    Microgeographic Variation in the Mexican Vole, Microtus mexicanus

    Altitudinal variation was assessed in 115 (62 male; 53 female) Mexican voles (Microtus mexicanus) from six localities in Jalisco, Mexico. Univariate and multivariate statistical techniques were employed in the data analyses. A total of 49 skeletal measurements were investigated, and of these, 17 showed significant interlocality variation. Rostral breadth, depth of braincase, rostral height, width of third molar and nasal length were found to be the most variable characters. Component I (a size factor) accounted for 36% of the total phenetic variation; components II and III accounted for 30% and 19%, respectively. Larger individuals were found to occur at lower altitudes; smaller individuals occurred at higher altitudes. Size variation was expressed in reverse to Bergmann\u27s Ecogeographical Rule

    First paragraph: On 30 March 2018, the science of mammalogy and the American Society of Mammalogists lost one of the most influential figures of the last half-century. Robert James Baker died quietly at his home in Lubbock, Texas (Fig. 1). He was born on 8 April 1942 to James Simeon Baker and Laura Cooper in Warren, Arkansas. His father was killed during World War II and his mother remarried, resulting in his growing up with six half-siblings. According to Robert’s autobiography in Going afield (330—number refers to specific publication in “Bibliography”), he spent a good deal of his youth with his grandparents on a 100-acre farm in the West Gulf Coastal Plain of southeastern Arkansas. He identified his maternal grandmother, “Grandma Rosie,” as his best friend and his greatest influence during these years. His marriage to Jean Joyner on 19 August 1961 ended in divorce in 1975, but the marriage resulted in a daughter, April Baker-Padilla, and two grandchildren, Jason Baker and Faith Padilla. Robert was married to his wife of 39 years, Laura Kyle (M.D.), on 28 May 1978 in Lubbock. Their son, Robert Kyle Baker, preceded his father in death, which was a tragedy from which neither Robert nor Laura ever completely recovered

    Superconductivity in Metal-mixed Ion-Implanted Polymer Films

    Ion-implantation of normally insulating polymers offers an alternative to depositing conjugated organics onto plastic films to make electronic circuits. We used a 50 keV nitrogen ion beam to mix a thin 10 nm Sn/Sb alloy film into the sub-surface of polyetheretherketone (PEEK) and report the low temperature properties of this material. We observed metallic behavior, and the onset of superconductivity below 3 K. There are strong indications that the superconductivity does not result from a residual thin-film of alloy, but instead from a network of alloy grains coupled via a weakly conducting, ion-beam carbonized polymer matrix.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure

    Measurements of double-helicity asymmetries in inclusive J/ψJ/\psi production in longitudinally polarized p+pp+p collisions at s=510\sqrt{s}=510 GeV

    We report the double helicity asymmetry, ALLJ/ψA_{LL}^{J/\psi}, in inclusive J/ψJ/\psi production at forward rapidity as a function of transverse momentum pTp_T and rapidity y|y|. The data analyzed were taken during s=510\sqrt{s}=510 GeV longitudinally polarized pp++pp collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) in the 2013 run using the PHENIX detector. At this collision energy, J/ψJ/\psi particles are predominantly produced through gluon-gluon scatterings, thus ALLJ/ψA_{LL}^{J/\psi} is sensitive to the gluon polarization inside the proton. We measured ALLJ/ψA_{LL}^{J/\psi} by detecting the decay daughter muon pairs μ+μ\mu^+ \mu^- within the PHENIX muon spectrometers in the rapidity range 1.2<y<2.21.2<|y|<2.2. In this kinematic range, we measured the ALLJ/ψA_{LL}^{J/\psi} to be 0.012±0.0100.012 \pm 0.010~(stat)~±\pm~0.0030.003(syst). The ALLJ/ψA_{LL}^{J/\psi} can be expressed to be proportional to the product of the gluon polarization distributions at two distinct ranges of Bjorken xx: one at moderate range x0.05x \approx 0.05 where recent RHIC data of jet and π0\pi^0 double helicity spin asymmetries have shown evidence for significant gluon polarization, and the other one covering the poorly known small-xx region x2×103x \approx 2\times 10^{-3}. Thus our new results could be used to further constrain the gluon polarization for x<0.05x< 0.05.Comment: 335 authors, 10 pages, 4 figures, 3 tables, 2013 data.     Screening of healthcare workers for SARS-CoV-2 highlights the role of asymptomatic carriage in COVID-19 transmission.

    Significant differences exist in the availability of healthcare worker (HCW) SARS-CoV-2 testing between countries, and existing programmes focus on screening symptomatic rather than asymptomatic staff. Over a 3 week period (April 2020), 1032 asymptomatic HCWs were screened for SARS-CoV-2 in a large UK teaching hospital. Symptomatic staff and symptomatic household contacts were additionally tested. Real-time RT-PCR was used to detect viral RNA from a throat+nose self-swab. 3% of HCWs in the asymptomatic screening group tested positive for SARS-CoV-2. 17/30 (57%) were truly asymptomatic/pauci-symptomatic. 12/30 (40%) had experienced symptoms compatible with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19)>7 days prior to testing, most self-isolating, returning well. Clusters of HCW infection were discovered on two independent wards. Viral genome sequencing showed that the majority of HCWs had the dominant lineage B∙1. Our data demonstrates the utility of comprehensive screening of HCWs with minimal or no symptoms.     Inclusive cross section and double-helicity asymmetry for π0\pi^{0} production at midrapidity in pp++pp collisions at s=510\sqrt{s}=510 GeV

    PHENIX measurements are presented for the cross section and double-helicity asymmetry (ALLA_{LL}) in inclusive π0\pi^0 production at midrapidity from pp++pp collisions at s=510\sqrt{s}=510~GeV from data taken in 2012 and 2013 at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. The next-to-leading-order perturbative-quantum-chromodynamics theory calculation is in excellent agreement with the presented cross section results. The calculation utilized parton-to-pion fragmentation functions from the recent DSS14 global analysis, which prefer a smaller gluon-to-pion fragmentation function. The π0ALL\pi^{0}A_{LL} results follow an increasingly positive asymmetry trend with pTp_T and s\sqrt{s} with respect to the predictions and are in excellent agreement with the latest global analysis results. This analysis incorporated earlier results on π0\pi^0 and jet ALLA_{LL}, and suggested a positive contribution of gluon polarization to the spin of the proton ΔG\Delta G for the gluon momentum fraction range x>0.05x>0.05. The data presented here extend to a currently unexplored region, down to x0.01x\sim0.01, and thus provide additional constraints on the value of ΔG\Delta G. The results confirm the evidence for nonzero ΔG\Delta G using a different production channel in a complementary kinematic region.Comment: 413 authors, 8 pages, 4 figures. v2 is version accepted as PRD Rapid Communication.     ϕ\phi meson production in dd++Au collisions at sNN=200\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200 GeV

    The PHENIX experiment has measured ϕ\phi meson production in dd++Au collisions at sNN=200\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200 GeV using the dimuon and dielectron decay channels. The ϕ\phi meson is measured in the forward (backward) dd-going (Au-going) direction, 1.2<y<2.21.2<y<2.2 (2.2<y<1.2-2.2<y<-1.2) in the transverse-momentum (pTp_T) range from 1--7 GeV/cc, and at midrapidity y<0.35|y|<0.35 in the pTp_T range below 7 GeV/cc. The ϕ\phi meson invariant yields and nuclear-modification factors as a function of pTp_T, rapidity, and centrality are reported. An enhancement of ϕ\phi meson production is observed in the Au-going direction, while suppression is seen in the dd-going direction, and no modification is observed at midrapidity relative to the yield in pp++pp collisions scaled by the number of binary collisions.     Systematic study of charged-pion and kaon femtoscopy in Au++Au collisions at sNN\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200 GeV

    We present a systematic study of charged pion and kaon interferometry in Au++Au collisions at sNN\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200 GeV. The kaon mean source radii are found to be larger than pion radii in the outward and longitudinal directions for the same transverse mass; this difference increases for more central collisions. The azimuthal-angle dependence of the radii was measured with respect to the second-order event plane and similar oscillations of the source radii were found for pions and kaons. Hydrodynamic models qualitatively describe the similar oscillations of the mean source radii for pions and kaons, but they do not fully describe the transverse-mass dependence of the oscillations.Comment: 499 authors, 27 pages, 13 figures, and 11 tables. v2 is the version accepted for publication in Phys.
