Infrared diode laser spectroscopy of the fundamental band of NF(a1Î)
Thirty-one lines of the fundamental vibrationârotation band of the NF free radical in its a 1 state have been detected in absorption near 8.6 ”m using a tunable infrared diode laser. Linewidths were Doppler limited and several transitions were accompanied by resolved hyperfine structure due to fluorine and nitrogen nuclear moments. Wave number calibration using accurately determined N2O lines yielded v0 = 1165.952±0.001 cm^â1 for the band center. Rotational and centrifugal distortion constants for both v = 0 and 1 states have also been determined
Three-Body Encounters of Black Holes in Globular Clusters
Evidence has been mounting for the existence of black holes with masses from
10^2 to 10^4 M_Solar associated with stellar clusters. Such intermediate-mass
black holes (IMBHs) will encounter other black holes in the dense cores of
these clusters. The binaries produced in these interactions will be perturbed
by other objects as well thus changing the orbital characteristics of the
binaries. These binaries and their subsequent mergers due to gravitational
radiation are important sources of gravitational waves. We present the results
of numerical simulations of high mass ratio encounters, which help clarify the
interactions of intermediate-mass black holes in globular clusters and help

Facing Non-Stationary Conditions with a New Indicator of Entropy Increase: The Cassandra Algorithm
We address the problem of detecting non-stationary effects in time series (in
particular fractal time series) by means of the Diffusion Entropy Method (DEM).
This means that the experimental sequence under study, of size , is explored
with a window of size . The DEM makes a wise use of the statistical
information available and, consequently, in spite of the modest size of the
window used, does succeed in revealing local statistical properties, and it
shows how they change upon moving the windows along the experimental sequence.
The method is expected to work also to predict catastrophic events before their

Low-dose alum application trialled as a management tool for internal nutrient loads in Lake Okaro, New Zealand
Aluminium sulfate (alum) was applied to Lake Okaro, a eutrophic New Zealand lake with recurrent cyanobacterial blooms, to evaluate its suitability for reducing trophic status and bloom frequency. The dose yielded 0.6 g aluminium mâ3 in the epilimnion. Before dosing, pH exceeded 8 in epilimnetic waters but was optimal for flocculation (6â8) below 4 m depth. After dosing, there was no significant change in water clarity, hypolimnetic pH decreased to 5.5, and soluble aluminium exceeded recommended guidelines for protection of freshwater organisms. Epilimnetic phosphate concentrations decreased from 40 to 5 mg mâ3 and total nitrogen (TN):total phosphorus (TP) mass ratios increased from 7:1 to 37:1. The dominant phytoplankton species changed from Anabaena spp. before dosing, to Ceratium hirudinella , then Staurastrum sp. after dosing. Detection of effectiveness of dosing may have been limited by sampling duration and design, as well as the low alum dose. The decrease in hypolimnetic pH and epilimnetic TP, and increase in Al3+ and chlorophyll a, are attributed to the low alkalinity lake water and coincidence of alum dosing with a cyanobacterial bloom and high pH
A study of transport suppression in an undoped AlGaAs/GaAs quantum dot single-electron transistor
We report a study of transport blockade features in a quantum dot
single-electron transistor, based on an undoped AlGaAs/GaAs heterostructure. We
observe suppression of transport through the ground state of the dot, as well
as negative differential conductance at finite source-drain bias. The
temperature and magnetic field dependence of these features indicate the
couplings between the leads and the quantum dot states are suppressed. We
attribute this to two possible mechanisms: spin effects which determine whether
a particular charge transition is allowed based on the change in total spin,
and the interference effects that arise from coherent tunneling of electrons in
the dot
Mass inflation in a D dimensional Reissner-Nordstrom black hole: a hierarchy of particle accelerators ?
We study the geometry inside the event horizon of perturbed D dimensional
Reissner-Nordstrom-(A)dS type black holes showing that, similarly to the four
dimensional case, mass inflation also occurs for D>4. First, using the
homogeneous approximation, we show that an increase of the number of spatial
dimensions contributes to a steeper variation of the metric coefficients with
the areal radius and that the phenomenon is insensitive to the cosmological
constant in leading order. Then, using the code reported in arXiv:0904.2669
[gr-qc] adapted to D dimensions, we perform fully non-linear numerical
simulations. We perturb the black hole with a compact pulse adapting the pulse
amplitude such that the relative variation of the black hole mass is the same
in all dimensions, and determine how the black hole interior evolves under the
perturbation. We qualitatively confirm that the phenomenon is similar to four
dimensions as well as the behaviour observed in the homogeneous approximation.
We speculate about the formation of black holes inside black holes triggered by
mass inflation, and about possible consequences of this scenario.Comment: 8 pages, 6 figure
Impacts of energy efficiency retrofitting measures on indoor PM concentrations across different income groups in England: a modelling study
As part of an effort to reduce carbon emissions in the UK, policies encouraging the energy-efficient retrofit of domestic properties are being implemented. Typical retrofits, including installation of insulation and double glazing can cause tightening of the building envelope which may affect indoor air quality (IAQ) impacting occupant health. Using the example of PM (an airborne pollutant with known health impacts), this study considers the influence of energy-efficient retrofits on indoor PM concentrations in domestic properties both above and below the low-income threshold (LIT) for a range of tenancies across England. Simulations using EnergyPlus and its integrated Generic Contaminant model are employed to predict indoor PM exposures from both indoor and outdoor sources in building archetypes representative of (i) the existing housing stock and (ii) a retrofitted English housing stock. The exposures of occupants for buildings occupied by groups above and below the LIT are then estimated under current conditions and following retrofits. One-way ANOVA tests were applied to clarify results and investigate differences between the various income and tenure groups. Results indicate that all tenures below the LIT experience greater indoor PM concentrations than those above, suggesting possible social inequalities driven by housing, leading to consequences for health
