Predictors of health-related quality of life in patients with colorectal cancer
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Most studies that have identified variables associated with the health-related quality of life (HRQL) of patients with colorectal cancer have been cross-sectional or included patients with other diagnoses. The objectives of this study were to identify predictors of HRQL in patients with colorectal cancer and interpret the clinical importance of the results.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>We conducted a population-based longitudinal study of patients identified through three regions of the California Cancer Registry. Surveys were completed by 568 patients approximately 9 and 19 months post-diagnosis. Three HRQL outcomes from the Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy – Colorectal (FACT-C) were evaluated: social/family well-being (SWB), emotional well-being (EWB) and the Trial Outcome Index (TOI), which is a colorectal cancer-specific summary measure of physical function and well-being. Sociodemographic, cancer/health, and healthcare variables were assessed in multivariable regression models. We computed the difference in predicted HRQL scores corresponding to a large difference in a predictor variable, defined as a 1 standard deviation difference for interval variables or the difference relative to the reference category for nominal variables. The effect of an explanatory variable on HRQL was considered clinically meaningful if the predicted score difference was at least as large as the minimally important difference.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Common predictors of better TOI, SWB and EWB were better general health and factors related to better perceived quality of cancer care. Predictor variables in addition to general health and perceived quality of care were identified only for SWB. Being married/living as married was associated with better SWB, whereas being male or of Hispanic ethnicity was associated with worse SWB. Among the sociodemographic, cancer/health, and healthcare variables evaluated, only Hispanic ethnicity had a clinically meaningful effect on an HRQL outcome.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Our findings, particularly the information on the clinical importance of predictor variables, can help clinicians identify patients who may be at risk for poor future HRQL. Potentially modifiable factors were related to perceived quality of cancer care; thus, future research should evaluate whether improving these factors improves HRQL.</p
Contrasts in China and Soviet reform: sub-national and national causes
Why did reform in China and the former Soviet Union produce drastically different outcomes? Why did some provinces in China embrace faster economic reform than others? This article argues that the state sector and reform initiatives in the sub-national units, reform strategies, entrenchment and maturation of central planning, the size of the defence industry, policy choice and the historical context help explain the differences in Soviet and Chinese reform courses and outcomes. A predominant state sector in the former Soviet republics had stifled local reform initiatives. Gorbachev resorted to democratisation in order to unbolt the gate for popular support for marketisation, yet resulting in the breakup of the Soviet Union and destabilising the economy. In China, some provinces had sizable non-state sectors and were inclined to push forth marketization. Reform resulted in expanding non-state sectors, generating high growth and encouraging the regime to maintain its monopoly of power. China’s reform also benefited from a yet-to-be-entrenched and rudimentary central planning, a small defence sector, popular backlash against past policies, and reformist pragmatic strategy
Hadronic production of bottom-squark pairs with electroweak contributions
We present the complete computation of the tree-level and the next-to-leading
order electroweak contributions to bottom-squark pair production at the LHC.
The computation is performed within the minimal supersymmetric extension of the
Standard Model. We discuss the numerical impact of these contributions in

Hadronic production of squark-squark pairs: The electroweak contributions
We compute the electroweak (EW) contributions to squark--squark pair
production processes at the LHC within the framework of the Minimal
Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM). Both tree-level EW contributions, of
O(alpha_s alpha + alpha^2), and next-to-leading order (NLO) EW corrections, of
O(alpha_s^2 alpha), are calculated. Depending on the flavor and chirality of
the produced quarks, many interferences between EW-mediated and QCD-mediated
diagrams give non-zero contributions at tree-level and NLO. We discuss the
computational techniques and present an extensive numerical analysis for
inclusive squark--squark production as well as for subsets and single
processes. While the tree-level EW contributions to the integrated cross
sections can reach the 20% level, the NLO EW corrections typically lower the LO
prediction by a few percent.Comment: 36 pages, 18 figure
Search for Fractional Charges Produced in Heavy-Ion Collisions at 1.9 GeV/nucleon
An experiment was performed to capture fractionally charged particles produced in heavy-ion collisions and to concentrate them in samples suitable for analysis by various techniques. Two of the samples so produced have been searched, with use of an automated version of Millikan\u27s oil-drop apparatus. The beam was 56Fe at 1.9 GeV/nucleon, incident on a lead target. Less than one fractional charge per 1.0× 104 Fe-Pb collisions was found to be produced, and, with further assumptions, less than one per 2.0× 106 collisions
Asymmetric triplex metallohelices with high and selective activity against cancer cells
Small cationic amphiphilic α-helical peptides are emerging as agents for the treatment of cancer and infection, but they are costly and display unfavourable pharmacokinetics. Helical coordination complexes may offer a three-dimensional scaffold for the synthesis of mimetic architectures. However, the high symmetry and modest functionality of current systems offer little scope to tailor the structure to interact with specific biomolecular targets, or to create libraries for phenotypic screens. Here, we report the highly stereoselective asymmetric self-assembly of very stable, functionalized metallohelices. Their anti-parallel head-to-head-to-tail ‘triplex’ strand arrangement creates an amphipathic functional topology akin to that of the active sub-units of, for example, host-defence peptides and p53. The metallohelices display high, structure-dependent toxicity to the human colon carcinoma cell-line HCT116 p53++, causing dramatic changes in the cell cycle without DNA damage. They have lower toxicity to human breast adenocarcinoma cells (MDA-MB-468) and, most remarkably, they show no significant toxicity to the bacteria methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli.

The Predominance of Hydrogen Evolution on Transition Metal Sulfides and Phosphides under CO<sub>2</sub> Reduction Conditions: An Experimental and Theoretical Study

of experiment and theory has been used to understand
the relationship between the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and
CO<sub>2</sub> reduction (CO<sub>2</sub>R) on transition metal phosphide
and transition metal sulfide catalysts. Although multifunctional active
sites in these materials could potentially improve their CO<sub>2</sub>R activity relative to pure transition metal electrocatalysts, under
aqueous testing conditions, these materials showed a high selectivity
for the HER relative to CO<sub>2</sub>R. Computational results supported
these findings, indicating that a limitation of the metal phosphide
catalysts is that the HER is favored thermodynamically over CO<sub>2</sub>R. On Ni-MoS<sub>2</sub>, a limitation is the kinetic barrier
for the proton–electron transfer to *CO. These theoretical
and experimental results demonstrate that selective CO<sub>2</sub>R requires electrocatalysts that possess both favorable thermodynamic
pathways and surmountable kinetic barriers

Phylogenetic Relationships of Monocots Based on the Highly Informative Plastid Gene ndhF
We used ndhF sequence variation to reconstruct relationships across 282 taxa representing 78 monocot families and all 12 orders. The resulting tree is highly resolved and places commelinids sister to Asparagales, with both sister to Liliales—Pandanales in the strict consensus; Pandanales are sister to Dioscoreales in the bootstrap majority-rule tree, just above Petrosaviales. Acorales are sister to all other monocots, with Alismatales sister to all but Acorales. Relationships among the four major clades of commelinids remain unresolved. Relationships within orders are consistent with those based on rbcL, alone or in combination with atpB and 18S nrDNA, and generally better supported: ndhF contributes more than twice as many informative characters as rbcL, and nearly as many as rbcL, atpB, and 18S nrDNA combined. Based on functional arguments, we hypothesized that net venation and fleshy fruits should both evolve—and thus undergo concerted convergence—in shaded habitats, and revert to parallel venation and dry, passively dispersed fruits in open, sunny habitats. Our data show that net venation arose at least 26 times and disappeared 9 times, whereas fleshy fruits arose 22 times and disappeared 11 times. Both traits arose together at least 15 times and disappeared together 5 times. They thus show a highly significant pattern of concerted convergence (P \u3c 10-9) and are each even more strongly associated with shaded habitats (P \u3c 10-10 to 10-23); net venation is also associated, as predicted, with broad-leaved aquatic plants.
