Neolithic flat-based pots from the Carnac Mounds in the light of Cycladic ‘frying pans’
A rare type of pottery, found in four single graves under earthen mounds in the Carnac region of Brittany, consists of a circular, flat-based vessel with a near-vertical wall. On the basis of the equipment known from elsewhere in the world, it is possible that the morphology of these dishes is related to processes involved in the production of salt. To help us in exploring their function, we chose to compare these vessels with another enigmatic class of pottery from the Cyclades – the socalled ‘frying pans’ – which seems to have functioned in a similar way, as an object-sign, and has been found in a maritime milieu and in high-status contexts.V zemljeni gomili v regiji Carnac v Bretaniji smo v štirih posameznih grobovih odkrili nov tip posode, za katero je značilna krožna oblika z ravnim dnom in skoraj navpično steno.
The Clos-Henry excavation at Château-Gontier (Mayenne) revealed – in addition to a “VSG” early Neolithic pit – a modest late La Tene farmstead, a rectangular enclosure with internal partition 2400 sq. m. in area. In spite of the restricted number of features identified (less than 40 post-holes), four timber-framed buildings have been distinguished. The relatively short occupation of the site (one or two generations) visualises an agricultural unit consisting of a main building associated with some granary-type annexes. The whole is established during the second half of 2nd century BC and abandonned by the middle of the following century
Wafer-scale detachable monocrystalline Germanium nanomembranes for the growth of III-V materials and substrate reuse
Germanium (Ge) is increasingly used as a substrate for high-performance
optoelectronic, photovoltaic, and electronic devices. These devices are usually
grown on thick and rigid Ge substrates manufactured by classical wafering
techniques. Nanomembranes (NMs) provide an alternative to this approach while
offering wafer-scale lateral dimensions, weight reduction, limitation of waste,
and cost effectiveness. Herein, we introduce the Porous germanium Efficient
Epitaxial LayEr Release (PEELER) process, which consists of the fabrication of
wafer-scale detachable monocrystalline Ge NMs on porous Ge (PGe) and substrate
reuse. We demonstrate monocrystalline Ge NMs with surface roughness below 1 nm
on top of nanoengineered void layer enabling layer detachment. Furthermore,
these Ge NMs exhibit compatibility with the growth of III-V materials.
High-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) characterization shows
Ge NMs crystallinity and high-resolution X-ray diffraction (HRXRD) reciprocal
space mapping endorses high-quality GaAs layers. Finally, we demonstrate the
chemical reconditioning process of the Ge substrate, allowing its reuse, to
produce multiple free-standing NMs from a single parent wafer. The PEELER
process significantly reduces the consumption of Ge during the fabrication
process which paves the way for a new generation of low-cost flexible
optoelectronics devices.Comment: 17 pages and 6 figures along with 3 figures in supporting informatio
Combining Silicon with III-V materials represents a promising pathway to overcome the ≈29% efficiency limit of a single c-Si solar cell. While the standard approach is to grow III-V materials on Si, this work deals with an innovative way of fabricating tandem solar cells. We use an inverted metamorphic approach in which crystalline silicon or SiGe is directly grown on III-V materials by PECVD. The low temperature of this process (1 µm) of Si on an inverted AlGaAs solar cells followed by a TJ. The bonding and process of this final device is then performed, leading, as a next step, to the electrical measurement of the very first tandem solar cell grown by inverted metamorphic growth of Si on III-V.La limite théorique d’efficacité d’une cellule solaire simple jonction est de ~29 %.
