    The Building sector commitment to promote the sustainability of construction products: a common European approach for the Environmental Product Performances

    The industry of construction products plays an important role in Europe in promoting the sustainability of the built environment in a life cycle perspective. Within the framework of the European initiatives for a sustainable competitiveness, manufacturers are interested in promoting a life cycle approach along the building chain. However both, institutions and building operators, in general still have to go a long way on designing and applying a sustainable and competitive industrial policy. This paper aims to describe the European background, the regulatory framework, identifying gaps and the actions to be undertaken to promote a market for sustainable products and sustainable buildings. In particular this paper deals with the assessment and communication of the environmental performance of construction products between the operators in the building chain, as a prerequisite for the sustainability of the built environment, and outlines the strategies to implement a proper evaluation and communication process

    Detection of Coxiella burnetii in complex matrices by using multiplex quantitative PCR during a major Q fever outbreak in the Netherlands

    Q fever, caused by Coxiella burnetii, is a zoonosis with a worldwide distribution. A large rural area in the southeast of the Netherlands was heavily affected by Q fever between 2007 and 2009. This initiated the development of a robust and internally controlled multiplex quantitative PCR (qPCR) assay for the detection of C. burnetii DNA in veterinary and environmental matrices on suspected Q fever-affected farms. The qPCR detects three C. burnetii targets (icd, com1, and IS1111) and one Bacillus thuringiensis internal control target (cry1b). Bacillus thuringiensis spores were added to samples to control both DNA extraction and PCR amplification. The performance of the qPCR assay was investigated and showed a high efficiency; a limit of detection of 13.0, 10.6, and 10.4 copies per reaction for the targets icd, com1, and IS1111, respectively; and no crossreactivity with the nontarget organisms tested. Screening for C. burnetii DNA on 29 suspected Q fever-affected farms during the Q fever epidemic in 2008 showed that swabs from dust-accumulating surfaces contained higher levels of C. burnetii DNA than vaginal swabs from goats or sheep. PCR inhibition by coextracted substances was observed in some environmental samples, and 10- or 100-fold dilutions of samples were sufficient to obtain interpretable signals for both the C. burnetii targets and the internal control. The inclusion of an internal control target and three C. burnetii targets in one multiplex qPCR assay showed that complex veterinary and environmental matrices can be screened reliably for the presence of C. burnetii DNA during an outbreak. © 2011, American Society for Microbiology

    Super-Resolution Mapping of a Chemical Reaction Driven by Plasmonic Near-Fields

    Plasmonic nanoparticles have recently emerged as promising photocatalysts for light-driven chemical conversions. Their illumination results in the generation of highly energetic charge carriers, elevated surface temperatures, and enhanced electromagnetic fields. Distinguishing between these often-overlapping processes is of paramount importance for the rational design of future plasmonic photocatalysts. However, the study of plasmon-driven chemical reactions is typically performed at the ensemble level and, therefore, is limited by the intrinsic heterogeneity of the catalysts. Here, we report an in situ single-particle study of a fluorogenic chemical reaction driven solely by plasmonic near-fields. Using super-resolution fluorescence microscopy, we map the position of individual product molecules with an ∼30 nm spatial resolution and demonstrate a clear correlation between the electric field distribution around individual nanoparticles and their super-resolved catalytic activity maps. Our results can be extended to systems with more complex electric field distributions, thereby guiding the design of future advanced photocatalysts

    This study starts with a description of the first years of Dutch broadcasting and focusses on the role religion played in this period. This role appears so important that the Dutch broadcasting system became prototypical for the Dutch 'verzuiling', 'pillarization'. In the second part of the article it is sketched how the impact of religion in the radio and television programs decreased in the 1960's and '70's, which led to a certain 'de-pillarization'. The last part of this paper shows how evangelical Chrisians reacted on this development and why they established a new religiously inspired station
