    Cage\u27s Dungeon

Cage’s Dungeon specifically refers to the work of the influential composer, performer, writer, and philosopher, John Cage. More precisely, his later compositional style which emphasized the use of chance operations within a musical composition. Cage was highly influenced by eastern philosophy, Zen Buddhism in particular, and he was fascinated by the chance operations found in the ancient I Ching text. As a result, Cage wrote many works that were nothing more than a set of simple guidelines for the performer to follow, with the outcome of the process creating the piece. These indeterminate compositions are not so much about the technical prowess of the performer or composer, or even about making a profound artistic statement. Instead, Cage’s chance music creates an opportunity for unique and interesting sounds to interact with one another in a unique way

This study focused on how college students are using social media in the #Blacklivesmatter movement. There have been several socially galvanizing events surrounding the #Blacklivesmatter movement that have led to many people to turn to social media to voice their opinions, share information and debate different ideas. This study specifically focused on college student’s involvement on social media surrounding these events. The data suggests that Facebook was overwhelmingly the main choice for participants to gather information about this movement. While college students are gathering information about the #Blacklivesmatter movement on social media, the data suggests that participants rarely posted or shared information about the movement on their personal social media platforms. The study addressed how the Uses and Gratifications theory helps explain why people may or may not use social media for the purpose of news/information gathering

Relationships between Motor Competence, Physical Activity, and Obesity in British Preschool Aged Children

    Get PDF
Background: This cross-sectional study aimed to examine associations between motor competence, physical activity, and obesity in British children aged three to five years. Method: Motor competence (MC) was assessed using the Test of Gross Motor Development-2. Physical activity (PA) was assessed using triaxial wrist-worn accelerometers. Children were assessed on compliance to current PA recommendations of ≥180 min of total PA (TPA) and ≥60 min of moderate-to-vigorous PA (MVPA) for health benefits. Associations were explored with Pearson’s product moments and weight-status, and sex-differences were explored with independent t-tests and chi-squared analysis. Results: A total of 166 children (55% males; 4.28 ± 0.74 years) completed MC and PA assessments. Associations were found between PA and MC (TPA and overall MC, TPA and object-control MC (OC), MVPA and overall MC, and MVPA and OC). This study suggests that good motor competence is an important correlate of children meeting physical activity guidelines for health

'Civil Monsters': The Enlightened Dialectics of Othello

Shakespeare's Othello, a play written on the cusp of the modern era, is manifestly concerned with the destructive consequences of racial intolerance. This thematic parallel could provide grounds for a reading of the play informed by Horkheimer and Adorno’s Dialectic of Enlightenment. However, if one attends to the concerns about hypostatization and its relationship to instrumental reason tacit in the play, a more nuanced reading, which takes into account not only what the Dialectic can tell us about the play, but also how the play presages the Dialectic, is possible; it is this reading that I will here undertake and that will hopefully allow us to penetrate the reasons behind the intolerance to that which does not fit into pre-conceived categories, of which Othello and Desdemona—not to mention the exiled Horkheimer and Adorno—were victims

Men's Lived Experience of Mental Health during COVID-19: Research Report to Australian Men's Health Forum

    Get PDF
A mixed-methods study of men in Australia explored their lived experience of mental health during COVID-19 from 2020 to 2021. An online survey and semi-structured interviews found that social determinants of health such as the nature of employment, financial stability, quality of relationships, mental illness diagnoses and access to support services had varying impacts on reported levels of psychological distress. Isolation, slowing down, help-seeking and cumulative stress were identified as major themes, and men employed a range of coping strategies that were both helpful and harmful to their ongoing mental wellbeing. The study has implications for (1) understanding men’s lived experience, (2) challenging previously uncontested stereotypes about male attitudes and behaviours, (3) developing male-friendly support services, and (4) contributing to mental health policies in the event of future pandemic situations. The study was commissioned by the National Mental Health Commission and funded by Australian Men’s Health Forum and Western Sydney University
