Reproductive Individualism And Divorce: An Examination Of Attitudes And Marriage Dissolution In Canada
In documenting the dramatic increase in divorce in recent decades, several observers have uncovered strong empirical associations between religiosity and marriage dissolution. As well, many studies show a substantial relationship between premarital cohabitation and the risk of divorce.;What is it about religiosity and cohabitation that explains these statistical links to divorce? The main objective of this inquiry was to answer this question by placing marriage dissolution within a sociological framework. Building on concepts and ideas developed in the sociological theory of Anthony Giddens, it was argued that the recent proliferation of expert systems of knowledge and technology in the area of human reproduction has rapidly altered the social context and motivations for childbearing and childrearing.;Specifically, the thesis developed the idea that reproductive individualism has emerged as an important motivational and normative basis of marriage and family formation in modern society. Moreover, the theory developed in the study identifies reproductive individualism as a variable that might account for the documented associations among religiosity, cohabitation and divorce.;Using data from the 1984 Canadian Fertility Survey, a single factor analytic scale measuring reproductive individualism was constructed. A series of hazard models of divorce were subsequently developed to investigate the issues raised by the thesis. The results of the inquiry show that reproductive individualism is a major predictor of the risk of marriage dissolution. Additionally, reproductive individualism entirely explains the relationship between premarital cohabitation and divorce. Finally, reproductive individualist attitudes account for much of the statistical relationship between religiosity and divorce.;The general conclusion of the inquiry is that theoretically-grounded concepts such as reproductive individualism are essential to understanding contemporary trends in social demography. However, the sociological relevance of reproductive individualism may extend well beyond recent changes in marriage and the family. Indeed, the theory developed in the thesis implies that reproductive individualism has great potential to legitimize the commodification of human life by new reproductive technologies
Sea anemones may thrive in a high CO2 world
Increased seawater pCO 2, and in turn 'ocean acidification' (OA), is predicted to profoundly impact marine ecosystem diversity and function this century. Much research has already focussed on calcifying reef-forming corals (Class: Anthozoa) that appear particularly susceptible to OA via reduced net calcification. However, here we show that OA-like conditions can simultaneously enhance the ecological success of non-calcifying anthozoans, which not only play key ecological and biogeochemical roles in present day benthic ecosystems but also represent a model organism should calcifying anthozoans exist as less calcified (soft-bodied) forms in future oceans. Increased growth (abundance and size) of the sea anemone (Anemonia viridis) population was observed along a natural CO 2 gradient at Vulcano, Italy. Both gross photosynthesis (P G) and respiration (R) increased with pCO 2 indicating that the increased growth was, at least in part, fuelled by bottom up (CO 2 stimulation) of metabolism. The increase of P G outweighed that of R and the genetic identity of the symbiotic microalgae (Symbiodinium spp.) remained unchanged (type A19) suggesting proximity to the vent site relieved CO 2 limitation of the anemones' symbiotic microalgal population. Our observations of enhanced productivity with pCO 2, which are consistent with previous reports for some calcifying corals, convey an increase in fitness that may enable non-calcifying anthozoans to thrive in future environments, i.e. higher seawater pCO 2. Understanding how CO 2-enhanced productivity of non- (and less-) calcifying anthozoans applies more widely to tropical ecosystems is a priority where such organisms can dominate benthic ecosystems, in particular following localized anthropogenic stress. Restricted feedback control of one-dimensional maps
Dynamical control of biological systems is often restricted by the practical
constraint of unidirectional parameter perturbations. We show that such a
restriction introduces surprising complexity to the stability of
one-dimensional map systems and can actually improve controllability. We
present experimental cardiac control results that support these analyses.
Finally, we develop new control algorithms that exploit the structure of the
restricted-control stability zones to automatically adapt the control feedback
parameter and thereby achieve improved robustness to noise and drifting system

Tofacitinib versus methotrexate in rheumatoid arthritis
Background : Methotrexate is the most frequently used first-line antirheumatic drug. We report the findings of a phase 3 study of monotherapy with tofacitinib, an oral Janus kinase inhibitor, as compared with methotrexate monotherapy in patients with rheumatoid arthritis who had not previously received methotrexate or therapeutic doses of methotrexate.
Methods : We randomly assigned 958 patients to receive 5 mg or 10 mg of tofacitinib twice daily or methotrexate at a dose that was incrementally increased to 20 mg per week over 8 weeks; 956 patients received a study drug. The coprimary end points at month 6 were the mean change from baseline in the van der Heijde modified total Sharp score (which ranges from 0 to 448, with higher scores indicating greater structural joint damage) and the proportion of patients with an American College of Rheumatology (ACR) 70 response (>= 70% reduction in the number of both tender and swollen joints and >= 70% improvement in three of five other criteria: the patient's assessment of pain, level of disability, C-reactive protein level or erythrocyte sedimentation rate, global assessment of disease by the patient, and global assessment of disease by the physician).
Results : Mean changes in the modified total Sharp score from baseline to month 6 were significantly smaller in the tofacitinib groups than in the methotrexate group, but changes were modest in all three groups (0.2 points in the 5-mg tofacitinib group and <0.1 point in the 10-mg tofacitinib group, as compared with 0.8 points in the methotrexate group [ P<0.001 for both comparisons]). Among the patients receiving tofacitinib, 25.5% in the 5-mg group and 37.7% in the 10-mg group had an ACR 70 response at month 6, as compared with 12.0% of patients in the methotrexate group (P<0.001 for both comparisons). Herpes zoster developed in 31 of 770 patients who received tofacitinib (4.0%) and in 2 of 186 patients who received methotrexate (1.1%). Confirmed cases of cancer (including three cases of lymphoma) developed in 5 patients who received tofacitinib and in 1 patient who received methotrexate. Tofacitinib was associated with increases in creatinine levels and in low-density and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels.
Conclusions : In patients who had not previously received methotrexate or therapeutic doses of methotrexate, tofacitinib monotherapy was superior to methotrexate in reducing signs and symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis and inhibiting the progression of structural joint damage. The benefits of tofacitinib need to be considered in the context of the risks of adverse events
A Complete Model of Low-Scale Gauge Mediation
Recent signs of a Standard Model-like Higgs at 125 GeV point towards large
A-terms in the MSSM. This presents special challenges for gauge mediation,
which by itself predicts vanishing A-terms at the messenger scale. In this
paper, we review the general problems that arise when extending gauge mediation
to achieve large A-terms, and the mechanisms that exist to overcome them. Using
these mechanisms, we construct weakly-coupled models of low-scale gauge
mediation with extended Higgs-messenger couplings that generate large A-terms
at the messenger scale and viable mu/B_mu-terms. Our models are simple,

Glastir Monitoring & Evaluation Programme. First year annual report
The Welsh Government has commissioned a comprehensive new ecosystem monitoring and evaluation programme to monitor the effects of Glastir, its new land management scheme, and to monitor progress towards a range of international biodiversity and environmental targets. A random sample of 1 km squares stratified by landcover types will be used both to monitor change at a national level in the wider countryside and to provide a backdrop against which intervention measures are assessed using a second sample of 1 km squares located in areas eligible for enhanced payments for advanced interventions. Modelling in the first year has forecast change based on current understanding, whilst a rolling national monitoring programme based on an ecosystem approach will provide an evidence-base for on-going, adaptive development of the scheme by Welsh Government. To our knowledge, this will constitute the largest and most in-depth ecosystem monitoring and evaluation programme of any member state of the European Union
