    Optimization of Production Plan of Hebron Drinks using Operational Research Technique

    Manufacturing companies frequently face challenging operational problems. In such business environment, operations that compete for the same resources must be planned in a way that deadlines are met. Certain expertise in optimization is often required for successful solution of these problems. In this paper, we attempted to optimize the production plan of a manufacturing company - Hebron Drinks, by minimizing the Labour hours, Marching hours and Materials used in producing six different types of products. Linear programming technique was use to model the production plan of Hebron Drinks. The resulted model was solved using simplex method with the aid of computer software (LIP Solver 1.11.1 and 1.11.0). The optimal value obtained shows a reduction in the total cost of production for the period considered

    Geoelectric Survey of Foundation Beds of the Proposed Faculty of Engineering Building, OSUTECH Permanent Site, Okitipupa, Nigeria

    Geoelectric resistivity method was employed to characterize the geo-materials at Ondo State University of Science and Technology (OSUSTECH) Okitipupa, Dahomey Basin, Nigeria, for suitability for foundation purposes. The methods involved Constant Separation Traversing (CST) using Wenner array and Vertical Electrical Sounding (VES) using Schlumberger array. The data obtained were processed with Ipi2win and excel software. The results showed that the subsurface structures were made up of lateritic topsoil with resistivity varying from 85 Ohm-m to 612 Ohm-m and thickness varying from 0.5 to 2.14 m; clayed sand with resistivity varying from 295 to 2,587 ohm-m and thickness vary from 0.67 to 3.4; clay with resistivity varying from 10 to 350 ohm-m and thickness varying from 3.8 to 26 m; and sand with resistivity ranging from 383 ohm-m to 59,707ohm-m. The clayed sand would have been the best layer to host the foundation because of its depth to the surface but it is generally less than 1.5 m and underlay by thick column of clay. The only competent layer that can host the foundation of high-rise building is the sand layer, therefore, the building foundation should be piled to the sand layer or pilling should be suspended within the thick column of clay

    Livestock Browsing Threatens the Survival of Balanites aegyptiaca Seedlings and Saplings in Dinder Biosphere Reserve, Sudan

    This research article published by Taylor & Francis Online, 2021While the impact of livestock grazing has been frequently assessed for grasses, little is known about how livestock affects tree seedlings and saplings. We explored the effects of goat, cattle and camel browsing on the survival of Balanites aegyptiaca seedlings and saplings, a broadleaved evergreen tree species indigenous to Sudan, in Dinder Biosphere Reserve-Sudan (DBR). We used a stratified sampling design with four sites: GOA (mainly browsed by goats), CAT and CAM being mainly browsed by cattle and camels, respectively, while CON was a control area without any livestock browsing. We tested the survival, mortality and recovery of seedlings and saplings across different sites. Our results revealed that mortalities of seedlings in GOA were almost four times higher than that of CAM and CON and twice that of CAT (F3,196 = 100.39, P < .001). Further, sapling mortality was three times higher in GOA than that observed in CAT and CON (F3,196 = 73.4, P < .001). We found that seedlings recover better than saplings, and, unexpectedly, goat browsing severely affected the natural regeneration of B. aegyptiaca in DBR compared to other livestock species. Our study findings contribute to sustainable forest management and show that particularly goat browsing needs to be suppressed for conservation of vulnerable tree species

    IDENTIFICATION OF TSUNAMIGENIC EARTHQUAKE ZONES IN OCEANIC RIDGES AND TRENCHES

    Tsunamigenic earthquakes have been known for their near and far field catastrophic impacts on coastal areas near oceanic ridges and trenches, as well as near tectonic faults in closed and semi-enclosed seas. Not all regions of oceanic ridges and trenches are tsunamigenic earthquake zones, but knowledge of the weighted sum of released earthquake energy and of the Gutenberg-Richter relation of the „a‟ and „b‟ parameters are needed to better identify them as to their potential for tsunami generation. The present analysis was undertaken in order to better identify tsunamigenic zones near oceanic ridges and trenches in the Mid-Atlantic, in the Pacific, in Chile, in Japan, near the Aleutians and along the Peru-Chile trench. The weighted sum of earthquake energy released and of the Gutenberg-Richter relation parameters were evaluated to identify tsunamigenic earthquake zones along these locations. The present analysis of the Gutenberg-Richter relation of the „a‟ and „b‟ parameters indicates that tsunamigenic earthquakes do not occur frequently along the Aleutian Trench, although the historic record supports that destructive tsunamis have occurred along this region in the past. Of the oceanic ridges, the results of the present analysis indicate that the Mid-Atlantic Ridge is the most active tsunamigenic zone, while of all the oceanic trenches, the Japan Trench is the most active

    A New Polarization-Reconfigurable Antenna for 5G Wireless Communications

    YesThis paper presents a circular polarization reconfigurable antenna for 5G applications, which is compact in size and has good axial ratio and frequency response. The proposed microstrip antenna is designed on a FR-4 substrate with a relative dielectric constant of 4.3 and has a maximum size of 30×30 mm2 with 50 Ω coaxial probe feeding. This design has two PIN diode switches controlling reconfiguration between right hand circular polarization (RHCP) and left hand circular polarization (LHCP). To achieve reconfigurability, a C-slot rectangular patch antenna with truncated corner techniques is employed by cutting off two corners on the radiating patch. The proposed antenna has been simulated using CST microwave studio software: it has 3.35-3.77 GHz and 3.4-3.72 GHz bands for both states of reconfiguration, and each is suitable for 5G applications with a good axial ratio of less than 1.8 dB and good gain of 4.8 dB for both modes of operation.Innovation programme under grant agreement H2020-MSCA-ITN-2016 SECRET-722424, UK Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) under grant EP/E022936/1

    Ground Magnetic Attributes For Subsurface Structural Analysis of Foundation Beds in a Sedimentary Terrain in Southwestern Nigeria: OSUSTECH Permanent Site as a case study

    The structural failure such as subsidence, collapse and cracking of the walls of buildings in Nigeria has posed a threat or a significant potential hazard to the community in the affected areas. These hazards include gross loss of valuable lives and properties that always accompany such structural failure. Therefore there is need for subsurface structural analysis. The Stop-And-Go method was used for the acquisition of the data. This method is good for subsurface investigation at depths below 30 metres (100 feet). Data for this study were taken at a 10 metres station spacing which is about half that of the expected depth of target. The method requires the technique of measuring total field components at discrete points along the traverses distributed regularly throughout the survey area of interest. The raw data were processed to remove diurnal variations from the total field data measured from the base station. Interpretation of the ground magnetic data revealed that the study area comprises zones underlain with thin to thick overburden. In all the profiles, the regions A and B are associated with the high magnetic values except in the profile 4 in which only region E is associated with high magnetic values. Thus, the region E in the profile 4; the regions A and B in the profiles 1, 2, 3 and 5 are competent zones for the sitting of structures. It can be deduced that the regions of high magnetic susceptibility and high resistivity are competent zones for construction of high rise buildings and other engineering structures. While the regions of low magnetic susceptibility and low resistivity could pose problem of subsidence of the buildings around the region
