Hippocampal Global Remapping Can Occur without Input from the Medial Entorhinal Cortex.
The high storage capacity of the episodic memory system relies on distinct representations for events that are separated in time and space. The spatial component of these computations includes the formation of independent maps by hippocampal place cells across environments, referred to as global remapping. Such remapping is thought to emerge by the switching of input patterns from specialized spatially selective cells in medial entorhinal cortex (mEC), such as grid and border cells. Although it has been shown that acute manipulations of mEC firing patterns are sufficient for inducing hippocampal remapping, it remains unknown whether specialized spatial mEC inputs are necessary for the reorganization of hippocampal spatial representations. Here, we examined remapping in rats without mEC input to the hippocampus and found that highly distinct spatial maps emerged rapidly in every individual rat. The medial entorhinal cortex is necessary for temporal organization of hippocampal neuronal activity.
The superficial layers of the medial entorhinal cortex (MEC) are a major input to the hippocampus. The high proportion of spatially modulated cells, including grid cells and border cells, in these layers suggests that MEC inputs are critical for the representation of space in the hippocampus. However, selective manipulations of the MEC do not completely abolish hippocampal spatial firing. To determine whether other hippocampal firing characteristics depend more critically on MEC inputs, we recorded from hippocampal CA1 cells in rats with MEC lesions. Theta phase precession was substantially disrupted, even during periods of stable spatial firing. Our findings indicate that MEC inputs to the hippocampus are required for the temporal organization of hippocampal firing patterns and suggest that cognitive functions that depend on precise neuronal sequences in the hippocampal theta cycle are particularly dependent on the MEC
Is there really a debris disc around ?
The presence of a debris disc around the Gyr-old solar-type star
was suggested by the infrared
excess detection. Follow-up observations with /PACS revealed
a double-lobed feature, that displayed asymmetries both in brightness and
position. Therefore, the disc was thought to be edge-on and significantly
eccentric. Here we present ALMA/ACA observations in Band 6 and 7 which
unambiguously reveal that these lobes show no common proper motion with
. In these observations, no flux has been detected
around that exceeds the levels. We
conclude that surface brightness upper limits of a debris disc around
are at 1.3 mm, and
at 870 microns. Our results overall demonstrate
the capability of the ALMA/ACA to follow-up observations of

The strong thirteen spheres problem
The thirteen spheres problem is asking if 13 equal size nonoverlapping
spheres in three dimensions can touch another sphere of the same size. This
problem was the subject of the famous discussion between Isaac Newton and David
Gregory in 1694. The problem was solved by Schutte and van der Waerden only in
1953.
A natural extension of this problem is the strong thirteen spheres problem
(or the Tammes problem for 13 points) which asks to find an arrangement and the
maximum radius of 13 equal size nonoverlapping spheres touching the unit
sphere. In the paper we give a solution of this long-standing open problem in
geometry. Our computer-assisted proof is based on a enumeration of the

Comparison Between Diffusion-Weighted MRI and I-123-mIBG Uptake in Primary High-Risk Neuroblastoma
Background: High-risk neuroblastoma (HR-NB) has a variable response to preoperative chemotherapy. It is not possible to
differentiate viable vs. nonviable residual tumor before surgery.
Purpose: To explore the association between apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) values from diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (DW-MRI), 123I-meta-iodobenzyl-guanidine (123I-mIBG) uptake, and histology before and after
chemotherapy.
Study Type: Retrospective.
Subjects: Forty patients with HR-NB.
Field Strength/Sequence: 1.5T axial DW-MRI (b = 0,1000 s/mm2
) and T2-weighted sequences. 123I-mIBG scintigraphy planar imaging (all patients), with additional 123I-mIBG single-photon emission computed tomography / computerized tomography (SPECT/CT) imaging (15 patients).
Assessment: ADC maps and 123I-mIBG SPECT/CT images were coregistered to the T2-weighted images. 123I-mIBG uptake
was normalized with a tumor-to-liver count ratio (TLCR). Regions of interest (ROIs) for primary tumor volume and different
intratumor subregions were drawn. The lower quartile ADC value (ADC25prc) was used over the entire tumor volume and
the overall level of 123I-mIBG uptake was graded into avidity groups.
Statistical Tests: Analysis of variance (ANOVA) and linear regression were used to compare ADC and MIBG values before
and after treatment. Threshold values to classify tumors as viable/necrotic were obtained using ROC analysis of ADC and
TLCR values.
Results: No significant difference in whole-tumor ADC25prc values were found between different 123I-mIBG avidity groups
pre- (P = 0.31) or postchemotherapy (P = 0.35). In the “intratumor” analysis, 5/15 patients (prechemotherapy) and 0/14
patients (postchemotherapy) showed a significant correlation between ADC and TLCR values (P < 0.05). Increased tumor
shrinkage was associated with lower pretreatment tumor ADC25prc values (P < 0.001); no association was found with pretreatment 123I-mIBG avidity (P = 0.17). Completely nonviable tumors had significantly lower postchemotherapy ADC25prc
values than tumors with >10% viable tumor (P < 0.05). Both pre- and posttreatment TLCR values were significantly higher
in patients with >50% viable tumor than those with 10–50% viable tumor (P < 0.05).
Data Conclusion: 123I-mIBG avidity and ADC values are complementary noninvasive biomarkers of therapeutic response in
HR-NB.

Relative effects on stratospheric ozone of halogenated methanes and ethanes of social and industrial interest
Four atmospheric modeling groups have calculated relative effects of several halocarbons (chlorofluorocarbons (CFC's)-11, 12, 113, 114, and 115; hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFC's) 22, 123, 124, 141b, and 142b; hydrofluorocarbons (HFC's) 125, 134a, 143a, and 152a, carbon tetrachloride; and methyl chloroform) on stratospheric ozone. Effects on stratospheric ozone were calculated for each compound and normalized relative to the effect of CFC-11. These models include the representations for homogeneous physical and chemical processes in the middle atmosphere but do no account for either heterogeneous chemistry or polar dynamics which are important in the spring time loss of ozone over Antarctica. Relative calculated effects using a range of models compare reasonably well. Within the limits of the uncertainties of these model results, compounds now under consideration as functional replacements for fully halogenated compounds have modeled stratospheric ozone reductions of 10 percent or less of that of CFC-11. Sensitivity analyses examined the sensitivity of relative calculated effects to levels of other trace gases, assumed transport in the models, and latitudinal and seasonal local dependencies. Relative effects on polar ozone are discussed in the context of evolving information on the special processes affecting ozone, especially during polar winter-springtime. Superlattice Magnetophonon Resonances in Strongly Coupled InAs/GaSb Superlattices
We report an experimental study of miniband magnetoconduction in
semiconducting InAs/GaSb superlattices. For samples with miniband widths below
the longitudinal optical phonon energy we identify a new superlattice
magnetophonon resonance (SLMPR) caused by resonant scattering of electrons
across the mini-Brillouin zone. This new resonant feature arises directly from
the drift velocity characteristics of the superlattice dispersion and total

Contact numbers for congruent sphere packings in Euclidean 3-space
Continuing the investigations of Harborth (1974) and the author (2002) we
study the following two rather basic problems on sphere packings. Recall that
the contact graph of an arbitrary finite packing of unit balls (i.e., of an
arbitrary finite family of non-overlapping unit balls) in Euclidean 3-space is
the (simple) graph whose vertices correspond to the packing elements and whose
two vertices are connected by an edge if the corresponding two packing elements
touch each other. One of the most basic questions on contact graphs is to find
the maximum number of edges that a contact graph of a packing of n unit balls
can have in Euclidean 3-space. Our method for finding lower and upper estimates
for the largest contact numbers is a combination of analytic and combinatorial
ideas and it is also based on some recent results on sphere packings. Finally,
we are interested also in the following more special version of the above
problem. Namely, let us imagine that we are given a lattice unit sphere packing
with the center points forming the lattice L in Euclidean 3-space (and with
certain pairs of unit balls touching each other) and then let us generate
packings of n unit balls such that each and every center of the n unit balls is
chosen from L. Just as in the general case we are interested in finding good
estimates for the largest contact number of the packings of n unit balls

Science with an ngVLA: Resolving the Radio Complexity of EXor and FUor-type Systems with the ngVLA
Episodic accretion may be a common occurrence in the evolution of young
pre-main sequence stars and has important implications for our understanding of
star and planet formation. Many fundamental aspects of what drives the
accretion physics, however, are still unknown. The ngVLA will be a key tool in
understanding the nature of these events. The high spatial resolution, broad
spectral coverage, and unprecedented sensitivity will allow for the detailed
analysis of outburst systems. The proposed frequency range of the ngVLA allows
for observations of the gas, dust, and non-thermal emission from the star and

HIV continuum of care in Europe and Central Asia.
OBJECTIVES: The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) supports countries to monitor progress in their response to the HIV epidemic. In line with these monitoring responsibilities, we assess how, and to what extent, the continuum of care is being measured across countries. METHODS: The ECDC sent out questionnaires to 55 countries in Europe and Central Asia in 2014. Nominated country representatives were questioned on how they defined and measured six elements of the continuum. We present our results using three previously described frameworks [breakpoints; Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) 90-90-90 targets; diagnosis and treatment quadrant]. RESULTS: Forty countries provided data for at least one element of the continuum. Countries reported most frequently on the number of people diagnosed with HIV infection (37; 93%), and on the number in receipt of antiretroviral therapy (ART) (35; 88%). There was little consensus across countries in their approach to defining linkage to, and retention in, care. The most common breakpoint (>19% reduction between two adjacent elements) related to the estimated number of people living with HIV who were diagnosed (18 of 23; 78%). CONCLUSIONS: We present continuum data from multiple countries that provide both a snapshot of care provision and a baseline against which changes over time in care provision across Europe and Central Asia may be measured. To better inform HIV testing and treatment programmes, standard data collection approaches and definitions across the HIV continuum of care are needed. If countries wish to ensure an unbroken HIV continuum of care, people living with HIV need to be diagnosed promptly, and ART needs to be offered to all those diagnosed
