Undernutrition is a senous global problem especially among developing countries. Undernutrition is still common among poor rural children in Malaysia. The School Supplementary Feeding Programme (SSFP) is one of the intervention strategies implemented to improve the nutritional status of children in Malaysia. The objectives of the study are to determine the prevalence of malnutrition, associated factors of underweight, stunting and wasting and to evaluate the effect of School Supplementary Feeding Programme on improving nutritional status among pnmary one children in rural areas of Tum pat and Bachok districts. The study has 2 phases. Phase 1 is a crosssectional study and the Phase 2 is a cohort study. The study was done among primary one children in rural areas of Tumpat and Bachok districts from February 2002 to March 2003. Nine hundred and thirty seven children from 18 primary schools were selected. Questionnaires eliciting socio-economic and demographic informations were answered by the parents. The weight and height of the children were measured three times; before starting SSFP, after 6 months and after 12 months of SSFP. The WAZ, HAZ and WI-IZ were calculated using Epi-Nut Antlll'opometry software (Epi Info version 6). The prevalence of malnutrition were calculated based on cutoff point of zscore +2 SD as overnutrition. The school administration chose eligible children to participate in the SSFP. five hundred and forty one children were enrolled in SSFP and 396 were in non-SSFP group. The prevalence of underweight~ stunting and wasting at baseline were 25 .2%, 21.1% and 6.2% respectively. Only 1.1% of children were overweight. In multiple logistic regression analysis, the significant risk factors of underweight were being male children (OR=l.4, P<O.OS), Tumpat district (OR=l .5, p<0.05) and monthly family income of R.J\1 0-250 (OR=2.2, p<0.05) and RM 251-500 (OR=2.3, p<0.05). Being a male children (OR=l.6, p<0.05) was the only significant factor for stunting and working mother (OR=2.1, p<O.OS) was the only significant factor of wasting. Repeated measures ANOV A showed there was significant different of increment of WHZ (p = 0.007) between SSFP and non SSFP group with regard to time and adjusted for gender, district, family income group and baseline nutritional status. However, no significant different of W AZ (p=O .l26) and HAZ (p=0.266) with regard to time and group was found . In conclusion, there is still a high prevalence of undernutrition among children in rural areas of Tum pat and Bachok. The condition was associated with low socio-economic and demographic status of the population. The SSFP has significantly improved the nutritional status of children with wasting. Also, the increment of W AZ, HAZ and WHZ was better among undernourished children compared to normal children

    Get PDF
Introduction Emergency work with regular exposure to traumatic events may cause a large burden of mental health consequences. Among the first responders, firefighters are generally said to have a larger risk for PTSD as they involve directly and indirectly with critical incidents and traumatic events as part of their duties. This systematic review will determine the prevalence of PTSD and identify factors which associated to the PTSD among firefighters. Methods Systematic search was performed for published articles from year 2007 till 2017 from five electronic literature databases and the PRISMA checklist was used for the workflow for article selection. A total of 12 articles were selected for final examination from a total of 188 articles screened. Results The prevalence of PTSD among firefighters are ranged from 6.4% to 57 %. Predictors are include demographic factor (age, educational level and marital status), job factors (years of service, rank, numbers of traumatic events, job stress, organization stress and burnout, occupational effort, internal locus control, resource availability, debriefing attendance), social support, post traumatic growth, comorbidity (anxiety, depression, work related injuries, chronic musculoskeletal disorder), coping style, resilience, personality, biological factor (adiponectin level) and physical factor (waist circumference, body mass index). Conclusions Various factors identified in different dimensions in order to promote the opportunities for firefighters to grow for a better outcome psychologically. Therefore, it is vital to recognize modifiable factors which are associated with PTSD and research need to focus more on these factors or predictors

Sustainable design elements for urban street micro-architecture in Malaysia

    Get PDF
Streets microarchitecture constructs are compact structures such as stalls, kiosks, phone booths, and toilets that one finds as one walks on the streets, alleys, walkways, pedestrian malls and such. Because of its smallness, they are usually seen to be unimportant in the development of townships and cities. In this paper a series of street investigation of human behavior within the retail built environment projected a unique results on how formal and informal street space is cultured. As Jacob (1993) stated a great street should have characters, therefore this event can bond a specific street identity within and would become a tourism product besides the daily retail activity. Microarchitecture, however, actually gives the first real impression of a town, city or country to visitors to a particular place or locale. Its impact is immediate and opinions are formed of the place and its people quite instantaneously. A lot of street micro-architecture are public amenities such as toilets and squares. Base on current phenomenology research studied, it gives a better justification on sustainable elements approach on street microahitecture in Malaysia. Thus, in this research and practise base paper, it is imperative to study and understand its functions, aesthetics and design elements so that a sustainable architectural plan and street identity can be developed for the comfort of locals and visitors alike

    Get PDF
Reducing cycle time has an impact in many aspects such as productivity and capacity of industry. This study investigates the effect of assembly design parameters such as workstation design, working posture: standing and sitting and jig design on plug assembly time. The parameters or factors involved were three jig designs; number of holders, working postures: standing and sitting to assembly time and gender. An experiment with a full factorial design with four factors of 2 and 3 levels was applied. Ten participants consisting of five males and fives females were asked to assemble the plugs. The study concluded that all main factors, and some interaction factors significantly contributed to assembly time. The lowest assembly time per plug for assembly setting was sitting posture by male operators , using rectangular jig with 3 holders per jig. Meanwhile the highest assembly time per plug was performed by the female operator using horizontal jig with 5 plugs holder per jig. The study also generates the regression model that describes the relationship of all factors involved. Validation of the model also was performed by taking some runs of experiments. The average deviation of actual data and predicted is less than five per cent

Abstract The traditional and modern stories have exuberantly depicted various forms of the Angels (MalÉ´ikah). Consequently, there are dichotomous views and opinions among writers, criticizers and scholars as regards the manifestation of Angels. Therefore, this study attempts to reveal the various aspects of axiomatic beliefs manifested on MalÉ´ikah in the legends, epics and the stories written in Arabic and renovation of their styles in the contemporary Arabic novels. The study also attempts to explore the real doctrines of holy Qur´Én and prophetic traditions regarding such beliefs so as to obtain the criteria by which the ideal personality of MalÉ´ikah must be depicted in the art of story writing
