    Prevalence of Salmonella Typhi, Staphylococcus aureus and intestinal parasites among male food handlers in Laghouat Province, Algeria

    Background: Food-borne diseases are a global public health problem, most especially in developing countries. Food handlers with a low level of  personal hygiene may be colonized or infected by a wide range of enteric pathogenic micro-organisms including intestinal parasites and bacteria.  The aim of this study is to determine the prevalence of Salmonella Typhi, Staphylococcus aureus and intestinal parasites among male food handlers  in Laghouat province, southern Algeria. Methodology: In this cross-sectional study, stool samples and fingernail samples of both hands were collected from 155 randomly selected male  food handlers. Stool specimens were examined by direct wet mount, formalinether concentration, xenic invitro culture and staining methods for  parasitological identification. For bacterial isolation, standard culture media including Hektoen agar, Salmonella-Shigella (SS), Mannitol salt, and  Blood agar plates were used. Conventional biochemical tests were used for identification of S. Typhi and S. aureus. Antimicrobial susceptibility test  (AST) was performed for bacterial isolates by the Kirby-Bauer disk diffusion method. Data analysis was done using Minitab version 19 software, and  Pearson’s Chi-square test was used to determine association between categorical variables. P value < 0.05 was considered statistically significant.   Results: The overall prevalence rate of intestinal parasites among the study subjects was 40% (62/155). Blastocystis spp was the most frequent  parasite isolated (16.8%), followed by Giardia intestinalis (8.4%), Entamoeba histolytica/dispar (7.7%), Entamoeba coli (3.2%), Trichomonas intestinalis  (2.6%) and Endolimax nana (1.3%). Stool cultures revealed 4 (2.6%) positive samples for S. Typhi, and S. aureus was isolated from fingernail contents  of 23 (14.8%) subjects. All S. Typhi isolates were sensitive to imipenem and ciprofloxacin while S. aureus isolates show high sensitivity to  pristinamycin. Hand washing with soap, finger nail status and clinical manifestations were significantly associated with intestinal parasitic infections,  while clinical manifestation was the only factor associated with S. aureus infection. Conclusion: The present study indicates a high prevalence of pathogenic micro-organisms among male food handlers which highlight the important role of food handlers in the spread and transmission of foodborne infections, and thus requires more attention

    Slow plasmon modes in polymeric salt solutions

    The dynamics of polymeric salt solutions are presented. The salt consists of chains A\rm A and B\rm B, which are chemically different and interact with a Flory-interaction parameter χ\chi, the A\rm A chain ends carry a positive charge whereas the B\rm B chain ends are modified by negative charges. The static structure factor shows a peak corresponding to a micro phase separation. At low momentum transfer, the interdiffusion mode is driven by electrostatics and is of the plasmon-type, but with an unusually low frequency, easily accessible by experiments. This is due to the polymer connectivity that introduces high friction and amplifies the charge scattering thus allowing for low charge densities. The interdiffusion mode shows a minimum (critical slowing down) at finite kk when the interaction parameter increases we find then a low kk frequency quasi-plateau.Comment: accepted in Europhys. Let

    Risque dû à la consommation des boissons rafraichissantes sans alcool édulcorées

    L’objectif de la présente étude est d’estimer la qualité chimique et microbiologique des différents types de boissons rafraichissantes sans alcool (BRSA) commercialisées dans la région de Djelfa. Les résultats obtenus montrent que 36.66% des échantillons sont non conformes à la réglementation Algérienne. 23.33% sont relatives à la qualité chimique (dépassement des doses de la saccharine pour 20% des échantillons et présence d’un édulcorant non autorisé, le cyclamate dans un seul échantillon) et 13.33% relatives à la qualité microbiologique (dû principalement à la flore fongique, plus particulièrement aux levures et secondairement aux coliformes). Quatre classes sont issues de la classification hiérarchique et confirment l’analyse en composante principale; ces classes ne se distinguent que pour les paramètres acésulfame K et aspartame.Mots-clés: édulcorants, CLHP, BRSA, contrôle de qualité, Djelfa.Risque result of sweaters refreshing soft drinks without alcohol consumption The aim of this study is predict chemical and microbiological quality of different type of refreshing soft drinks without alcohol (BRSA) marketed in Djelfa city.     Qualité microbiologique du lait cru ovin collecte dans la steppe centrale de l’Algérie

    L’objectif de l’étude consiste à évaluer la qualité microbiologique du lait cru ovin collecté localement, en milieu steppique Algérien dans la région de Djelfa situé à 300 km au sud d’Alger. Au total 51 échantillons de lait ont été prélevés pour des fins analytiques. La contamination moyenne est de 2,3.107 cfu/mL pour la flore totale contre 1,1.105 pour les coliformes totaux et 1,5.104 pour les coliformes fécaux. Pour la flore fongique, les laits sont plus contaminés en levures qu’en moisissures (2,4.105 vs 3,4.103 germes/mL respectivement). Les Streptocoques fécaux sont détectés chez 43,14% des échantillons par contre E.coli n’est décelée que chez 17,65% des laits. Par ailleurs, 28% des prélèvements sont positifs vis-à-vis de Clostridium contre 9,8% pour Staphylococcus aureus. En revanche, tous les laits sont exempts de Salmonella. Pour ce qui est de la recherche des anticorps brucelliques, 13,73% des laits analysés sont positifs au Ring-test. La mauvaise qualité du lait reflète bien les conditions déplorables de production et la non-observance des bonnes pratiques hygiéniques lors de la traiteMots-clés : brebis, lait cru, qualité hygiénique, microorganismes pathogènes, Algérie.Microbiological quality of raw ewe’s milk in Algerian middle steppeThe objective of this study was to assess the microbiological quality of raw milk sheep collected in Algerian steppe. A total of 51 samples of bulk milk were examined. The results obtained show the unsatisfactory quality of milk analyzed. The average contamination is 2,3.107 cfu/ml for the total flora against 1,1.105 for total coliforms and 1,5.104 for fecal coliforms. For the fungal flora, milk is more contamined with yeast than fungi (2,4.105 vs 3,4.103 germes/ml respectively). Fecal streptococci were detected in 43,14% of the samples were E.coli is detected in 17,65% of the milk. In addition, 28% of samples are positive for Clostridium against 9,8% for Staphylococcus aureus. All milk are free from Salmonella. In terms of Brucella antibody, 13,73% of milk are ring test positive.     Prevalence and risk factors of intestinal protozoan infection among symptomatic and asymptomatic populations in rural and urban areas of southern Algeria

    Background: Intestinal parasitic infections are amongst the most common infections worldwide and have been identified as one of the most significant causes of morbidity and mortality among disadvantaged populations. This comparative cross-sectional study was conducted to assess the prevalence of intestinal protozoan infections and to identify the significant risk factors associated with intestinal parasitic infections in Laghouat province, Southern Algeria. Methods: A comparative cross-sectional study was conducted, involving 623 symptomatic and 1654 asymptomatic subjects. Structured questionnaires were used to identify environmental, socio demographic and behavioral factors. Stool specimens were collected and examined using direct wet mount, formalin-ether concentration, xenic in vitro culture and staining methods. Results: A highly significant difference of prevalence was found between symptomatic (82.3%) and asymptomatic subjects (14.9%), with the majority attributable to protozoan infection. The most common species in the symptomatic subjects were Blastocystis spp. (43.8%), E. histolytica/dispar (25.4%) and Giardia intestinalis (14.6%) and more rarely Enterobius vermicularis (02.1%), Teania spp. (0.6%) and Trichuris trichiura (0.2%), while in asymptomatic population Blastocystis spp. (8%), Entamoeba coli (3.3%) and Entamoeba histolytica/dispar (2.5%) were the most common parasites detected with no case of helminth infection. Multivariate log-linear analysis showed that contact with animals was the main risk factor for transmission of these protozoa in both populations. Furthermore, living in rural areas was significantly associated with combined protozoan infection in the asymptomatic population, whereas, in the symptomatic population an increasing trend of protozoan infection was detected in the hot season. In addition, Blastocystis spp. and G. intestinalis infection were found to be associated with host sex and contact with animals across the study period. Conclusions: Based on these results, several strategies are recommended in order to effectively reduce these infections including good animal husbandry practices, health education focused on good personal hygiene practices and adequate sanitation

    Are Trp53 rescue of Brca1 embryonic lethality and Trp53/Brca1 breast cancer association related?

    Brca1 is involved in multiple biological pathways including DNA damage repair, transcriptional regulation, and cell-cycle progression. A complex pattern of interactions of Brca1 with Trp53 has also emerged. Xu and coworkers found that haploid loss of Trp53 significantly reduces the embryonic lethality observed in mice with a homozygous in-frame deletion of Brca1 exon 11. They report that widespread apoptosis correlates with the embryonic lethality resulting from this homozygous Δ11 Brca1 mutation. A mechanism responsible for Brca1-associated carcinogenesis is proposed. These experiments extend our knowledge of a complex Brca1/Trp53 relationship. However, the precise mechanisms through which Brca1 interacts with Trp53 to suppress mammary tumor formation have yet to be elucidated

    BRCA1 is an essential regulator of heart function and survival following myocardial infarction

    The tumour suppressor BRCA1 is mutated in familial breast and ovarian cancer but its role in protecting other tissues from DNA damage has not been explored. Here we show a new role for BRCA1 as a gatekeeper of cardiac function and survival. In mice, loss of BRCA1 in cardiomyocytes results in adverse cardiac remodelling, poor ventricular function and higher mortality in response to ischaemic or genotoxic stress. Mechanistically, loss of cardiomyocyte BRCA1 results in impaired DNA double-strand break repair and activated p53-mediated pro-apoptotic signalling culminating in increased cardiomyocyte apoptosis, whereas deletion of the p53 gene rescues BRCA1-deficient mice from cardiac failure. In human adult and fetal cardiac tissues, ischaemia induces double-strand breaks and upregulates BRCA1 expression. These data reveal BRCA1 as a novel and essential adaptive response molecule shielding cardiomyocytes from DNA damage, apoptosis and heart dysfunction. BRCA1 mutation carriers, in addition to risk of breast and ovarian cancer, may be at a previously unrecognized risk of cardiac failure
