Veterans, the Flag, and Protest: Facilitating Dialogue at Jesuit Institutions

    Get PDF
Sean Hagerty, S.J., is completing his scholastic studies at Saint Louis University (SLU). Before joining the Jesuits in 2012, he served in the U.S. Army, where he was deployed to Diyala Province, Iraq, commanded a forward observer team, and served as second in command of an infantry company. After finishing his military service, Hagerty began work in the beer industry. He was a star manager when he decided to leave the corporate world and enter the Society of Jesus. During the events of Occupy SLU, an American flag was hung upside down and dragged through the mud in the center of the protestors’ encampment. In his article, Hagerty reflects on his role as a Jesuit and a veteran who participated with a group of SLU veterans, and on the group’s consideration of flag desecration, deliberating with veterans familiar with soldiers who were sent home from far-away lands with the flag draped over their coffin

The Need for Extended Time Off (EXTO): New children: More women and mothers are working, and there is an increase in the number of couples with children in which both parents work. Health issues: According to a 2000 survey of employees regarding the Family & Medical Leave Act (FMLA), among those who took FMLA leave, more than half, 52.4%, of workers used the leave to attend to their own health conditions. Thirteen percent reported taking leave to care for a parent and nearly 12% reported using leave to care for an ill child. The need for paid EXTO: Despite the availability of unpaid EXTO to those employees who are eligible under the FMLA, many workers do not use the benefit because of a lack of sufficient wage replacement during the leave

A survey of the nonphymatine reduviids of southern Illinois was conducted from April 1996 to November 1998. In addition to county distributions, information was collected on times of occurrence of adults and nymphs and associated habitats. These data were supplemented with label information associated with southern Illinois specimens housed in the Southern Illinois University Entomology Collection (SIUEC). Twenty-five species were collected during this survey. An additional six species housed in the SIUEC were collected previously in southern Illinois but not during the survey. Of the 31 species, nine are state records: Ploiaria hirticornis, Rocconota annulicornis, Sinea complexa, Microtornus purcis, Rasahus hamatus, Saica elkinsi, Oncocephalus geniculatus, Pnirontis languida, and Pnirontis modesta
