, any inclusion of any new vertex in the solution must entail the irremediable deletion of one vertex of the current solution (a vertex not kept when revealed is irremediably deleted). We propose algorithms for several natural classes of graphs (mainly regular and bipartite), improving on an easy 1/2-competitive ratio. We next settle a set-version of the problem, called maximum k-(set)-coverage problem. For this problem we present an algorithm that improves upon former results for the same model for small and moderate values of k
Measuring the Spin of the Higgs Boson
By studying the threshold dependence of the excitation curve and the angular
distribution in Higgs-strahlung at e+e- colliders, e+e- -> HZ, the spin of the
Higgs boson in the Standard Model and related extensions can be determined
unambiguously in a model-independent way.Comment: 10 pages, 1 Postscript figure, sign typo correcte
Optical conductivity in the normal state fullerene superconductors
We calculate the optical conductivity, , in the normal state
fullerene superconductors by self-consistently including the impurity
scatterings, the electron-phonon and electron-electron Coulomb interactions.
The finite bandwidth of the fullerenes is explicitely considered, and the
vertex corection is included Nambu in calculating the renormalized
Green's function. is obtained by calculating the
current-current correlation function with the renormalized Green's function in
the Matsubara frequency and then performing analytic continuation to the real
frequency at finite temperature. The Drude weight in is
strongly suppressed due to the interactions and transfered to the mid-infrared
region around and above 0.06 eV which is somewhat less pronounced and much
broader compared with the expermental observation by DeGiorgi .Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures. To be published in Physical Review B, July 1
H^+ -> W^+ l_i^- l_j^+$ decay in the two Higgs doublet model
We study the lepton flavor violating H^+ -> W^+ l_i^- l_j^+ and the lepton
flavor conserving $H^+ -> W^+ l_i^- l_i^+ (l_i=\tau, l_j=\mu) decays in the
general 2HDM, so called model III. We estimate the decay width \Gamma for LFV
(LFC) at the order of the magnitude of (10^{-11}-10^{-5}) GeV
((10^{-9}-10^{-4}) GeV), for 200 GeV\leq m_{H^\pm}\leq 400
GeV, and the intermediate values of the coupling
\bar{\xi}^{E}_{N,\tau \mu}\sim 5 GeV (\bar{\xi}^{E}_{N,\tau
\tau}\sim 30 GeV). We observe that the experimental result of the process
under consideration can give comprehensive information about the physics beyond
the standard model and the existing free parameters.Comment: 8 pages, 7 Figure
Introducing Small-World Network Effect to Critical Dynamics
We analytically investigate the kinetic Gaussian model and the
one-dimensional kinetic Ising model on two typical small-world networks (SWN),
the adding-type and the rewiring-type. The general approaches and some basic
equations are systematically formulated. The rigorous investigation of the
Glauber-type kinetic Gaussian model shows the mean-field-like global influence
on the dynamic evolution of the individual spins. Accordingly a simplified
method is presented and tested, and believed to be a good choice for the
mean-field transition widely (in fact, without exception so far) observed on
SWN. It yields the evolving equation of the Kawasaki-type Gaussian model. In
the one-dimensional Ising model, the p-dependence of the critical point is
analytically obtained and the inexistence of such a threshold p_c, for a finite
temperature transition, is confirmed. The static critical exponents, gamma and
beta are in accordance with the results of the recent Monte Carlo simulations,
and also with the mean-field critical behavior of the system. We also prove
that the SWN effect does not change the dynamic critical exponent, z=2, for
this model. The observed influence of the long-range randomness on the critical
point indicates two obviously different hidden mechanisms.Comment: 30 pages, 1 ps figures, REVTEX, accepted for publication in Phys.

Spin Measurements in Cascade Decays at the LHC
We systematically study the possibility of determining the spin of new
particles after their discovery at the LHC. We concentrate on angular
correlations in cascade decays. Motivated by constraints of electroweak
precision tests and the potential of providing a Cold Dark Matter candidate, we
focus on scenarios of new physics in which some discrete symmetry guarantees
the existence of stable neutral particles which escape the detector. More
specifically, we compare supersymmetry with another generic scenario in which
new physics particles have the same spin as their Standard Model partners. A
survey of possibilities of observing spin correlations in a broad range of
decay channels is carried out, with interesting ones identified. Rather than
confining ourselves to one "collider friendly" benchmark point (such as SPS1a),
we describe the parameter region in which any particular decay channel is
effective. We conduct a more detailed study of chargino's spin determination in
the decay channel . A scan
over the chargino and neutralino masses is performed. We find that as long as
the spectrum is not too degenerate the prospects for spin determination in this
channel are rather good.Comment: 36 pages, references added, 1 figure modifie
Hydrodynamic flow of expanding Bose-Einstein condensates
We study expansion of quasi-one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC)
after switching off the confining harmonic potential. Exact solution of
dynamical equations is obtained in framework of the hydrodynamic approximation
and it is compared with the direct numerical simulation of the full problem
showing excellent agreement at realistic values of physical parameters. We
analyze the maximum of the current density and estimate the velocity of
expansion. The results of the 1D analysis provides also qualitative
understanding of some properties of BEC expansion observed in experiments.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, RevTeX4. To appear in Physical Review
Effects of genuine dimension-six Higgs operators
We systematically discuss the consequences of genuine dimension-six Higgs
operators. These operators are not subject to stringent constraints from
electroweak precision data. However, they can modify the couplings of the Higgs
boson to electroweak gauge bosons and, in particular, the Higgs
self-interactions. We study the sensitivity to which those couplings can be
probed at future \ee linear colliders in the sub-TeV and in the multi-TeV
range. We find that for GeV with a luminosity of 1 ab the
anomalous and couplings may be probed to about the 0.01 level, and
the anomalous coupling to about the 0.1 level.Comment: 21 pages, 17 figures; typos corrected and references adde
Models for Enhanced Absorption in Inhomogeneous Superconductors
We discuss the low-frequency absorption arising from quenched inhomogeneity
in the superfluid density rho_s of a model superconductor. Such inhomogeneities
may arise in a high-T_c superconductor from a wide variety of sources,
including quenched random disorder and static charge density waves such as
stripes. Using standard classical methods for treating randomly inhomogeneous
media, we show that both mechanisms produce additional absorption at finite
frequencies. For a two-fluid model with weak mean-square fluctuations <(d
rho_s)^2 > in rho_s and a frequency-independent quasiparticle conductivity, the
extra absorption has oscillator strength proportional to the quantity <(d
rho_s)^2>/rho_s, as observed in some experiments. Similar behavior is found in
a two-fluid model with anticorrelated fluctuations in the superfluid and normal
fluid densities. The extra absorption typically occurs as a Lorentzian centered
at zero frequency. We present simple model calculations for this extra
absorption under conditions of both weak and strong fluctuations. The relation
between our results and other model calculations is briefly discussed
The effect of aging on network structure
In network evolution, the effect of aging is universal: in scientific
collaboration network, scientists have a finite time span of being active; in
movie actors network, once popular stars are retiring from stage; devices on
the Internet may become outmoded with techniques developing so rapidly. Here we
find in citation networks that this effect can be represented by an exponential
decay factor, , where is the node age, while other
evolving networks (the Internet for instance) may have different types of
aging, for example, a power-law decay factor, which is also studied and
compared. It has been found that as soon as such a factor is introduced to the
Barabasi-Albert Scale-Free model, the network will be significantly
transformed. The network will be clustered even with infinitely large size, and
the clustering coefficient varies greatly with the intensity of the aging
effect, i.e. it increases linearly with for small values of
and decays exponentially for large values of . At the same time, the
aging effect may also result in a hierarchical structure and a disassortative
degree-degree correlation. Generally the aging effect will increase the average
distance between nodes, but the result depends on the type of the decay factor.
The network appears like a one-dimensional chain when exponential decay is
chosen, but with power-law decay, a transformation process is observed, i.e.,
from a small-world network to a hypercubic lattice, and to a one-dimensional
chain finally. The disparities observed for different choices of the decay
factor, in clustering, average node distance and probably other aspects not yet
identified, are believed to bear significant meaning on empirical data
acquisition.Comment: 8 pages, 9 figures,V2, accepted for publication in Phys. Rev.
