Supporting Men of Color Along the Educational Pipeline

    Get PDF
This brief outlines research on men of color in terms of access to and success in higher education, specifically pre-college programs, and policy initiatives designed to address these issues. It includes four interviews with practitioners and policy researchers and highlights exemplary programs that work with students of color along the educational pipeline and that can serve as resources for all who work to support men of color, primarily college access practitioners

    3D Printed Ear Canal Model

A multi-material ear canal model was designed and created from CT scans of an actual patient. This ear canal model serves as a training model for trainees, surgeons and doctors to develop a better understanding of the anatomy and physiology of the ear by physically looking, touching and testing the model. The major task taken was to establish and identify the area of interest provided with the files of medical scans by using 3D Slicer. The files were then converted to a stereolithographic (STL) file where it was able to be edited for smoothing in programs such as Meshmixer or MeshLab in order to 3D print a high quality model that could be used effectively. An operate model was obtained that satisfied the given need for ideal surgical training purposes; where the design is composed of a two piece multi-material model – the outer ear is flexible and the inner ear canal is rigid. A replicated membrane is attached to the end of the inner ear canal to represent the tympanic membrane. Lastly, the entire model is mounted on a magnetic stand that has a 360° rotation for trainees or doctors to adjust for ideal positioning. This project was very informative; while being educated on the current health needs, we were also able to serve the local physicians by producing the requested devices. The ear canal model is ready to use and can be used for a pre-surgery mechanism to allow for resourceful practice. Trainees in particular who are just beginning to learn can take advantages of using this model. Common type of surgery performed includes Otitis Media with effusion (OME), which is the accumulation of fluid buildup, often in the middle of the ear, with no sign or other symptoms of an ear infection. Roughly about two million cases of otitis media with effusion occur annually in the United Stateshttps://scholarscompass.vcu.edu/capstone/1216/thumbnail.jp

Eurasian watermilfoil biomass associated with insect herbivores in New York

    Get PDF
A study of aquatic plant biomass within Cayuga Lake, New York spans twelve years from 1987-1998. The exotic Eurasian watermilfoil ( Myriophyllum spicatum L.) decreased in the northwest end of the lake from 55% of the total biomass in 1987 to 0.4% in 1998 and within the southwest end from 50% in 1987 to 11% in 1998. Concurrent with the watermilfoil decline was the resurgence of native species of submersed macrophytes. During this time we recorded for the first time in Cayuga Lake two herbivorous insect species: the aquatic moth Acentria ephemerella , first observed in 1991, and the aquatic weevil Euhrychiopsis lecontei , first found in 1996 . Densities of Acentria in southwest Cayuga Lake averaged 1.04 individuals per apical meristem of Eurasian watermilfoil for the three-year period 1996-1998. These same meristems had Euhrychiopsis densities on average of only 0.02 individuals per apical meristem over the same three-year period. A comparison of herbivore densities and lake sizes from five lakes in 1997 shows that Acentria densities correlate positively with lake surface area and mean depth, while Euhrychiopsis densities correlate negatively with lake surface area and mean depth. In these five lakes, Acentria densities correlate negatively with percent composition and dry mass of watermilfoil. However, Euhrychiopsis densities correlate positively with percent composition and dry mass of watermilfoil. Finally, Acentria densities correlate negatively with Euhrychiopsis densities suggesting interspecific competition

A Composite Counterstorytelling: Memoirs of African American Military Students in Hawaii Public Schools

    Get PDF
There are social, educational and behavioral problems for African American students in Hawaii public schools. Utilizing Critical Race Theory as a lens for analysis, the perceptions and experiences of these students regarding race, ethnic identity, military lineage, and self-definition are addressed. A composite counterstory of the researcher\u27s and 115 African American students\u27 experiences and reflections is portrayed through two siblings\u27 memoirs. The impact of the counterstory challenges readers to see similar themes, perceptions, and experiences of being Black, military- affiliated, and a student in Hawaii in a story format as all events are integrated into two experiences, one male and one female

A Racial Impact Analysis of HB 834/SB 449: The Virginia Growth & Opportunity Act

    Get PDF
GO Virginia is an economic development initiative that seeks to preempt the harsh effects of federal budget cuts on Virginia’s economy, which is overly dependent on public-sector jobs. It promotes private sector job growth and workforce development through the use of state-based grants to invest in regionally significant capital projects that call for collaboration between localities, businesses, and education. It is important to be intentional in pursuing GO Virginia’s goals, otherwise this legislation may only allocate grants to institutions, organizations, and localities that already have sizeable resources. A critical question rests on how to ensure that low-income and minority communities can maximize the benefits of the legislation. The populations that are most affected by this legislation would depend on how the legislation is implemented. If minority communities are excluded from the process, then it is likely these communities would be insulated from the positive outcomes. It is imperative that minorities are adequately represented in the decision making process. This report explores why minority communities should be represented on the regional councils, which are the catalysts for the proposal process. By being proactive there is an opportunity to provide the same advantages to minority business development. We also explore how to strengthen the minority workforce to better compete for in-demand careers within the emerging industries that this legislation sets out to promote
