    Human Factors Operability Timeline Analysis to Improve the Processing Flow of the Orion Spacecraft

    The Constellation Program (CxP) Orion vehicle goes through several areas and stages of processing before its launched at the Kennedy Space Center. In order to have efficient and effective processing, all of the activities need to be analyzed. This was accomplished by first developing a timeline of events that included each activity, and then each activity was analyzed by operability experts and human factors experts with spacecraft processing experience. This papers focus is to explain the results and the process for developing this human factors operability timeline analysis to improve the processing flow of Orion

    Robust estimation of bacterial cell count from optical density

    Optical density (OD) is widely used to estimate the density of cells in liquid culture, but cannot be compared between instruments without a standardized calibration protocol and is challenging to relate to actual cell count. We address this with an interlaboratory study comparing three simple, low-cost, and highly accessible OD calibration protocols across 244 laboratories, applied to eight strains of constitutive GFP-expressing E. coli. Based on our results, we recommend calibrating OD to estimated cell count using serial dilution of silica microspheres, which produces highly precise calibration (95.5% of residuals <1.2-fold), is easily assessed for quality control, also assesses instrument effective linear range, and can be combined with fluorescence calibration to obtain units of Molecules of Equivalent Fluorescein (MEFL) per cell, allowing direct comparison and data fusion with flow cytometry measurements: in our study, fluorescence per cell measurements showed only a 1.07-fold mean difference between plate reader and flow cytometry data

    Dynamics of agriculture subject guides access at Kansas State University Libraries

    The Internet has profoundly altered the way library users access information. Academic libraries have responded by creating library instruction tools and subject guides as web pages. Much effort has been invested in the development of web-based library guides. It has thus become increasingly important to study the level of subject guide access. Library website usage including subject guides access, forms a valuable output measure in contemporary library service evaluation. Accordingly, this study uses server statistics to analyze subject guide access in an academic science library. The potential use of this study is discussed

    Kansas Wildflowers and Grasses

    This great online field guide for the wildflowers and grasses of Kansas was created by Professor Mike Haddock, Science Libraries Web Coordinator and Agriculture Librarian at Kansas State University. The site utilizes "more than 1600 identification photos for some 380 species of forbs, grasses, sedges, rushes, and woody plants that are found growing in Kansas." Professor Haddock's well-organized site offers sections that list plants by common and scientific name, grasses and wildflowers by time of flowering, and wildflowers by color. There are also separate sections for the grasses, the sedge and rush families, and drawings that depict morphological features of different plants. The site photos are excellent and the accompanying information is clear and concise. A bibliography, glossary, and list of related links are included as well
