    Active Listening in MTI Interpreting Introductory Course for Chinese Students

    MTI students who are native Chinese, though already acquired a reasonable level of English, were not able to adequately interpret the English speech into Chinese at the beginning of the course, mostly probably because of their inadequate comprehension. In order to be able to develop interpreting skills, students should be able to acquire the ability of active listening. The purpose of this study is to try to figure out indicators of active listening at the beginning stage of the interpreting course for the teachers to refer to in the identification of this stage of students’ development and form teaching strategies accordingly. The study is based upon the observation and analysis of the corpus of the national finals of the 3rd CTPC Cup All China Interpreting Contest, whose contestants were at the stage of active listening, and yet to be further developed to be professionals. It was found out that there are six indicators showing the ability of active listening and four types of practices can be formed based upon the six indicators. The research limitation is that it is yet to be further studied on how long the teaching of active listening should last in the interpreting course. In the interpreting courses, it is possible for the teachers to refer to the six indicators and the four types of exercises to help the students get through this stage of development and lay a good foundation for their further development in interpreting

    Error Analysis in Consecutive Interpreting of Students With Chinese and English Language Pairs

    Error analysis is a very important approach to understand problem triggers of the processing capacity of interpreting students. Problem triggers has been studied by scholars of Interpreting Studies, such as Daniel Gile, a representative of cognitive processing paradigm, and others. An error analysis focusing on students is meant to understand what problems the students meet with in the process of training, and is also meant to discuss on the possibility of avoiding the errors through adequate training. A preliminary analysis has shown that though with good basic knowledge of English, students did make errors in the face of the problem triggers. Hypothesis can be formed based on literature review and a preliminary analysis. Hypothesis 1: Numbers can be problem triggers for students in consecutive interpreting. Hypothesis 2: Nouns (or names) can be problem triggers for students in consecutive interpreting. Hypothesis 3: Logical relationship can be a problem trigger for students in consecutive interpreting

    Characterization of ultra-deeply buried middle Triassic Leikoupo marine carbonate petroleum system (!) in the Western Sichuan depression, China

    Ultra-deeply buried (>5000 m) marine carbonate reservoirs have gradually become important exploration targets. This research focuses on providing an understanding of the basic elements of the ultra-deeply buried Middle Triassic Leikoupo marine carbonate petroleum system within the Western Sichuan Depression, China. Comprehensive analyses of organic geochemistry, natural gas, and C–H–He–Ne–Ar isotope compositions suggest that the reservoir is charged with compound gases from four source rock units including the Permian Longtan, Middle Triassic Leikoupo, Late Triassic Maantang and Xiaotangzi formations. Approximately a 50-m thick outcrop and 100-m length of drilling cores were examined in detail, and 108 samples were collected from six different exploration wells in order to conduct petrographic and petrophysical analyses. Thin-section and scanning electron microscope (SEM) observations, helium porosity and permeability measurements, mercury injection capillary pressure (MICP) analysis, and wire-line logging (5,500–6,900 m) indicate that the reservoir lithologies include argillaceous algal limestones, dolograinstones, crystalline dolostones, and microbially-derived stromatolitic and thrombolitic dolostones. Reservoir properties exhibit extreme heterogeneity due to different paleogeographic environmental controls and mutual interactions between constructive (e.g., epigenetic paleo-karstification, burial dissolution, structural movement, pressure-solution and dolomitization) and destructive (e.g., physical/chemical compaction, cementation, infilling, recrystallization, and replacement) diagenetic processes. An unconformity-related epigenetic karstification zone was identified in the uppermost fourth member of the Leikoupo Formation, which has developed secondary solution-enhanced pores, vugs, and holes that resulted in higher porosity (1.8–14.2%) and permeability (0.2–7.7 mD). The homogeneity and tightness of the reservoir increases with depth below the unconformity, and it is characterized by primary intergranular and intracrystalline pores, solution pores, fractures, stylolites, and micropores with a lower helium porosity (0.6–4.1%) and permeability (0.003–125.2 mD). Regional seals consist of the Late Triassic Xujiahe Formation, comprised of ~300 m of mudstones that are overlain by ~5,000-m thick of Jurassic to Quaternary continental argillaceous overburden rocks. Effective traps are dominated by a combination of structural-stratigraphic types. Paleo- reservoir crude oil cracking, wet-gases, and dry-gases from three successive hydrocarbon generation processes supplied the sufficient hydrocarbon resources. The homogenization temperatures of the hydrocarbon-associated aqueous fluid inclusions range from 98–130 °C and 130–171 °C, which suggests hydrocarbon charging occurred between 220–170 Ma and 130–90 Ma, respectively. One-dimensional basin evolution models combined with structural geologic and seismic profiles across wells PZ1-XQS1-CK1-XCS1-TS1 show that hydrocarbon migration and entrapment mainly occurred via the unconformity and interconnected fault-fracture networks with migration and charging driven by formation overpressure, abnormal fluid flow pressure, and buoyancy forces during the Indosinian and Yanshanian orogenies, with experiencing additional transformation occurring during the Himalayan orogeny. The predicted estimated reserves reached ~300 × 109 m3. The results provide excellent scientific implications for similar sedimentary basin studies, it is believed that abundant analogous deeply buried marine carbonate hydrocarbon resources yet to be discovered in China and elsewhere worldwide in the near future

    Emerging technologies and their impact on regulatory science

    There is an evolution and increasing need for the utilization of emerging cellular, molecular and in silico technologies and novel approaches for safety assessment of food, drugs, and personal care products. Convergence of these emerging technologies is also enabling rapid advances and approaches that may impact regulatory decisions and approvals. Although the development of emerging technologies may allow rapid advances in regulatory decision making, there is concern that these new technologies have not been thoroughly evaluated to determine if they are ready for regulatory application, singularly or in combinations. The magnitude of these combined technical advances may outpace the ability to assess fit for purpose and to allow routine application of these new methods for regulatory purposes. There is a need to develop strategies to evaluate the new technologies to determine which ones are ready for regulatory use. The opportunity to apply these potentially faster, more accurate, and cost-effective approaches remains an important goal to facilitate their incorporation into regulatory use. However, without a clear strategy to evaluate emerging technologies rapidly and appropriately, the value of these efforts may go unrecognized or may take longer. It is important for the regulatory science field to keep up with the research in these technically advanced areas and to understand the science behind these new approaches. The regulatory field must understand the critical quality attributes of these novel approaches and learn from each other's experience so that workforces can be trained to prepare for emerging global regulatory challenges. Moreover, it is essential that the regulatory community must work with the technology developers to harness collective capabilities towards developing a strategy for evaluation of these new and novel assessment tools

    Structural equation modeling analysis of determinants of barriers to breast self-examination among Eastern Chinese women.

    BackgroundThis study aimed to establish a structural equation model to determine the associations among knowledge of breast cancer, beliefs about breast self-examination (BSE), BSE practice, socio-economic status (SES), and barriers to BSE among Eastern Chinese women.MethodsAn online cross-sectional correlational survey of 2026 women from Eastern China was undertaken by a self-administered questionnaire in 2020. Structural equation modeling was utilized for examining the interrelationships between BSE barriers and other variables.ResultsOur results suggested that BSE barriers were significantly and negatively related to SES, BSE beliefs, and BSE practices (β = -0.176, p ConclusionsBSE barriers were influenced by SES, breast cancer knowledge, BSE beliefs and BSE practices. Our results warn that breast cancer prevention education should strengthen knowledge of practical methods rather than general knowledge. Therefore, intervention strategies designed to develop BSE and breast cancer prevention should take into account multiple factors, in particular finding more effective ways for the public to turn knowledge into a motivator rather than a barrier

    Soil Moisture Estimation for Winter-Wheat Waterlogging Monitoring by Assimilating Remote Sensing Inversion Data into the Distributed Hydrology Soil Vegetation Model

    Waterlogging crop disasters are caused by continuous and excessive soil water in the upper layer of soil. In order to enable waterlogging monitoring, it is important to collect continuous and accurate soil moisture data. The distributed hydrology soil vegetation model (DHSVM) is selected as the basic hydrological model for soil moisture estimation and winter-wheat waterlogging monitoring. To handle the error accumulation of the DHSVM and the poor continuity of remote sensing (RS) inversion data, an agro-hydrological model that assimilates RS inversion data into the DHSVM is used for winter-wheat waterlogging monitoring. The soil moisture content maps retrieved from satellite images are assimilated into the DHSVM by the successive correction method. Moreover, in order to reduce the modeling error accumulation, monthly and real-time RS inversion maps that truly reflect local soil moisture distributions are regularly assimilated into the agro-hydrological modeling process each month. The results show that the root mean square errors (RMSEs) of the simulated soil moisture value at two in situ experiment points were 0.02077 and 0.02383, respectively, which were 9.96% and 12.02% of the measured value. From the accurate and continuous soil moisture results based on the agro-hydrological assimilation model, the waterlogging-damaged ratio and grade distribution information for winter-wheat waterlogging were extracted. The results indicate that there were almost no high-damaged-ratio and severe waterlogging damage areas in Lixin County, which was consistent with the local field investigation

    Socioeconomic status index is an independent determinant of breast cancer screening practices: Evidence from Eastern China.

    BackgroundBreast cancer is the most prevalent malignancy affecting Chinese women, and early routine screening is incredibly important for its prevention and control. This study aimed to investigate the role of socioeconomic status (SES) in female breast cancer screening practices using the composite SES index.MethodsThis cross-sectional study involved 1816 women in Eastern China. Data were collected using an online self-administered questionnaire from January 2020 to May 2021. We used principal component analysis to construct the composite SES index using educational level, annual household income, and occupation. Logistic regression was used to analyze the association between the SES index and breast cancer screening utilization.ResultsOf the participants, 19.27% reported having performed breast self-examination, 12.89% reported having undergone clinical breast examination, and 3.52% reported having received mammography. The SES has a significant influence on the patronage of female breast cancer screening in Eastern China. The composite SES index was found to have a positive and significant association with breast cancer screening practices. An interaction was found between the SES index and patient characteristics, such as health awareness, marital status, and location of residence. In addition, the SES index had a positive effect on breast cancer-related knowledge.ConclusionsSocioeconomic inequalities existed in Eastern China and were related to breast cancer screening patronage. The composite SES index was identified as a significant determinant of breast cancer screening practices. Our results highlighted the negative impacts of socioeconomic inequities on female breast cancer screening utilization. This suggests that reducing socioeconomic inequalities in breast cancer screening requires more focused interventions and concerted outreach activities for groups with lower education levels, lower income, or lower occupational classes

    Diagenesis and Reservoir Evolution Model of the Ediacaran Dengying Formation in the Sichuan Basin: Evidence from Laser Ablation U-Pb Dating and In Situ Isotope Analysis

    The microbial dolomite of the Ediacaran Dengying Fm., Sichuan Basin, SW China is endowed with abundant oil and gas resources. A complex diagenetic history greatly complicates the development of such microbial dolomite reservoirs, and has severely restrained hydrocarbon exploration. This study focused on key field profiles in Eastern Sichuan and aimed to decipher the origin and evolution of dolomites, using novel techniques, including elemental mapping, laser ablation U-Pb dating as well as carbon, oxygen, and strontium isotope analyses. Additionally, we compared the diagenesis and reservoir development model for the Dengying microbial dolomites of the Central Sichuan to other areas, with the aim to provide practical guidance for oil and gas exploration across the entire Sichuan Basin. Our results have shown that the Ediacaran microbial dolomite in Eastern Sichuan experienced four stages of diagenetic modification–specifically: (1) syn-sedimentary dolomitization; (2) penecontemporaneous cementation of fibrous dolomite cement; (3) bladed dolomite and brown-dark very fine crystalline dolomite cementation during the Ordovician; and (4) fine crystalline dolomite and medium-coarse crystalline dolomite cementation during the Silurian-Devonian. Petrology and geochemistry data imply that each diagenetic phase of dolomitization was mainly sourced from marine-dominated fluids. The influence of tectonically related fluids was rarely noted. Significantly, U-Pb ages of these dolomites reveal that the history of dolomite infill to pores within the Eastern Sichuan Basin clearly post-dated that in the Central Sichuan region, resulting in high porosities (6%–11%) that favored hydrocarbon accumulation. This study suggests that the platform margin at the eastern edge of the Xuanhan-Kaijiang paleo-uplift is favorable as the next key exploration target for microbial dolomites in the Sichuan Basin
