Inversionless gain in a three-level system driven by a strong field and collisions
Inversionless gain in a three-level system driven by a strong external field
and by collisions with a buffer gas is investigated. The mechanism of
populating of the upper laser level contributed by the collision transfer as
well as by relaxation caused by a buffer gas is discussed in detail. Explicit
formulae for analysis of optimal conditions are derived. The mechanism
developed here for the incoherent pump could be generalized to other systems.Comment: RevTeX, 9 pages, 4 eps figure
Galaxy formation and cosmic-ray acceleration in a magnetized universe
We study the linear magneto-hydrodynamical behaviour of a Newtonian cosmology
with a viscous magnetized fluid of finite conductivity and generalise the Jeans
instability criterion. The presence of the field favors the anisotropic
collapse of the fluid, which in turn leads to further magnetic amplification
and to an enhanced current-sheet formation in the plane normal to the ambient
magnetic field. When the currents exceed a certain threshold, the resulting
electrostatic turbulence can dramatically amplify the resistivity of the medium
(anomalous resistivity). This could trigger strong electric fields and
subsequently the acceleration of ultra-high energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) during
the formation of protogalactic structures.Comment: 10 pages, ApJL in pres
Polyclonal epitope mapping reveals temporal dynamics and diversity of human antibody responses to H5N1 vaccination
Novel influenza A virus (IAV) strains elicit recall immune responses to conserved epitopes, making them favorable antigenic choices for universal influenza virus vaccines. Evaluating these immunogens requires a thorough understanding of the antigenic sites targeted by the polyclonal antibody (pAb) response, which single-particle electron microscopy (EM) can sensitively detect. In this study, we employ EM polyclonal epitope mapping (EMPEM) to extensively characterize the pAb response to hemagglutinin (HA) after H5N1 immunization in humans. Cross-reactive pAbs originating from memory B cells immediately bound the stem of HA and persisted for more than a year after vaccination. In contrast, de novo pAb responses to multiple sites on the head of HA, targeting previously determined key neutralizing sites on H5 HA, expanded after the second immunization and waned quickly. Thus, EMPEM provides a robust tool for comprehensively tracking the specificity and durability of immune responses elicited by novel universal influenza vaccine candidates
Azbel-Hofstadter model on triangular lattice revisited
In the present paper, the mean of Lyapunov exponents for the Azbel-Hofstadter
model on the triangular lattice is calculated. It is recently proposed that
[Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 85}, 4920 (2000)], for the case of the square lattice,
this quantity can be related to the logarithm of the partition function of the
two dimensional Ising model and has a connection to the asymptotic bandwidth.
We find that the correspondence of this quantity to the logarithm of the
partition function of the two dimensional Ising model is not complete for the
triangular lattice. Moreover, the detailed connection between this quantity and
the asymptotic bandwidth is not valid. Thus the conclusions for the mean of
Lyapunov exponents suggested previously depend on the lattice geometry.Comment: RevTeX, 4 page, no figur
Multimorbidity in bipolar disorder and under-treatment of cardiovascular disease: a cross sectional study
Background: Individuals with serious mental disorders experience poor physical health, especially increased rates of cardiometabolic morbidity and premature morbidity. Recent evidence suggests that individuals with schizophrenia have numerous comorbid physical conditions which may be under-recorded and under-treated but to date very few studies have explored this issue for bipolar disorder.
Methods:We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of a dataset of 1,751,841 registered patients within 314 primary-care practices in Scotland, U.K. Bipolar disorder was identified using Read Codes recorded within electronic medical records. Data on 32 common chronic physical conditions were also assessed. Potential prescribing inequalities were evaluated by analyzing prescribing data for coronary heart disease (CHD) and hypertension.
Results: Compared to controls, individuals with bipolar disorder were significantly less likely to have no recorded physical conditions (OR 0.59, 95% CI 0.54-0.63) and significantly more likely to have one physical condition (OR 1.27, 95% CI 1.16-1.39), two physical conditions (OR 1.45, 95% CI 1.30-1.62) and three or more physical conditions (OR 1.44, 95% CI 1.30-1.64). People with bipolar disorder also had higher rates of thyroid disorders, chronic kidney disease, chronic pain, chronic obstructive airways disease and diabetes but, surprisingly, lower recorded rates of hypertension and atrial fibrillation. People with bipolar disorder and comorbid CHD or hypertension were significantly more likely to be prescribed no antihypertensive or cholesterol-lowering medications compared to controls, and bipolar individuals with CHD or hypertension were significantly less likely to be on 2 or more antihypertensive agents.
Conclusions: Individuals with bipolar disorder are similar to individuals with schizophrenia in having a wide range of comorbid and multiple physical health conditions. They are also less likely than controls to have a primary-care record of cardiovascular conditions such as hypertension and atrial fibrillation. Those with a recorded diagnosis of CHD or hypertension were less likely to be treated with cardiovascular medications and were treated less intensively. This study highlights the high physical healthcare needs of people with bipolar disorder, and provides evidence for a systematic under-recognition and under-treatment of cardiovascular disease in this group
Arsenic Trioxide Modulates DNA Synthesis and Apoptosis in Lung Carcinoma Cells
Arsenic trioxide, the trade name Trisenox, is a drug used to treat acute promyleocytic leukemia (APL). Studies have demonstrated that arsenic trioxide slows cancer cells growth. Although arsenic influences numerous signal-transduction pathways, cell-cycle progression, and/or apoptosis, its apoptotic mechanisms are complex and not entirely delineated. The primary objective of this research was to evaluate the effects of arsenic trioxide on DNA synthesis and to determine whether arsenic-induced apoptosis is mediated via caspase activation, p38 mitogen–activated protein kinase (MAPK), and cell cycle arrest. To achieve this goal, lung cancer cells (A549) were exposed to various concentrations (0, 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 μg/mL) of arsenic trioxide for 48 h. The effect of arsenic trioxide on DNA synthesis was determined by the [3H]thymidine incorporation assay. Apoptosis was determined by the caspase-3 fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC) assay, p38 MAP kinase activity was determined by an immunoblot assay, and cell-cycle analysis was evaluated by the propidium iodide assay. The [3H]thymidine-incorporation assay revealed a dose-related cytotoxic response at high levels of exposure. Furthermore, arsenic trioxide modulated caspase 3 activity and induced p38 MAP kinase activation in A549 cells. However, cell-cycle studies showed no statistically significant differences in DNA content at subG1 check point between control and arsenic trioxide treated cells
A cytomegalovirus peptide-specific antibody alters natural killer cell homeostasis and ss shared in several autoimmune diseases
Human cytomegalovirus (hCMV), a ubiquitous beta-herpesvirus, has been associated with several autoimmune diseases. However, the direct role of hCMV in inducing autoimmune disorders remains unclear. Here we report the identification of an autoantibody that recognizes a group of peptides with a conserved motif matching the Pp150 protein of hCMV (anti-Pp150) and is shared among patients with various autoimmune diseases. Anti-Pp150 also recognizes the single-pass membrane protein CIP2A and induces the death of CD56bright NK cells, a natural killer cell subset whose expansion is correlated with autoimmune disease. Consistent with this finding, the percentage of circulating CD56bright NK cells is reduced in patients with several autoimmune diseases and negatively correlates with anti-Pp150 concentration. CD56bright NK cell death occurs via both antibody- and complement-dependent cytotoxicity. Our findings reveal that a shared hCMV-induced autoantibody is involved in the decrease of CD56bright NK cells and may thus contribute to the onset of autoimmune disorders
Anomalous coupling effects in exclusive radiative B-meson decays
The top-quark FCNC processes will be searched for at the CERN LHC, which are
correlated with the B-meson decays. In this paper, we study the effects of
top-quark anomalous interactions in the exclusive radiative and decays. With the current experimental data of
the branching ratios, the direct CP and the isospin asymmetries, bounds on the
coupling from and
from decays are derived,
respectively. The bound on from is generally compatible with that from . However, the isospin asymmetry further
restrict the phase of , and the combined bound results
in the upper limit, , which is lower than the
CDF result. For real , the upper bound on is about of the same order as the discovery
potential of ATLAS with an integrated luminosity of . For
decays, the NP contribution is enhanced by a large CKM factor
, and the constraint on coupling is rather
restrictive, . With refined
measurements to be available at the LHCb and the future super-B factories, we
can get close correlations between and the rare
decays, which will be studied directly at the LHC ATLAS and CMS.Comment: 25 pages, 15 figures, pdflate
Effect of microneedles on transdermal permeation enhancement of amlodipine
The present study aimed to investigate the effect of microneedle (MN) geometry parameters like length, density, shape and type on transdermal permeation enhancement of amlodipine (AMLO). Two types of MN devices viz. AdminPatch® arrays (ADM) (0.6, 1.2 and 1.5 mm lengths) and laboratory-fabricated polymeric MNs (PM) of 0.6 mm length were employed. In the case of PMs, arrays were applied thrice at different places within a 1.77-cm2 skin area (PM-3) to maintain the MN density closer to 0.6 mm ADM. Scaling analyses were done using dimensionless parameters like concentration of AMLO (Ct/Cs), thickness (h/L) and surface area of the skin (Sa/L2). Microinjection moulding technique was employed to fabricate PM. Histological studies revealed that the PM, owing to their geometry/design, formed wider and deeper microconduits when compared to ADM of similar length. Approximately 6.84- and 6.11-fold increase in the cumulative amount (48 h) of AMLO permeated was observed with 1.5 mm ADM and PM-3 treatments respectively, when compared to passive permeation amounts. Good correlations (R2 > 0.89) were observed between different dimensionless parameters with scaling analyses. The enhancement in AMLO permeation was found to be in the order of 1.5 mm ADM ≥ PM-3 > 1.2 mm ADM > 0.6 mm ADM ≥PM-1 > passive. The study suggests that MN application enhances the AMLO transdermal permeation and the geometrical parameters of MNs play an important role in the degree of such enhancement
