Caught in the Act: Visualizing a Crime-Free Capital

A survey of Weimar cinema calls to mind several films that demonstrate a concern with weakened leadership and severed communal ties through the representation of public efforts to apprehend the deviant individual in the shadows of the city. This essay looks behind the scenes at the conditions under which the creators of these films crafted their tales of urban crime and detection, addressing a significant interplay between aesthetic production and actual criminal justice initiatives. Alongside and along with police education and legitimation projects, Weimar visual cultures criminal and legal narratives took part in a larger exploration of the status of the modern urban subject as participant in and product of culture and the law.A survey of Weimar cinema calls to mind several films that demonstrate a concern with weakened leadership and severed communal ties through the representation of public efforts to apprehend the deviant individual in the shadows of the city. Finding a Wells Way: Using Sustainability Metrics to Determine Best Practices for Relocating Wells Barns

    Get PDF
Serving as a visual representation of a different time and place, barns and agricultural architecture across America have both historical and cultural values that are imitable. Evoking a strong sense of nostalgia and simplicity, barns are an often-overlooked architectural typology worth preserving. Native to Western New York, historical Wells style barns have served as an iconic agricultural symbol since the late 1800s. As the means and methods of agriculture change with technological development, more and more of these exemplary structures are becoming neglected and obsolete. Typically located in remote, rural areas, this thesis looks to determine alternate, sustainable options in preserving these historic structures. More specifically, this thesis will explore the social, economic, and environmental impact associated with both rehabilitating a Wells Barn in situ, as well as via relocation. This assessment will serve as a resource and guide for future Wells Barn relocation projects to minimize any social, economic, and environmental impacts associated with relocating a historic structure

The Interpretation and Value of the Six Analytical Traits of Writing by Sixth Grade Students

This research study\u27s purpose is to interpret and describe the extent in which children define, and value the Six Analytical Traits of Writing within their own work. Data was collected through several sources; observational notes, pre and post surveys, writing group activities and self scored pieces of writing. The research question guiding this study was do children understand and what do they find valuable in relation to the Six Analytical Traits of Writing. Sixth grade students who participated in the study completed assignments over a nine week study and were observed in several different situations. The data analyzed found children were able to define each trait by the end of the study; mainly in generalities. Only a few children demonstrated the ability to internalize the traits and use them in discussing their work. The majority of the children were unable to communication how the traits were applied in their writing effectively. They also were unable to convey specifically how they evaluated their writing. This was supported by the data from the surveys. Hence, the traits were not internalized for many students

System Change Agents: A Profile of Policy-Focused Grantmaking Foundation Engagement in Public Policy

This study profiles the engagement of policy-focused Canadian grantmaking foundations in public policy. Policy-focused foundations now realize that downstream community issues are not isolated from upstream policy and regulatory practices. Foundation policy engagement has been measured across five policy streams: research and issue identification; policy entrepreneurship and convening; advocacy; implementation; and evaluation and impact. Themes emerging from this research include: 1) a migration from program into policy engagement; 2) the utilization of multiple soft and hard policy tools; 3) simultaneous engagement across multiple policy streams; 4) engagement with both systems and agents; 5) engagement in policy implementation; and 6) a long-term commitment to a focused policy issue. This research opens the door to a rich analysis of public policy engagement by grantmaking foundations.

Determinants Of Innovative Capability Of A Country And Its Role In Economic Growth

    Get PDF
This paper discusses the role that innovation plays in global competition and provides examples showing how firms from selected emerging markets use innovation to compete with global firms from the developed world. This paper also discusses the role of innovative capability in growth of a country by suggesting that in the long-term, a nation’s higher order competitive advantage can only be built with the innovative capability of its firms. In this context, an empirical model was used to identify the determinants of innovative capability of a country. The discussion of these determinants should be useful to policymakers in countries attempting to promote economic growth by improving the productivity of firms in their respective countries

    Linear preservers of row-dense matrices

summary:Let Mm,n\mathbf {M}_{m,n} be the set of all m×nm\times n real matrices. A matrix AMm,nA\in \mathbf {M}_{m,n} is said to be row-dense if there are no zeros between two nonzero entries for every row of this matrix. We find the structure of linear functions T ⁣:Mm,nMm,nT\colon \mathbf {M}_{m,n} \rightarrow \mathbf {M}_{m,n} that preserve or strongly preserve row-dense matrices, i.e., T(A)T(A) is row-dense whenever AA is row-dense or T(A)T(A) is row-dense if and only if AA is row-dense, respectively. Similarly, a matrix AMn,mA\in \mathbf {M}_{n,m} is called a column-dense matrix if every column of AA is a column-dense vector. At the end, the structure of linear preservers (strong linear preservers) of column-dense matrices is found
