Discovering Herstory and Construction of Alternative Female Identities in Fawzia Afzal-Khan’s Lahore with Love: Growing Up with Girlfriends, Pakistani Style

The aim of this research is to re-explore and delineate the historical narrative of Pakistan depicted in Fawzia Afzal-Khan’s Lahore with Love from a female perspective. Consequently, the study manifests weaving of herstory to affirm the presence of a female identity in the universal discourse of Pakistani history. The aim of this research paper is manifold as it also explores the construction of alternate identities of Pakistani women in Afzal-Khan’s memoir. The researcher attains this objective by showing a holistic picture of Pakistani history by highlighting the various herstories in this text. Each female voice lends a different vantage point to reflect the female discourse of Pakistan’s past through its effect on women. Moreover, the metamorphosis in each character is traced by analyzing the herstoies which subsequently reveal the construction of an alternate female identity as a defense mechanism to survive in the phallocentric norms of the country. The significance of this research study lies in critical exploration of the memoir from a feminist gaze to accentuate the presence of women who had been silenced at the behest of socio-political ambiance and class structures. This research fills the gap in South Asian memoir writing which has not been studied under a feminist framework. The tool of this study is feminist theory with specific focus on Herstory by Robin Morgan and identity crisis for the female gender. Future researchers can explicate French feminism in Afzal-Khan’s memoir to deconstruct feminist linguistic patterns rendering an epitome of E`criture fe`minine. It is an exploratory, inductive and qualitative research with specific focus on the grounded theory pattern. It is not an inter-disciplinary research. Inheritance of resistance to specific races of crown and stem rust, to Helminthosporium blight, and of certain agronomic characters of oats

Observed segregation for reaction to stem rust in several oat crosses was on a monohybrid basis except in the cross Sac x Hajira-Joanette where segregation was observed to be on a three-factor basis. A mesothetic type of reaction to the composite of races 2 and 8 was observed in seedling plants classified as susceptible in two crosses, Mindo x Tama and Sac x Hajira-Joanette. Since no segregation was observed for reaction to race 2 in either of the two crosses, one factor pair for resistance to race 8 must be allelic to the one governing resistance to race 2 possessed by Tama and Hajira x Joanette. Segregation for reaction to races 1 and 45 of crown rust was on a monogenic, digenic or trigenic basis in different crosses investigated. Five different factors for resistance to crown rust were identified in this study: A and B, complementary dominant factors which give the Bond type (type 0) of resistance of race 1; L, a simple dominant which gives the Landhafer type of resistance (type 0-1) to races 1 and 45; S, a simple dominant from Santa Fe which governs resistance (type 0) to races 1 and 45; and V, a simple dominant of the hypersensitive type (type 2) from Victoria which also governs resistance to races 1 and 45. The factor from Santa Fe (S) appears to be of great promise as a source of resistance to the relatively prevalent race 45. Many desirable agronomic progenies possessing resistance to races 1 and 45 from the cross of Santa Fe x Clinton have been selected for further testing. Very few selections have been made from Mindo x Landhafer for testing in F4. The L factor does not appear to be too satisfactory under the conditions of this experiment for resistance in the mature plant stage

Synthesis of CuO-NPS by simple wet chemical method using various dicarboxylic acid salts as precursors: Spectral characterization and in-vitro biological evaluation

    Get PDF
In this study, a simple chemical reduction method was employed to synthesize CuO-NPs.  Various dicarboxylic acids were converted into Cu(II) salt of dicarboxylic acid which were used as precursors. NPs were produced by reducing precursors with NaBH4. Characteristics of synthesized NPs were investigated by using important analytical techniques including Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermo gravimetric analysis (TGA) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Developed NPs were investigated for their antibacterial activity against a range of bacterial strains by employing agar well diffusion method. CuO-NPs exhibited good to moderate activity against E-Coli, B. Subtilis and poor activity against K. pneumonia and Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). It was found that amongst all experienced compounds sample 2 showed good activity with minimum inhibition concentration (MIC) 10 µg/mL (zone of inhibition: 22± 0.12 mm) while sample 3 showed poor activity with MIC 40 µg/mL (zone of inhibition: 8.0 ± 0.18 mm).                     KEY WORDS: CuO-NPs, Dicarboxylic acids, Sodium borohydride, Antibacterial study   Bull. A Single-Tube, Functional Marker-Based Multiplex PCR Assay for Simultaneous Detection of Major Bacterial Blight Resistance Genes Xa21, xa13 and xa5 in Rice

AbstractIn marker-assisted breeding for bacterial blight (BB) resistance in rice, three major resistance genes, viz., Xa21, xa13 and xa5, are routinely deployed either singly or in combinations. As efficient and functional markers are yet to be developed for xa13 and xa5, we have developed simple PCR-based functional markers for both the genes. For xa13, we designed a functional PCR-based marker, xa13-prom targeting the InDel polymorphism in the promoter of candidate gene Os8N3 located on chromosome 8 of rice. With respect to xa5, a multiplex-PCR based functional marker system, named xa5FM, consisting of two sets of primer pairs targeting the 2-bp functional nucleotide polymorphism in the exon II of the gene TFIIAɤ5 (candidate for xa5), has been developed. Both xa13-prom and xa5FM can differentiate the resistant and susceptible alleles for xa13 and xa5, respectively, in a co-dominant fashion. Using these two functional markers along with the already reported functional PCR-based marker for Xa21 (pTA248), we designed a single-tube multiplex PCR based assay for simultaneous detection of all the three major resistance genes and demonstrated the utility of the multiplex marker system in a segregating population

The dilemmas of providing welfare in an ethnically diverse state : seeking reconciliation in the role of a 'reflexive practitioner'

    Get PDF
Despite an increasing commitment to tackle disadvantage and discrimination, welfare states in the West struggle to provide accessible and appropriate health and social care to people of minority ethnic populations. This article analyses the dilemmas of welfare provision in an ethnically diverse state by drawing on empirical findings from a qualitative study exploring the perceptions and experiences of family life and social support for people of Pakistani origin living in the UK, and its interface with the state as a site of potentially competing and conflicting sets of social values. We conclude by suggesting that a notion of 'reflexive practitioner' is fundamental to generating a critical insight that can deal with the tensions posed by diversity for a welfare state
