    Subduction-zone structure and magmatic processes beneath Costa Rica constrained by local earthquake tomography and petrological modelling

    A high-quality data set of 3790 earthquakes were simultaneously inverted for hypocentre locations and 3-D P-wave velocities in Costa Rica. Tests with synthetic data and resolution estimates derived from the resolution matrix indicate that the velocity model is well constrained in central Costa Rica to a depth of 70 km; northwestern and southeastern Costa Rica are less well resolved owing to a lack of seismic stations and seismicity. Maximum H2O content and seismic wave speeds of mid-ocean ridge basalt and harzburgite were calculated for metamorphic phase transformations relevant to subduction. Both the 3-D P-wave velocity structure and petrological modelling indicate the existence of low-velocity hydrous oceanic crust in the subducting Cocos Plate beneath central Costa Rica. Intermediate-depth seismicity correlates well with the predicted locations of hydrous metamorphic rocks, suggesting that dehydration plays a key role in generating intermediate-depth earthquakes beneath Costa Rica. Wadati-Benioff zone seismicity beneath central Costa Rica shows a remarkable decrease in maximum depth toward southeastern Costa Rica. The presence of asthenosphere beneath southeastern Costa Rica, which entered through a proposed slab window, may explain the shallowing of seismicity due to increased temperatures and associated shallowing of dehydration of the slab. Tomographic images further constrain the existence of deeply subducted seamounts beneath central Costa Rica. Large, low P-wave velocity areas within the lower crust are imaged beneath the southeasternmost volcanoes in central Costa Rica. These low velocities may represent anomalously hot material or even melt associated with active volcanism in central Costa Rica.     A 10 GHz Quasi-Optical Grid Amplifier Using Integrated HBT Differential Pairs

    We report the fabrication and testing of a 10 GHz grid amplifier utilizing sixteen GaAs chips each containing an HBT differential pair plus integral bias/feedback resistors. The overall amplifier consists of a 4x4 array of unit cells on an RT Duroidℱ board having a relative permittivity of 2.2. Each unit cell consists of an emitter-coupled differential pair at the center, an input antenna which extends horizontally in both directions from the two base leads, an output antenna which extends vertically in both directions from the two collector leads, and high inductance bias lines. In operation, the active grid array is placed between a pair of crossed polarizers. The horizontally polarized input wave passes through the input polarizer and couples to the input leads. An amplified current then flows on the vertical leads, which radiate a vertically polarized amplified signal through the output polarizer. The polarizers serve dual functions, providing both input-output isolation as well as independent impedance matching for the input and output ports. The grid thus functions essentially as a free-space beam amplifier. Calculations indicate that output powers of several watts per square centimeter of grid area should be attainable with optimized structures

    A 100-element HBT grid amplifier

    A 100-element 10-GHz grid amplifier has been developed. The active devices in the grid are chips with heterojunction-bipolar-transistor (HBT) differential pairs. The metal grid pattern was empirically designed to provide effective coupling between the HBTs and free space. Two independent measurements, one with focusing lenses and the other without, were used to characterize the grid. In each case, the peak gain was 10 dB at 10 GHz with a 3-dB bandwidth of 1 GHz. The input and output return losses were better than 15 dB at 10 GHz. The maximum output power was 450 mW, and the minimum noise figure was 7 dB. By varying the bias, a signal could be amplitude modulated with a modulation index as large as 0.65. Tests show that the grid was quite tolerant of failures-the output power dropped by only 1 dB when 10% of the inputs were detuned. The grid amplifier is a multimode device that amplifies beams of different shapes and angles. Beams with incidence angles up to 30° were amplified with less than a 3-dB drop in gain

    Inferring the Oriented Elastic Tensor from Surface Wave Observations: Preliminary Application Across the Western United States

    Radial and azimuthal anisotropy in seismic wave speeds have long been observed using surface waves and are believed to be controlled by deformation within the Earth’s crust and uppermost mantle. Although radial and azimuthal anisotropy reflect important aspects of anisotropic media, few studies have tried to interpret them jointly. We describe a method of inversion that interprets simultaneous observations of radial and azimuthal anisotropy under the assumption of a hexagonally symmetric elastic tensor with a tilted symmetry axis defined by dip and strike angles. We show that observations of radial anisotropy and the 2ψ component of azimuthal anisotropy for Rayleigh waves obtained using USArray data in the western United States can be fit well under this assumption. Our inferences occur within the framework of a Bayesian Monte Carlo inversion, which yields a posterior distribution that reflects both variances of and covariances between all model variables, and divide into theoretical and observational results. Principal theoretical results include the following: (1) There are two distinct groups of models (Group 1, Group 2) in the posterior distribution in which the strike angle of anisotropy in the crust (defined by the intersection of the foliation plane with Earth’s surface) is approximately orthogonal between the two sets. (2) The Rayleigh wave fast axis directions are orthogonal to the strike angle in the geologically preferred group of models in which anisotropy is strongly non-elliptical. (3) The estimated dip angle may be interpreted in two ways: as a measure of the actual dip of the foliation of anisotropic material within the crust, or as a proxy for another non-geometric variable, most likely a measure of the deviation from hexagonal symmetry of the medium. The principal observational results include the following: (1) Inherent S-wave anisotropy (Îł ) is fairly homogeneous vertically across the crust, on average, and spatially across the western United States. (2) Averaging over the region of study and in depth, Îł in the crust is approximately 4.1 ± 2 per cent. Îł in the crust is approximately the same in the two groups of models. (3) Dip angles in the two groups of models show similar spatial variability and display geological coherence. (4) Tilting the symmetry axis of an anisotropic medium produces apparent radial and apparent azimuthal anisotropies that are both smaller in amplitude than the inherent anisotropy of the medium, which means that most previous studies have probably underestimated the strength of anisotropy
