    Are Home Offices Feasible in a University?: Faculty Perceptions of a Home Office Experiment

    This article examines faculty perceptions of how the new technologies of E-mail and voice mail that were widely adopted as a result of the home office experiment changed the ways of working and ways of thinking about what is important. The authors discussed both first- and second-level effects of communication technologies in three areas: (1) on faculty interaction both within the department and in the larger campus community, (2) on student/faculty interaction, and (3) on work styles and the ways faculty members think about their work. When the home office project was envisioned, the goal was to use communication technology to create a work environment in which faculty without an office on campus could come to campus simply to teach classes and perhaps occasionally attend meetings, while performing most other duties off campus. The project seemed more palatable to most faculty in the department and to administrators because it was temporary, but it did require all faculty members to move twice within a three year period

    We report on the fabrication and characterization of vertical spin-valve structures using a thick epitaxial MgO barrier as spacer layer and a graphene-passivated Ni film as bottom ferromagnetic electrode. The devices show robust and scalable tunnel magnetoresistance, with several changes of sign upon varying the applied bias voltage. These findings are explained by a model of phonon-assisted transport mechanisms that relies on the peculiarity of the band structure and spin density of states at the hybrid graphene|Ni interface

    Ordering intermetallic alloys by ion irradiation: a way to tailor magnetic media

    Combining He ion irradiation and thermal mobility below 600K, we both trigger and control the transformation from chemical disorder to order in thin films of an intermetallic ferromagnet (FePd). Kinetic Monte Carlo simulations show how the initial directional short range order determines order propagation. Magnetic ordering perpendicular to the film plane was achieved, promoting the initially weak magnetic anisotropy to the highest values known for FePd films. This post-growth treatment should find applications in ultrahigh density magnetic recording.Comment: 7 pages, 3 Figure

    We identify a fundamental structure in the spectrum of microwave driven alkali Rydberg states, which highlights the remnants of the Coulomb symmetry in the presence of a non-hydrogenic core.     Sigma1 Targeting to Suppress Aberrant Androgen Receptor Signaling in Prostate Cancer.

    Suppression of androgen receptor (AR) activity in prostate cancer by androgen depletion or direct AR antagonist treatment, although initially effective, leads to incurable castration-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC) via compensatory mechanisms including resurgence of AR and AR splice variant (ARV) signaling. Emerging evidence suggests that Sigma1 (also known as sigma-1 receptor) is a unique chaperone or scaffolding protein that contributes to cellular protein homeostasis. We reported previously that some Sigma1-selective small molecules can be used to pharmacologically modulate protein homeostasis pathways. We hypothesized that these Sigma1-mediated responses could be exploited to suppress AR protein levels and activity. Here we demonstrate that treatment with a small-molecule Sigma1 inhibitor prevented 5α- dihydrotestosterone-mediated nuclear translocation of AR and induced proteasomal degradation of AR and ARV, suppressing the transcriptional activity and protein levels of both full-length and splice-variant AR.     Nanostructured rigid polyurethane foams with improved specific thermo-mechanical properties using Bacterial Nanocellulose as a Hard Segment

    Bacterial nanocellulose (BNC) was used to synthesize rigid polyurethane foams (RPUFs) based on its reaction with the isocyanate precursor (ISO route) and also by using the conventional procedure (POL route). The results indicated that at only 0.1 wt. % of BNC, drastic improvements of specific elastic compressive modulus (+244.2 %) and strength (+77.5 %) were found. The reaction of BNC with the precursor was corroborated through the measurement of isocyanate number and the BNC caused a significant nucleation effect, decreasing the cell size up to 39.7%. DSC analysis revealed that the BNC had a strong effect on post-cure enthalpy, decreasing its value when the ISO route was implemented. DMA analysis revealed that the RPUFs developed using the ISO route proved to have an improved damping factor, regardless of BNC concentration. These results emphasize the importance of using the ISO route to achieve foamed nanocomposites with improved specific mechanical properties

    The microbiome is extremely important for human health; more recently its role in the context of cancer became clear. Microbial effects range from enhancing cancer immunity and cancer therapy efficacy, to promoting cancer progression and inhibiting treatment efficacy. These broad implications led researchers to investigate these specific interactions, as well as how modification of the microbiome can improve cancer survival and treatment efficacy. While these interactions are better established for cancers such as gastric cancer, they are far less understood in others. As non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) makes up the majority of lung cancer cases, and is among the top causes of cancer deaths worldwide, understanding the mechanisms by which the microbiome may impact progression and treatment is crucial to improve patient survival and treatment response.     The role of microtransactions in Internet Gaming Disorder and Gambling Disorder: a preregistered systematic review

    Recently there has been increased interest in understanding the relationship between microtransactions, gaming, and gambling. This review aimed to synthesise the evidence on the relationship between microtransactions, ‘Internet Gaming Disorder’ (IGD), and Gambling Disorder in order to report on the: psychometric assessments used, sampling and demographic information, study design and sampling methods, relationships between microtransactions and both IGD and gambling disorder. Inclusion criteria included: refereed studies quantifying microtransactions and/or loot boxes examining their relationship with IGD and/or gambling disorder that were published between 2013 and 2021. Electronic databases were searched and the results were synthesised qualitatively. 14 studies were included. The quality of the evidence was ‘Good’ and clear positive relationships between microtransactions and both IGD and gambling disorder were identified. These relationships apply more to loot boxes than other microtransactions, and risky loot box use was identified as a possible mediator of these relationships. Additionally, microtransaction expenditure increased with the risk of gambling disorder. There is some evidence that adolescents who purchase loot boxes may be more at risk of developing gambling disorder. External validity is limited due to the cross-sectional nature of the evidence, the use of convenience sampling, and the predominantly Western samples resulting in non-representative samples. Prevalence rates of IGD and gambling disorder varied significantly across studies and were different to general prevalence rates. We conclude that there is a need to develop consistent methods for assessing IGD and microtransaction engagement in future research. Implications for policy-makers and future research are discussed

    R-matrix theory of driven electromagnetic cavities

    Resonances of cylindrical symmetric microwave cavities are analyzed in R-matrix theory which transforms the input channel conditions to the output channels. Single and interfering double resonances are studied and compared with experimental results, obtained with superconducting microwave cavities. Because of the equivalence of the two-dimensional Helmholtz and the stationary Schroedinger equations, the results present insight into the resonance structure of regular and chaotic quantum billiards.Comment: Revtex 4.

    Characteristics of starch-based films with different amylose contents plasticised by 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate

    Starch-based films plasticised by an ionic liquid, 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate ([Emim][OAc]), were prepared by a simple compression moulding process, facilitated by the strong plasticisation effect of [Emim][OAc]. The effects of amylose content of starch (regular vs. high-amylose maize) and relative humidity (RH) during ageing of the samples on a range of structural and material characteristics were investigated. Surprisingly, plasticisation by [Emim][OAc] made the effect of amylose content insignificant, contrary to most previous studies when other plasticisers were used. In other words, [Emim][OAc] changed the underlying mechanism responsible for mechanical properties from the entanglement of starch macromolecules (mainly amylose), which has been reported as a main responsible factor previously. The crystallinity of the plasticised starch samples was low and thus was unlikely to have a major contribution to the material characteristics, although the amylose content impacted on the crystalline structure and the mobility of amorphous parts in the samples to some extent. Therefore, RH conditioning and thus the sample water content was the major factor influencing the mechanical properties, glass transition temperature, and electrical conductivity of the starch films. This suggests the potential application of ionic liquid-plasticised starch materials in areas where the control of properties by environmental RH is desired
