    Classical Analogue of the Ionic Hubbard Model

    In our earlier work [M. Hafez, {\em et al.}, Phys. Lett. A {\bf 373} (2009) 4479] we employed the flow equation method to obtain a classic effective model from a quantum mechanical parent Hamiltonian called, the ionic Hubbard model (IHM). The classical ionic Hubbard model (CIHM) obtained in this way contains solely Fermionic occupation numbers of two species corresponding to particles with \up and \down spin, respectively. In this paper, we employ the transfer matrix method to analytically solve the CIHM at finite temperature in one dimension. In the limit of zero temperature, we find two insulating phases at large and small Coulomb interaction strength, UU, mediated with a gap-less metallic phase, resulting in two continuous metal-insulator transitions. Our results are further supported with Monte Carlo simulations.Comment: 12 figure

    The Behaviour of Swine

    The pig was a forest-dwelling animal from the beginning of its history. In some parts of the world it has been domesticated for at least 7000 years. The European breeds of domestic swine were derived from the local wild pig, Sus scrofa. Herds ranged in pastures and forests and kept indoors only for fattening. The breeds in the Far East were derived from another wild pig, Sus vittatus, a smaller animal with shorter legs and a higher reproductive ability (Mohr 1960; Zeuner 1963). The two types interbred readily. The modem breeds of pig evolved from different crossings between the two original types. They form a rich diversity of genetic material and more than 200 breeds have been catalogued. Certain wild types of pig-like animals, such as the African bush pig (Pontamochoerus larvatus) and the wart hog (Phacochoerus aethiopecus), have never been domesticated. The basis of the social structure in feral swine is the matriarchal herd: one or several females with their offspring. The males are not permanently associated to such herds, often ranging solitary or in \u27bachelor\u27 groups (Fig. 52). Under domestication the pig has been modified from a pugnacious, free-ranging, foraging beast to a more docile animal which is handled readily in large groups under conditions of confined rearing. The behavioural plasticity of swine is emphasized by the rapidity with which wild pigs have adapted to rearing in restricted conditions. Although most of our knowledge of the behaviour of swine has been gained from data collected incidentally to research on nutrition, breeding, physiology and management, a number of experimental studies have recently appeared in learning, adaptation, social, sexual and maternal behaviours, making the pig the best known species among domestic mammals, from the point of view of behaviour

    Preventive effect of the flavonoid, quercetin, on hepatic cancer in rats via oxidant/antioxidant activity: molecular and histological evidences

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The incidence of hepatocellular carcinoma is increasing in many countries. The estimated number of new cases annually is over 500,000, and the yearly incidence comprises between 2.5 and 7% of patients with liver cirrhosis. The incidence varies between different geographic areas, being higher in developing areas; males are predominantly affected, with a 2:3 male/female ratio</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Experiments were designed to examine the effect of <it>N</it>-Nitrosodiethylamine (NDEA) as cancer-inducer compound and to confirm the preventive effect of the flavonoid quercetin on hepatocellular carcinoma in rats. Briefly, thirty six male albino rats of Wistar strain were divided into 3 groups: the 1<sup>st </sup>group was administered NDEA alone (NDEA-treated), the 2<sup>nd </sup>group was treated simultaneously with NDEA and quercetin (NDEA+Q) and the 3<sup>rd </sup>group was used as control (CON). Randomly amplified polymorphic DNA polymerase chain reaction (RAPD-PCR) as well as <it>p53</it>-specifi PCR assays were employed to determine genomic difference between treated, and control animals. Histological confirmation as well as oxidant/antioxidant status of the liver tissue was done.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>RAPD analysis of liver samples generated 8 monomorphic bands and 22 polymorphic bands in a total of 30-banded RAPD patterns. Cluster analysis and statistical analyses of RAPD data resulted in grouping control and NDEA+Q samples in the same group with 80% similarity cut-off value. NDEA-treated samples were clustered in a separate group. Specific PCR assay for polymorphism of <it>P</it><sup>53 </sup>gene revealed a uniform pattern of allele separation in both control and NDEA+Q samples. Quercetin anticancer effect was exhibited in significant decrease of oxidative stress and significant decrease of antioxidant activity. Histopathological studies showed normal liver histology of the NDEA+Q samples. Meanwhile, several cancer-induced features were clearly observable in NDEA-treated samples.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>This paper demonstrated that preventive effect of quercetin on hepatocarcinoma in rats by RAPD-PCR, tracing the effect on <it>p53 </it>gene and by histopathological evidence. Hereby, it was proved that quercetin exerted its preventive effect via decreased oxidative stress and decreased antioxidant activity.</p

    Design, Synthesis, Molecular Docking, Antiapoptotic and Caspase-3 Inhibition of New 1,2,3-Triazole/Bis-2(1H)-Quinolinone Hybrids

    A series of novel 1,2,3-triazoles hybridized with two quinolin-2-ones, was designed and synthesized through click reactions. The structures of the synthesized compounds were elucidated by NMR, IR, and mass spectra in addition to elemental analysis. The synthesized compounds were assessed for their antiapoptotic activity in testis, as testicular torsion is the main cause of male infertility. This effect was studied in light of decreasing tissue damage induced by I/R in the testis of rats using N-acetylcysteine (NAC) as an antiapoptotic reference. Compounds 6a–c were the most active antiapoptotic hybrids with significant measurements for malondialdehyde (MDA) and total antioxidant capacity (TAC) and the apoptotic biomarkers (testicular testosterone, TNFα, and caspase-3) in comparison to the reference. A preliminary mechanistic study was performed to improve the antiapoptotic activity through caspase-3 inhibition. A compound assigned as 6-methoxy-4-(4-(((2-oxo-1,2-dihydroquinolin-4-yl)oxy)methyl)-1H-1,2,3-triazol-1-yl)quinolin-2(1H)-one (6c) was selected as a representative of the most active hybrids in comparison to NAC. Assay of cytochrome C for 6c revealed an attenuation of cytochrome C level about 3.54 fold, comparable to NAC (4.13 fold). In caspases-3,8,9 assays, 6c was found to exhibit more potency and selectivity toward caspase-3 than other caspases. The testicular histopathological investigation was carried out on all targeted compounds 6a–g, indicating a significant improvement in the spermatogenesis process for compounds 6a–c if compared to the reference relative to the control. Finally, molecular docking studies were done at the caspase-3 active site to suggest possible binding modes. Hence, it could conceivably be hypothesized that compounds 6a–c could be considered good lead candidate compounds as antiapoptotic agents

    Prevalence rate of Klebsiella pneumoniae in the intensive care unit: epidemiology and molecular characteristics

    Klebsiella pneumoniae carbapenemase producing bacteria are defined as a group of Gramnegative bacilli that are highly resistant to drugs. The resistance of pathogens of the Enterobacteriaceae family to β-lactam antibiotics such as carbapenems is considered a major threat in the medical field. The main aim of the current study was to explore and confirm the occurrence of carbapenemase producing K. pneumoniae in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) in different hospital environment sample sites of two Egyptian hospitals in Cairo. Isolates were collected and the screening criteria of carbapenemase producing bacteria was followed by the investigators in order to record the antimicrobial resistance patterns of all isolates in addition to the molecular identification using the 16S rDNA. This study determined the sites responsible for the spreading of carbapenem-resistant K. pneumoniae including suction tubes, ventilator tubes, instrument tables and beds. All K. pneumoniae isolates collected from the ICU of both hospitals were resistant to oxacillin, meropenem and ceftazidime. Moreover, 16S rDNA gene sequence was used to study bacterial phylogeny and taxonomy for all K. pneumoniae isolates; the accession number of all isolates is reported. We concluded that infection control department policies in each hospital should be reinforced to avoid the escalation of K. pneumoniae as nosocomial infections in hospitals. This study should be repeated in other hospitals (especially the public hospitals) to assess the level of the problem

    Partial Purification and Characterization of Two Endo-ȕ-1, 4-glucanase from Trichoderma sp. (Shmosa tri)

    Abstract: Two endoglucanases (EC 3.2.1.4) from Trichoderma sp. (shmosaTri) FJ937359 were purified to homogeneity using ammonium sulfate precipitation and gel filtration. Purity was confirmed by SDS/PAGE. Enzymatic properties and molecular weights were determined. Molecular weights of CMCase I and II were 58 and 34 KDa, respectively. The effect of temperature on the 2 endoglucanase activity was studied and results showed that optimum activity obtained at 50°C for both CMCase I and II. The enzymes withstand 60 min at 50ºC without loss of enzymatic activity. CMCase I and II retained 14.0 and 26.5 % of their original activities at 70°C after 90 min. The optimum pH for CMCase I and II was 5.0. Results also show that CMCase I was active at room temperature after 24 hrs over a broad pH range (3.0-9.0) while CMCase II was relatively stable in pH range (4.0-6.0). Among different kinds of substrates, both enzymes showed a high preference for carboxymethyl cellulose while both CMCase I and II did not show any hydrolytic activity against chitin, starch and cellobiose. On the other hand both CMCase I and II have relatively low hydrolytic activity towards ȕ glucan and xylan. All metallic ions used as well as EDTA and SDS at a concentration of 20 ug/ml of reaction mixture have an inhibitory effect on both CMCase I and II

    The C-Band All-Sky Survey: Instrument design, status, and first-look data

    The C-Band All-Sky Survey (C-BASS) aims to produce sensitive, all-sky maps of diffuse Galactic emission at 5 GHz in total intensity and linear polarization. These maps will be used (with other surveys) to separate the several astrophysical components contributing to microwave emission, and in particular will allow an accurate map of synchrotron emission to be produced for the subtraction of foregrounds from measurements of the polarized Cosmic Microwave Background.     Nonlinear Jaynes-Cummings model of atom-field interaction

    Interaction of a two-level atom with a single mode of electromagnetic field including Kerr nonlinearity for the field and intensity-dependent atom-field coupling is discussed. The Hamiltonian for the atom-field system is written in terms of the elements of a closed algebra, which has SU(1,1) and Heisenberg-Weyl algebras as limiting cases. Eigenstates and eigenvalues of the Hamiltonian are constructed. With the field being in a coherent state initially, the dynamical behaviour of atomic-inversion, field-statistics and uncertainties in the field quadratures are studied.
