    The Diels-Alder (DA) reaction is one of the most studied thermoreversible reactions, suitable for the preparation of thermoreversible crosslinked materials. In this study, temperature- triggered liquefaction of DA hydrogels will be investigated. A DA model reaction is used to determine the retro- DA temperature of the two stereoisomers. A hydrogel based on furan-functionalized Poly-(N-(2-hydroxy-propyl) methacryl amide (PHPMA) and 4-arm-polyethylene glycol (PEG) with maleimide endgroups is rheologically investigated and liquefaction experiments are performed

    From place to emplacement: the scalar politics of sustainability

    Sustainability has emerged as a central concept for discussing the current state of the human-environment system and planning for its future. To delve into the depths of sustainability means to talk about ecology, economy, and equity as fundamentally interconnected. However, each continues to be colonised by normative epistemologies of ecological sciences, neoclassical economics, and development, suggesting that with enough science and development, a more equitable sustainability is achievable. In our analysis, place emerges as an alternative epistemology through which to analyze sustainability. Place exists at multiple spatial and temporal scales, understood through direct observation of boundaries, processes and patterns, phenomenologically through individual experience, and as a complex hybrid: always emerging through interactions among individuals and institutions. Despite the ubiquity of place in the socio-ecological literature, the complexity of place in relation to sustainability is under-theorised, and in as much as sustainability happens or does not happen in real places rather than in policies and models, a place-based sustainability framework is necessary to move forward. To address this gap, we developed the emplacement framework, consisting of four domains: displacement, misplacement, replacement, and emplacement. Each domain is dynamic, constructing place as praxis, and reframing sustainability as a site of collective inquiry and choices. Our goal is to facilitate the active and on-going practices of place-based research and engagement among scholars, activists, and other community members by providing a structure for transdisciplinary dialogue and the application of transdisciplinary research to enable better decision-making

    In-laboratory breast specimen radiography reduces tissue block utilization and improves turnaround time of pathologic examination

    BACKGROUND: This study was performed to determine whether in-laboratory specimen radiography reduces turnaround time or block utilization in surgical pathology. METHODS: Specimens processed during a 48-day trial of an in-lab cabinet radiography device (Faxitron) were compared to a control group of specimens imaged in the mammography suite during a prior 1-year period, and to a second group of specimens not undergoing imaging of any type. RESULTS: Cases imaged in the mammography suite had longer turnaround time than cases not requiring imaging (by 1.15 days for core biopsies, and 1.73 days for mastectomies; p \u3c 0.0001). In contrast, cases imaged in-lab had turnaround time that was no longer than unimaged cases (p \u3e 0.05 for core biopsies, lumpectomies and mastectomies). Mastectomies imaged in-lab required submission of fewer blocks than controls not undergoing any imaging (mean reduction of 10.6 blocks). CONCLUSIONS: Availability of in-lab radiography resulted in clinically meaningful improvements in turnaround time and economically meaningful reductions in block utilization

A nanocomposite consisting of superparamagnetic core-shell nanoparticles (CSNPs) and a synthetic polymer is supposed to be used as implant coating, aiming for a stimulus-inducible modification of the composite's rheological properties by hyperthermia.     AXL modulates extracellular matrix protein expression and is essential for invasion and metastasis in endometrial cancer

    The receptor tyrosine kinase AXL promotes migration, invasion, and metastasis. Here, we evaluated the role of AXL in endometrial cancer. High immunohistochemical expression of AXL was found in 76% (63/83) of advanced-stage, and 77% (82/107) of high-grade specimens and correlated with worse survival in uterine serous cancer patients. In vitro, genetic silencing of AXL inhibited migration and invasion but had no effect on proliferation of ARK1 endometrial cancer cells. AXL-deficient cells showed significantly decreased expression of phospho-AKT as well as uPA, MMP-1, MMP-2, MMP-3, and MMP-9. In a xenograft model of human uterine serous carcinoma with AXL-deficient ARK1 cells, there was significantly less tumor burden than xenografts with control ARK1 cells. Together, these findings underscore the therapeutic potentials of AXL as a candidate target for treatment of metastatic endometrial cancer

    Testing the effect of individual scent compounds on pollinator attraction in nature using quasi-isogenic Capsella lines

    Premise Floral scent, usually consisting of multiple compounds, is a complex trait, and its role in pollinator attraction has received increasing attention. However, disentangling the effect of individual floral scent compounds is difficult due to the complexity of isolating the effect of single compounds by traditional methods. Methods Using available quasi-isogenic lines (qILs) that were generated as part of the original mapping of the floral scent volatile-related loci CNL1 (benzaldehyde) and TPS2 (β-ocimene) in Capsella, we generated four genotypes that should only differ in these two compounds. Plants of the four genotypes were introduced into a common garden outside the natural range of C. rubella or C. grandiflora, with individuals of a self-compatible C. grandiflora line as pollen donors, whose different genetic background facilitates the detection of outcrossing events. Visitors to flowers of all five genotypes were compared, and the seeds set during the common-garden period were collected for high-throughput amplicon-based sequencing to estimate their outcrossing rates. Results Benzaldehyde and β-ocimene emissions were detected in the floral scent of corresponding genotypes. While some pollinator groups showed specific visitation preferences depending on scent compounds, the outcrossing rates in seeds did not vary among the four scent-manipulated genotypes. Conclusions The scent-manipulated Capsella materials constructed using qILs provide a powerful system to study the ecological effects of individual floral scent compounds under largely natural environments.     First feed matters: The first diet of larval fish programmes growth, survival, and metabolism of larval ballan wrasse (Labrus bergylta)

    The use of cleaner fish, such as the ballan wrasse (Labrus bergylta), is important for combatting the sea lice problem in salmonid cage farming. Ballan wrasse is the only wrasse species that is cultivated, though only about 50% of the approx. 3 million ballan wrasse used in 2020 was produced by aquaculture. The major obstacle for large scale cultivation of ballan wrasse is the difficult first feeding phase and a lack of functional feeding protocols. Like most pelagic marine fish larvae, ballan wrasse do not accept inert diets as first feed, and feeding regimes based on rotifers and Artemia (brine shrimps) usually lead to mixed results and are far from being optimal nutrition for the larvae. In a 48-day start feeding experiment, we studied the feasibility of replacing rotifers by an Experimental cirriped diet or copepod nauplii (Acartia tonsa) and replacing Artemia by nauplii of the cirriped Semibalanus balanoides. Later, all treatments received the same formulated diets. We sampled larvae at each feed transition to analyze different response variables such as growth, morphometry, gene expression, lipidomics, histology, and microbiology. We found significant differences in survival rates and growth. Larvae fed copepods as the first diet had significantly higher survival rates than larvae start-fed on either rotifers or small experimental cirripeds, and this pattern was also reflected in early growth and bone development. Gut histology at the end of the experiment (48 days after hatching) showed a more developed intestinal tissue in the larval group fed copepods first and cirripeds as the second diet compared to the other larval groups. Gene expression at day 48 post hatch still revealed pronounced differences between the larval group first fed on rotifers and larvae from the other three feeding regimes which received natural, unenriched diets. Even weeks after receiving the same formulated diets, lipidomics analyses revealed that several lipid species correlated either negatively or positively with larval growth rates or mortality. Our results are a clear indication for nutritional programming, pointing towards the importance the first diet has for the further life of a fish.publishedVersio

    Arctic Seafloor Integrity Cruise No. MSM95 – (GPF 19-2_05)

    The main aim of the MSM95 research expedition was to investigate and map physical impacts on the arctic seafloor in two distinct and contrasting Arctic areas (The Svalbard shelf edge and the HAUSGARTEN time series stations in the FRAM strait) with a range of research equipment. A ‘nested’ data approach was conducted in each research area, with broad seafloor mapping conducted initially with the R/V MARIA S. MERIAN onboard acoustic systems (The EM122 and EM712 bathymetric systems), followed by focused subsequent mapping conducted by PAUL 3000 automated underwater vehicle (AUV) sidescan and camera deployments, Ocean Floor Observation and Bathymetry System (OFOBS) towed sidescan and camera trawls and finally with very high resolution investigations conducted with a new mini-ROV launched directly from the OFOBS for close seafloor visual analysis. These data will be used to produce spatial distribution maps of iceberg and fishery impacts on the seafloor at three locations to the north, south and west of the Svalbard Archipelago, as well as maps of drop stone and topography variations across several of the HAUSGARTEN stations
