    The age of information in gossip networks

    We introduce models of gossip based communication networks in which each node is simultaneously a sensor, a relay and a user of information. We model the status of ages of information between nodes as a discrete time Markov chain. In this setting a gossip transmission policy is a decision made at each node regarding what type of information to relay at any given time (if any). When transmission policies are based on random decisions, we are able to analyze the age of information in certain illustrative structured examples either by means of an explicit analysis, an algorithm or asymptotic approximations.     A Unified Performance Model for Best-Effort Services in WiMAX Networks

    Based on the work from the IEEE Working Group 802.16 and ETSI HiperMAN Working Group, the WiMAX (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access) technology is defined by the WiMAX Forum to support fixed and mobile broadband wireless access. In the standard (IEEE 802.16 standard, 2009), it defines several air interface variants, including WirelessMAN-SC, WirelessMAN-OFDM, WirelessMAN-OFDMA and WirelessMAN-HUMAN. WiMAX networks can be operated in two different modes: point to multi-point (PMP) mode and mesh mode. Under the PMP mode, all traffics from subscriber stations (SSs) are controlled by the base station. Mesh mode is a distributed architecture where traffics are allowed to route not only between SSs and the base station but also between SSs. In this chapter, we focus on the WirelessMAN-SC air interface operating in the PMP mode. In WiMAX networks, quality of service (QoS) is provided through five different services classes in the MAC layer (Andrews et al., 2007): 1. Unsolicited grant service (UGS) is designed for real-time applications with constant data rate. These applications always have stringent delay requirement, such as T1/E1. 2. Real-time polling service (rtPS) is designed for real-time applications with variable data rate. These applications have less stringent delay requirement, such as MPEG and VoIP without silence suppression. 3. Extended real-time polling service (ertPS) builds on the efficiency of both UGS and rtPS. It is designed for the applications with variable data rate such as VoIP with silence suppression. 4. Non-real-time polling service (nrtPS) is designed to support variable bit rate non-real-time applications with certain bandwidth guarantee, such as high bandwidth FTP. 5. Best effort service (BE) is designed for best effort applications such as HTTP. To meet the requirements of different service classes, several bandwidth request mechanisms have been defined, namely, unsolicited granting, unicast polling, broadcast polling and piggybacking.     Recent Progress in Activity-Based Travel Demand Modeling: Rising Data and Applicability

    Over 30 years have passed since activity-based travel demand models (ABMs) emerged to overcome the limitations of the preceding models which have dominated the field for over 50 years. Activity-based models are valuable tools for transportation planning and analysis, detailing the tour and mode-restricted nature of the household and individual travel choices. Nevertheless, no single approach has emerged as a dominant method, and research continues to improve ABM features to make them more accurate, robust, and practical. This paper describes the state of art and practice, including the ongoing ABM research covering both demand and supply considerations. Despite the substantial developments, ABM’s abilities in reflecting behavioral realism are still limited. Possible solutions to address this issue include increasing the inaccuracy of the primary data, improved integrity of ABMs across days of the week, and tackling the uncertainty via integrating demand and supply. Opportunities exist to test, the feasibility of spatial transferability of ABMs to new geographical contexts along with expanding the applicability of ABMs in transportation policy-making

    On-road virtual reality autonomous vehicle (VRAV) simulator : An empirical study on user experience

    Autonomous-vehicle (AV) technologies are rapidly advancing, but a great deal remains to be learned about their interaction and perception on public roads. Research in this area usually relies on AV trials using naturalistic driving which are expensive with various legal and ethical obstacles designed to keep the general public safe. The emerging concept of Wizard-of-Oz simulation is a promising solution to this problem wherein the driver of a standard vehicle is hidden from the passenger using a physical partition, providing the illusion of riding in an AV. Furthermore, head-mounted display (HMD) virtual reality (VR) has been proposed as a means of providing a Wizard-of-Oz protocol for on-road simulations of AVs. Such systems have potential to support a variety of study conditions at low cost, enabling simulation of a variety of vehicles, driving conditions, and circumstances. However, the feasibility of such systems has yet to be shown. This study makes use of a within-subjects factorial design for examining and evaluating a virtual reality autonomous vehicle (VRAV) system, with the aim of better understanding the differences between stationary and on-road simulations, both with and without HMD VR. More specifically, this study examines the effects on user experience of conditions including presence, arousal, simulator sickness and task workload. Participants indicated a realistic and immersive driving experience as part of subjective evaluation of the VRAV system, indicating the system is a promising tool for human-automation interaction and future AV technology developments.acceptedVersionPeer reviewe

    23:1 Bandwidth ratio quasi‐lumped component balun on a multilayer organic substrate

    In this study, the authors present the design and development of a novel ultra-wideband coupled-line balun on a multilayer liquid crystal polymer substrate. The balun is designed using a quarter wavelength (λ/4) asymmetric broadside coupled line. The defected ground structure and a lumped phase compensation circuit are developed to achieve wide bandwidth performance for the balun. The balun has a measured bandwidth ratio of 23:1, from 80 to 1860 MHz. Within the operating bandwidth, the experimental results demonstrate that the balun achieves an input return loss of better than 10 dB, an insertion loss of better than 1 dB, an amplitude imbalance of better than ±0.4 dB and a phase imbalance of better than ±10°. The size of the balun is 40.64 mm × 40.64 mm or 0.22 λg × 0.22 λg, where λg is the guided wavelength at the centre frequency of 970 MHz

    Identification of the protein kinases Pyk3 and Phg2 as regulators of the STATc-mediated response to hyperosmolarity

    Cellular adaptation to changes in environmental osmolarity is crucial for cell survival. In Dictyostelium, STATc is a key regulator of the transcriptional response to hyperosmotic stress. Its phosphorylation and consequent activation is controlled by two signaling branches, one cGMP- and the other Ca(2+)-dependent, of which many signaling components have yet to be identified. The STATc stress signalling pathway feeds back on itself by upregulating the expression of STATc and STATc-regulated genes. Based on microarray studies we chose two tyrosine-kinase like proteins, Pyk3 and Phg2, as possible modulators of STATc phosphorylation and generated single and double knock-out mutants to them. Transcriptional regulation of STATc and STATc dependent genes was disturbed in pyk3(-), phg2(-), and pyk3(-)/phg2(-) cells. The absence of Pyk3 and/or Phg2 resulted in diminished or completely abolished increased transcription of STATc dependent genes in response to sorbitol, 8-Br-cGMP and the Ca(2+) liberator BHQ. Also, phospho-STATc levels were significantly reduced in pyk3(-) and phg2(-) cells and even further decreased in pyk3(-)/phg2(-) cells. The reduced phosphorylation was mirrored by a significant delay in nuclear translocation of GFP-STATc. The protein tyrosine phosphatase 3 (PTP3), which dephosphorylates and inhibits STATc, is inhibited by stress-induced phosphorylation on S448 and S747. Use of phosphoserine specific antibodies showed that Phg2 but not Pyk3 is involved in the phosphorylation of PTP3 on S747. In pull-down assays Phg2 and PTP3 interact directly, suggesting that Phg2 phosphorylates PTP3 on S747 in vivo. Phosphorylation of S448 was unchanged in phg2(-) cells. We show that Phg2 and an, as yet unknown, S448 protein kinase are responsible for PTP3 phosphorylation and hence its inhibition, and that Pyk3 is involved in the regulation of STATc by either directly or indirectly activating it. Our results add further complexities to the regulation of STATc, which presumably ensure its optimal activation in response to different environmental cues
