Rotating Resonator-Oscillator Experiments to Test Lorentz Invariance in Electrodynamics
In this work we outline the two most commonly used test theories (RMS and
SME) for testing Local Lorentz Invariance (LLI) of the photon. Then we develop
the general framework of applying these test theories to resonator experiments
with an emphasis on rotating experiments in the laboratory. We compare the
inherent sensitivity factors of common experiments and propose some new
configurations. Finally we apply the test theories to the rotating cryogenic
experiment at the University of Western Australia, which recently set new
limits in both the RMS and SME frameworks [hep-ph/0506074].Comment: Submitted to Lecture Notes in Physics, 36 pages, minor modifications,

Monotonicity of quantum ground state energies: Bosonic atoms and stars
The N-dependence of the non-relativistic bosonic ground state energy is
studied for quantum N-body systems with either Coulomb or Newton interactions.
The Coulomb systems are "bosonic atoms," with their nucleus fixed, and the
Newton systems are "bosonic stars". In either case there exists some third
order polynomial in N such that the ratio of the ground state energy to the
respective polynomial grows monotonically in N. Some applications of these new
monotonicity results are discussed
Fermi Surface Measurements on the Low Carrier Density Ferromagnet Ca1-xLaxB6 and SrB6
Recently it has been discovered that weak ferromagnetism of a dilute 3D
electron gas develops on the energy scale of the Fermi temperature in some of
the hexaborides; that is, the Curie temperature approximately equals the Fermi
temperature. We report the results of de Haas-van Alphen experiments on two
concentrations of La-doped CaB6 as well as Ca-deficient Ca1-dB6 and
Sr-deficient Sr1-dB6. The results show that a Fermi surface exists in each case
and that there are significant electron-electron interactions in the low
density electron gas.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures, submitted to PR
Improved lower bounds for the ground-state energy of many-body systems
New lower bounds for the binding energy of a quantum-mechanical system of
interacting particles are presented. The new bounds are expressed in terms of
two-particle quantities and improve the conventional bounds of the Hall-Post
type. They are constructed by considering not only the energy in the
two-particle system, but also the structure of the pair wave function. We apply
the formal results to various numerical examples, and show that in some cases
dramatic improvement over the existing bounds is reached.Comment: 29 pages, 5 figures, to be published in Phys. Rev.
Determination of two-photon exchange amplitudes from elastic electron-proton scattering data
Using the available cross section and polarization data for elastic
electron-proton scattering, we provide an extraction of the two-photon exchange
amplitudes at a common value of four-momentum transfer, around Q^2 = 2.5 GeV^2.
This analysis also predicts the e^+ p / e^- p elastic scattering cross section
ratio, which will be measured by forthcoming experiments.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures, updated error analysi
Information capacity of quantum observable
In this paper we consider the classical capacities of quantum-classical
channels corresponding to measurement of observables. Special attention is paid
to the case of continuous observables. We give the formulas for unassisted and
entanglement-assisted classical capacities and consider some
explicitly solvable cases which give simple examples of entanglement-breaking
channels with We also elaborate on the ensemble-observable duality
to show that for the measurement channel is related to the
-quantity for the dual ensemble in the same way as is related to the
accessible information. This provides both accessible information and the
-quantity for the quantum ensembles dual to our examples.Comment: 13 pages. New section and references are added concerning the
ensemble-observable dualit
On Yukawa quasi-unification with mu<0
Although recent data on the muon anomalous magnetic moment strongly disfavor
the constrained minimal supersymmetric standard model with mu<0, they cannot
exclude it because of theoretical ambiguities. We consider this model
supplemented by a Yukawa quasi-unification condition which allows an acceptable
b-quark mass. We find that the cosmological upper bound on the lightest
sparticle relic abundance is incompatible with the data on the branching ratio
of b-->s gamma, which is evaluated by including all the next-to-leading order
corrections. Thus, this scheme is not viable.Comment: 4 pages including 3 figures, Revte
Constraints on the SU(3) Electroweak Model
We consider a recent proposal by Dimopoulos and Kaplan to embed the
electroweak SU(2)_L X U(1)_Y into a larger group SU(3)_W X SU(2) X U(1) at a
scale above a TeV. This idea is motivated by the prediction for the weak mixing
angle sin^2 theta_W = 1/4, which naturally appears in these models so long as
the gauge couplings of the high energy SU(2) and U(1) groups are moderately
large. The extended gauge dynamics results in new effective operators that
contribute to four-fermion interactions and Z pole observables. We calculate
the corrections to these electroweak precision observables and carry out a
global fit of the new physics to the data. For SU(2) and U(1) gauge couplings
larger than 1, we find that the 95% C.L. lower bound on the matching (heavy
gauge boson mass) scale is 11 TeV. We comment on the fine-tuning of the high
energy gauge couplings needed to allow matching scales above our bounds. The
remnants of SU(3)_W breaking include multi-TeV SU(2)_L doublets with electric
charge (+-2,+-1). The lightest charged gauge boson is stable, leading to
cosmological difficulties.Comment: 17 pages, LaTeX, 4 figures embedded, uses JHEP.cl
Charge dynamics and "ferromagnetism" of A1-xLaxB6 (A=Ca and Sr)
Ferromagnetism has been reported recently in La-doped alkaline-earth
hexaborides, A1-xLaxB6 (A=Ca, Sr, and Ba). We have performed the reflectivity,
Hall resistivity, and magnetization measurements of A1-xLaxB6. The results
indicate that A1-xLaxB6 can be regarded as a simple doped semimetal, with no
signature of an excitonic state as suggested by several theories. It is also
found that the surface of as-grown samples (10 micrometer in thickness) has a
different electronic structure from a bulk one, and a fairly large number of
paramagnetic moments are confined in this region. After eliminating these
paramagnetic moments at the surface, we could not find any evidence of an
intrinsic ferromagnetic moment in our samples, implying the possibility that
the ferromagnetism of A1-xLaxB6 reported so far is neither intrinsic.Comment: 7 pages, 8 figure
BEW: Bioinformatics workbench for analysis of biofilms experimental data
Biofilms research has evolved considerably in the last decade and is now generating large volumes of heterogeneous data. MIABiE, the international initiative on Biofilms, is devising guidelines for data interchange, and some databases provide access to biofilms experiments. However, the field is lacking appropriate bioinformatics tools in support of increasing operational and analytical needs. This paper presents a flexible and extensible open-source workbench for the operation and analysis of biofilms experiments, as follows: (i) the creation of customised experiments, (ii) the collection of various analytical results, following community standardisation guidelines and (iii) on-demand reporting and statistical evaluation
