    Time-resolved velocity map imaging of methyl elimination from photoexcited anisole

    To date, H-atom elimination from heteroaromatic molecules following UV excitation has been extensively studied, with the focus on key biological molecules such as chromophores of DNA bases and amino acids. Extending these studies to look at elimination of other non-hydride photoproducts is essential in creating a more complete picture of the photochemistry of these biomolecules in the gas-phase. To this effect, CH3 elimination in anisole has been studied using time resolved velocity map imaging (TR-VMI) for the first time, providing both time and energy information on the dynamics following photoexcitation at 200 nm. The extra dimension of energy afforded by these measurements has enabled us to address the role of πσ* states in the excited state dynamics of anisole as compared to the hydride counterpart (phenol), providing strong evidence to suggest that only CH3 fragments eliminated with high kinetic energy are due to direct dissociation involving a 1πσ* state. These measurements also suggest that indirect mechanisms such as statistical unimolecular decay could be contributing to the dynamics at much longer times

    Synthesis and Evaluation of Radamide Analogues, A Chimera of Radicicol and Geldanamycin

    Previously, we reported the Hsp90 inhibitory activity of radamide, an open chain amide chimera of geldanamycin and radicicol. Attempts to further expand upon structure–activity relationships for this class of Hsp90 inhibitors led to the preparation of a series of radamide analogues focused on differing tether lengths and quinone mimics. In addition, the cup-shaped conformation adopted by the two natural products when bound to the Hsp90 N-terminal ATP binding pocket suggests that conformationally biased compounds may demonstrate improved binding and inhibition. The preparation and evaluation of radamide analogues with cis/trans α,β-unsaturated amides yielded compounds that exhibit improved antiproliferative activity. In addition, several analogues demonstrated the ability to induce degradation of Hsp90-dependent oncogenic signaling proteins in vitro, a hallmark of Hsp90 N-terminal inhibition

    Audit Committees Oversight of Information Technology Risk

    This exploratory study examines the role of the audit committee in overseeing information technology (IT) risk. We address the degree of audit committee oversight of specific IT risks, as well as factors associated with variations in audit committee IT oversight. Based on responses from 39 audit committee members, we found (1) little audit committee emphasis on oversight of IT risks, (2) audit committees involved with IT oversight focus on more traditional risks (e.g., monitoring), while very little attention is devoted to IT acquisition and implementation, and (3) the amount of IT oversight is positively associated with the responding members auditing experience and prior familiarity with the COBIT model for assessing IT risks. Audit committee independence, diligence, and expertise, company size, and industry were not significantly associated with IT oversight

    Ignition and Flashover of Reduced Scale Compartments with Timber Ceilings

    Experiments on reduced-scale compartments with timber ceilings and floors were conducted to investigate the ignition of the ceiling and growth to flashover. Pool fires of various sizes were ignited and measurements were made of temperature in the plume and ceiling jet, and mass of the timber ceiling and floor. The compartment geometry was also systematically varied. The results showed that ignition of the ceiling occurred when the measured temperature at ceiling level was between 328°C and 347°C. This aligned with intermittent flame impingement on the ceiling from the initiating fire. Following ignition of the ceiling, in most cases the fire subsequently spread across the ceiling resulting, ultimately, in ignition of the floor. It was found that duration of preheating of the ceiling (by the ceiling jet) strongly influenced flame spread. In some cases, ignition occurred, but did not result in continuous flame spread across the ceiling – in these cases it was found that the ceiling jet was cooler due to wider geometry of the compartment. The data were compared against existing correlations from the literature, and it was found that existing methods may be used to predict whether ignition of the ceiling may occur and the conditions for flashover
