Towards Understanding the Benefits and Challenges of Demand Responsive Public Transit- A Case Study in the City of Charlotte, NC

Access to adequate public transportation plays a critical role in inequity and socio-economic mobility, particularly in low-income communities. Low-income workers who rely heavily on public transportation face a spatial disparity between home and work, which leads to higher unemployment, longer job searches, and longer commute times. The overarching goal of this study is to get initial data that would result in creating a connected, coordinated, demand-responsive, and efficient public bus system that minimizes transit gaps for low-income, transit-dependent communities. To create equitable metropolitan public transportation, this paper evaluates existing CATS mobile applications that assist passengers in finding bus routes and arrival times. Our community survey methodology includes filling out questionnaires on Charlotte's current bus system on specific bus lines and determining user acceptance for a future novel smart technology. We have also collected data on the demand and transit gap for a real-world pilot study, Sprinter bus line, Bus line 7, Bus line 9, and Bus lines 97-99. These lines connect all of Charlotte City's main areas and are the most important bus lines in the system. On the studied routes, the primary survey results indicate that the current bus system has many flaws, the major one being the lack of proper timing to meet the needs of passengers. The most common problems are long commutes and long waiting times at stations. Moreover, the existing application provides inaccurate information, and on average, 80 percent of travelers and respondents are inclined to use new technology.Comment: 22 pages, 54 figure

A Novel Neural Network Approach for Predicting the Arrival Time of Buses for Smart On-Demand Public Transit

Among the major public transportation systems in cities, bus transit has its problems, including more accuracy and reliability when estimating the bus arrival time for riders. This can lead to delays and decreased ridership, especially in cities where public transportation is heavily relied upon. A common issue is that the arrival times of buses do not match the schedules, resulting in latency for fixed schedules. According to the study in this paper on New York City bus data, there is an average delay of around eight minutes or 491 seconds mismatch between the bus arrivals and the actual scheduled time. This research paper presents a novel AI-based data-driven approach for estimating the arrival times of buses at each transit point (station). Our approach is based on a fully connected neural network and can predict the arrival time collectively across all bus lines in large metropolitan areas. Our neural-net data-driven approach provides a new way to estimate the arrival time of the buses, which can lead to a more efficient and smarter way to bring the bus transit to the general public. Our evaluation of the network bus system with more than 200 bus lines, and 2 million data points, demonstrates less than 40 seconds of estimated error for arrival times. The inference time per each validation set data point is less than 0.006 ms

Visual evoked potentials (VEPS) are obtained from optic tract by recording the evoked potentials generated by retinal stimulation. The flash VEP (FVEP) is used less frequently than pattern reversal VEP (PRVEP) because; it shows great variation in both latency and amplitude. The present study was undertaken to evaluate the effect of change of wavelength of flash and change of check size on the parameters of visual evoked potential (amplitude and latency) in normal individuals and glaucoma patients. The group of healthy subjects in the age of 20-45 years while the group of glaucoma subjects where in the age of 25-50 years. The two groups were exposed to flash VEP with white light and blue color and they also were exposed to checks subtending a visual angles of 15, 30,60 and 120 minutes of arc. The measured data were statistically analyzed and summarized by histograms. The interindividual and intraindividual in latencies and amplitudes for FVEP were assessed using the coefficient of variation (COV). In conclusion, monochromatic flash VEP was preferred than white as there were minimal inter and intra individual variation of latencies and amplitudes. The most preferred check size in PRVEP was 120' for the two groups

This study aimed at analyzing Action Pack English textbooks' texts based on the availability of life skills for 5th, 6th and 7th grades and to determine the frequencies and percentages of the life skills present in each text. The sample of the study was English language textbooks for Action Pack series for the 5th, 6th, and 7th grades. The life skills which were analyzed are the following: Decision making, Problem solving, Creative thinking, Critical thinking, Effective communication, Interpersonal relationship skills, Self awareness, and Coping with emotions. The findings of the study indicated that life skills are distributed in randomly way among the three English Action Pack textbooks, there is no strategy for distribution life skills, and the highest percentage was 55.8% which was for effective communication life skill in the 6th grade English book. Then problem solving life skill also got a percentage of 44 % in the 7th grade. Then the effective communication life skill comes next with a percentage of 43.7% in the 5th grade. Rely on the results study recommended that, the need to develop appropriate criteria for the distribution of life skills in the classroom, which represents the study sample. Key Words: Action Pack, Life Skill

Predicting microRNAs as Anti-viral Agents in SARS-CoV-2 Infection Based on the Bioinformatics Approach: A Systematic Review

    Get PDF
Purpose: The beginning of 2020, the World health organization (WHO) declared severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) as responsible for the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) outbreak. Previous studies showed that microRNAs (miRNAs) are able to inhibit pathogenesis of DNA or RNA viruses by binding the genome. The purpose of the current study is an overview of the anti-viral role of cellular miRNAs against the COVID-19 infection. Methods: Our search was limited to all published original papers in the English language from 2019 to 2021 using several databases including PubMed, Google scholar, Scopus, and Science Direct. A manual search of references for included articled was also performed. Among 66 electronically searched citations, 17 papers met the inclusion criteria. Results: The presence of miRNAs during the COVID-19 infection, reported by several studies, predicts the possibility of using miRNAs as potential tools to eradicate the SARS-CoV-2 infection. In some studies, miRNAs have presented as a tool for targeting SARS-CoV-2 encoded genes which are essential in viral biogenesis, entrance, replication, and infection. Conclusion: The comparison of miRNA between SARS-CoV-2 with other human coronaviruses will help the better understanding of distinct clinical characteristics of them

Evaluation of the effect of vaccination on transmissibility and pathogenicity of Omicron variant and its comparison with other SARS-CoV-2 variants

The new variant of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has once again sounded the alarm on healthcare systems worldwide and has caused concern in some countries. This variant has been identified in South Africa and initially called B.1.1.529 and later renamed Omicron by the WHO. The transmissibility and immune evasion in the Omicron variant (B.1.1.529) is higher than the previous variants. Compared to the previous dominant variant, which was called the Delta variant, the Omicron variant has a very high transmission power but luckily, Omicron's symptoms are less serious. According to the WHO, the Omicron variant has the potential to re-infect people who already have other variants of SARS-CoV-2. Omicron contains at least 32 mutations in the spike protein also other proteins that are required for viral replication and it is twice the size of delta variant. Half of the mutations in this variant occur in the area of the virus through which they bind to the cells of the human body and cause infection. The Omicron variant likely developed in one person during chronic infection with an immune system deficiency (possibly untreated HIV/AIDS). It is possible that injecting a booster dose of existing vaccines and subsequently increasing antibody levels will provide adequate protection and an appropriate barrier against Omicron. The purpose of this article is to evaluate the Omicron variant and compare it with other SARS-CoV-2 variants and the effect of a booster dose in preventing disease progression
