    Cosmic evolution of extragalactic C 1, C 2, and CO luminosity

    Carbon is the fourth most abundant element in the Galaxy with an abundance of approximately 4 x 10(exp -4) relative to hydrogen. Of all abundant metals it is the easiest to observe in the interstellar medium (ISM). Carbon can be found in four dominant forms: dust grains, C 2, C 1, and CO. The latter is the most abundant molecule (next to H2) in molecular clouds. All three gas-phase forms produce strong sub-mm wavelength emission lines and are the principal tracers of the warm and dense neutral phases of the ISM. We calculate the gas-phase abundances of neutral carbon (C 1), ionized carbon (C 2), and carbon monoxide (CO) as a function of cosmic time or redshift z in an idealized scenario of galactic evolution

    Light Assisted Collisional Loss in a 85/87^{85/87}Rb Ultracold Optical Trap

    We have studied hetero- and homonuclear excited state/ground state collisions by loading both 85^{85}Rb and 87^{87}Rb into a far off resonant trap (FORT). Because of the relatively weak confinement of the FORT, we expect the hyperfine structure of the different isotopes to play a crucial role in the collision rates. This dependence on hyperfine structure allows us to measure collisions associated with long range interatomic potentials of different structure: such as long and short ranged; or such as purely attractive, purely repulsive, or mixed attractive and repulsive. We observe significantly different loss rates for different excited state potentials. Additionally, we observe that some collisional channels' loss rates are saturated at our operating intensities (~15 mW/cm2^{2}). These losses are important limitations in loading dual isotope optical traps.Comment: about 8 pages, 5 figure

    Determination of the Baryon Density from Large Scale Galaxy Redshift Surveys

    We estimate the degree to which the baryon density, Ωb\Omega_{b}, can be determined from the galaxy power spectrum measured from large scale galaxy redshift surveys, and in particular, the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. A high baryon density will cause wiggles to appear in the power spectrum, which should be observable at the current epoch. We assume linear theory on scales ≥20h−1Mpc\geq 20h^{-1}Mpc and do not include the effects of redshift distortions, evolution, or biasing. With an optimum estimate of P(k)P(k) to k∼2π/(20h−1Mpc)k\sim 2\pi/(20 h^{-1} Mpc), the 1σ1 \sigma uncertainties in Ωb\Omega_{b} are roughly 0.07 and 0.016 in flat and open (Ω0=0.3\Omega_{0}=0.3) cosmological models, respectively. This result suggests that it should be possible to test for consistency with big bang nucleosynthesis estimates of Ωb\Omega_{b} if we live in an open universe.Comment: 23 Pages, 10 Postscript figure

    The Development of the WISE (Writing to Inspire Successful Education) Writing Mentoring Program: A University-School Collaboration

    Abstract This paper describes the development of a service learning writing mentoring program designed to close the achievement gap in writing proficiency for economically disadvantaged seventh grade students. Compared to writing mentoring studies found in the published literature, this program has three distinguishing components. First, it focused on economically disadvantaged middle school students. Second, it provided writing mentoring through a university-school partnership in which college students provided the intervention in collaboration with a seventh-grade teacher. Third, the program used technology to facilitate the mentoring process. Over the course of an academic year, mentors created videos with feedback on 19 writing assignments. The writing mentoring program was associated with a four-fold increase in the percentage of students who were graded as ‘proficient’ on a state standardized writing exam. These results suggest that semi-virtual, intensive writing mentoring and individualized feedback from college students can close the achievement gap and improve the quality of middle level education provided to economically disadvantaged students

    The authors profile the field of astronomy, identify some of the key scientific questions that can be addressed during the decade of the 1990's, and recommend several facilities that are critically important for answering these questions. Scientific opportunities for the 1990' are discussed. Areas discussed include protoplanetary disks, an inventory of the solar system, primitive material in the solar system, the dynamics of planetary atmospheres, planetary rings and ring dynamics, the composition and structure of the atmospheres of giant planets, the volcanoes of IO, and the mineralogy of the Martian surface. Critical technology developments, proposed projects and facilities, and recommendations for research and facilities are discussed

    Bioaccessibility performance data for fifty-seven elements in guidance material BGS 102

    BGS 102, a guidance material for bioaccessible arsenic (As) and lead (Pb), was produced during validation of the in vitro Unified Bioaccessibility Method (UBM). This paper reports a compilation of reproducible bioaccessible guidance values for fifty-five additional elements in BGS 102, providing guidance for analysts to broaden the scope of UBM analyses for a wider range of elements based on data collected over an average of 60 separate analytical batches per element. Data are presented in categories for both gastric (STOM) and gastrointestinal (STOM + INT) extraction phases, where reproducibility, measured as relative standard deviation (RSD) was; ≤ 10% RSD for 27 elements (Mg, Al, Si, P, Ca, Cr, Mn, Co, Ni, As, Rb, Sr, Y, Ba, La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Tb, Gd, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb); between 10 and 20% RSD for 10 elements (Li, K, V, Fe, Cu, Zn, Cd, Lu, Pb, U); and ≥ 20% RSD for 19 elements in the gastric phase (Be, B, S, Ti, Ga, Se, Zr, Nb, Mo, Ag, Sn, Sb, Cs, Hf, Ta, W, Tl, Bi, Th). Two elements (Mg, Rb) met the ≤ 10% RSD criteria in the UBM gastrointestinal extraction phase due to the alkaline conditions of this phase precipitating out the majority of determinands. Certain elements, including Na, K, Zn and Se, were found to be a significant component of the extraction fluids with proportionally higher concentrations compared to the guidance material. Bioaccessible fractions (%BAF) were also calculated, but were found to be a less reproducible format for confirming the accuracy of measurements. The low concentration of some elements of interest in BGS 102, such as antimony (Sb), justifies the preparation of an alternative certified reference material (CRM). This paper presents an opportunity to broaden the scope of the UBM method to address food security issues (e.g. Fe and Zn micronutrient deficiencies) and contributions to dietary intake from extraneous dust or soil through evidence of the analytical possibilities and current limitations requiring further investigation
