VHBORE: A Code to Compute Borehole Fluid Conductivity Profiles With Pressure Changes in the Borehole
Explicit approximate controllability of the Schr\"odinger equation with a polarizability term
We consider a controlled Schr\"odinger equation with a dipolar and a
polarizability term, used when the dipolar approximation is not valid. The
control is the amplitude of the external electric field, it acts non linearly
on the state. We extend in this infinite dimensional framework previous
techniques used by Coron, Grigoriu, Lefter and Turinici for stabilization in
finite dimension. We consider a highly oscillating control and prove the
semi-global weak stabilization of the averaged system using a Lyapunov
function introduced by Nersesyan. Then it is proved that the solutions of the
Schr\"odinger equation and of the averaged equation stay close on every finite
time horizon provided that the control is oscillating enough. Combining these
two results, we get approximate controllability to the ground state for the
polarizability system
Scattering and Iron Fluorescence Revealed During Absorption Dips in Circinus X-1
We show that dramatic spectral evolution associated with dips occurring near
phase zero in RXTE observations of Cir X-1 is well-fit by variable and at times
heavy absorption (N_H > 10^24 cm^-2) of a bright component, plus an underlying
faint component which is not attenuated by the variable column and whose flux
is ~10% of that of the unabsorbed bright component. A prominent Fe emission
line at ~6.5 keV is evident during the dips. The absolute line flux outside the
dips is similar to that during the dips, indicating that the line is associated
with the faint component. These results are consistent with a model in which
the bright component is radiation received directly from a compact source while
the faint component may be attributed to scattered radiation. Our results are
also generally consistent with those of Brandt et al., who found that a
partial- covering model could explain ASCA spectra of a low-to-high transition
in Cir X-1. The relative brightness of the two components in our model requires
a column density of ~2*10^23 cm^-2 if the faint component is due to Thomson
scattering in material that mostly surrounds the source. We find that
illumination of such a scattering cloud by the observed direct component would
produce an Fe K-alpha fluorescence flux that is in rough agreement with the
flux of the observed emission line. We also conclude that if the scattering
medium is not highly ionized, our line of sight to the compact source does not
pass through it. Finally, we discuss simple pictures of the absorbers

Influence of shock wave propagation on dielectric barrier discharge plasma actuator performance
Interest in plasma actuators as active flow control devices is growing rapidly due to their lack of mechanical parts, light weight and high response frequency. Although the flow induced by these actuators has received much attention, the effect that the external flow has on the performance of the actuator itself must also be considered, especially the influence of unsteady high-speed flows which are fast becoming a norm in the operating flight envelopes. The primary objective of this study is to examine the characteristics of a dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma actuator when exposed to an unsteady flow generated by a shock tube. This type of flow, which is often used in different studies, contains a range of flow regimes from sudden pressure and density changes to relatively uniform high-speed flow regions. A small circular shock tube is employed along with the schlieren photography technique to visualize the flow. The voltage and current traces of the plasma actuator are monitored throughout, and using the well-established shock tube theory the change in the actuator characteristics are related to the physical processes which occur inside the shock tube. The results show that not only is the shear layer outside of the shock tube affected by the plasma but the passage of the shock front and high-speed flow behind it also greatly influences the properties of the plasma
Ground--state energies and widths of He and Li
We extract energies and widths of the ground states of He and Li from
recent single--level R--matrix fits to the spectra of the H)He and the He)Li reactions. The widths
obtained differ significantly from the formal R--matrix values but they are
close to those measured as full widths at half maxima of the spectra in various
experiments. The energies are somewhat lower than those given by usual
estimates of the peak positions. The extracted values are close to the
S--matrix poles calculated previously from the multi--term analyses of the

Search for the Radiative Capture d+d->^4He+\gamma Reaction from the dd\mu Muonic Molecule State
A search for the muon catalyzed fusion reaction dd --> ^4He +\gamma in the
dd\mu muonic molecule was performed using the experimental \mu CF installation
TRITON and NaI(Tl) detectors for \gamma-quanta. The high pressure target filled
with deuterium at temperatures from 85 K to 800 K was exposed to the negative
muon beam of the JINR phasotron to detect \gamma-quanta with energy 23.8 MeV.
The first experimental estimation for the yield of the radiative deuteron
capture from the dd\mu state J=1 was obtained at the level n_{\gamma}\leq

Near and mid-IR sub-arcsecond structure of the dusty symbiotic star R Aqr
The results of a high-resolution interferometric campaign targeting the
symbiotic long-period variable (LPV) R~Aqr are reported. With both
near-infrared measurements on baselines out to 10m and mid-infrared data
extending to 32m, we have been able to measure the characteristic sizes of
regions from the photosphere of the LPV and its extended molecular atmosphere,
out to the cooler circumstellar dust shell. The near-infrared data were taken
using aperture masking interferometry on the Keck-I telescope and show R~Aqr to
be partially resolved for wavelengths out to 2.2 microns but with a marked
enlargement, possibly due to molecular opacity, at 3.1 microns. Mid-infrared
interferometric measurements were obtained with the U.C. Berkeley Infrared
Spatial Interferometer (ISI) operating at 11.15 microns from 1992 to 1999.
Although this dataset is somewhat heterogeneous with incomplete coverage of the
Fourier plane and sampling of the pulsation cycle, clear changes in the
mid-infrared brightness distribution were observed, both as a function of
position angle on the sky and as a function of pulsation phase. Spherically
symmetric radiative transfer calculations of uniform-outflow dust shell models
produce brightness distributions and spectra which partially explain the data,
however limitations to this approximation are noted. Evidence for significant
deviation from circular symmetry was found in the mid-infrared and more
tentatively at 3.08 microns in the near-infrared, however no clear detection of
binarity or of non-LPV elements in the symbiotic system is reported.Comment: Accepted to Astrophysical Journal. To appear in volume 534. 14 pages;

Kinetics of photoinduced ordering in azo-dye films: two-state and diffusion models
We study the kinetics of photoinduced ordering in the azo-dye SD1
photoaligning layers and present the results of modeling performed using two
different phenomenological approaches. A phenomenological two state model is
deduced from the master equation for an ensemble of two-level molecular
systems. Using an alternative approach, we formulate the two-dimensional (2D)
diffusion model as the free energy Fokker-Planck equation simplified for the
limiting regime of purely in-plane reorientation. The models are employed to
interpret the irradiation time dependence of the absorption order parameters
extracted from the available experimental data by using the exact solution to
the light transmission problem for a biaxially anisotropic absorbing layer. The
transient photoinduced structures are found to be biaxially anisotropic whereas
the photosteady and the initial states are uniaxial.Comment: revtex4, 34 pages, 9 figure
Characteristics of a Delayed System with Time-dependent Delay Time
The characteristics of a time-delayed system with time-dependent delay time
is investigated. We demonstrate the nonlinearity characteristics of the
time-delayed system are significantly changed depending on the properties of
time-dependent delay time and especially that the reconstructed phase
trajectory of the system is not collapsed into simple manifold, differently
from the delayed system with fixed delay time. We discuss the possibility of a

The role of brand loyalty and social media in e-commerce interfaces: survey results and implications for user interfaces
This paper explores the role of brand loyalty and social media in e-commerce interfaces. A survey consisting of 118 respondents was contacted to address the questions relating to online shopping and brand loyalty. Link between the frequency of access and time spent on an e-commerce user interface, and brand loyalty, gender and age profile differences, and the role of social media to branding and on-line shopping was analyzed. It was found that online loyalty differs from offline loyalty and loyalty also differed across genders, showing men were more loyal than women when shopping online. Information shared about products on social media by friends and family played an important role in purchase decision making. Website interface and ease of navigation were also key aspects for online shopping. The research concluded with recommendations to create multimodal websites which are more interactive and targeted so customer experience is enhanced and loyalty is achieved through the use of interactivity and social media
