    Détection de l'adultération du beurre par la margarine

    Une méthode analytique permettant de détecter l’adultération du beurre par la margarine a été développée. Elle est basée sur la détermination de la composition en acides gras et en stérols par chromatographie en phase gazeuse. Plusieurs niveaux d’adultération du beurre par la margarine (3, 5 et 10% p/p) ont été préparés puis analysés. Les résultats montrent que l’acide linoléique et les stérols permettent de détecter la margarine dans le beurre à un seuil de 3%

    A low-order unstructured-mesh approach for computational electromagnetics in the time domain

    Maxwell's curl equations in the time domain are solved using an explicit linear finite-element approach implemented on unstructured tetrahedral meshes. For the simulation of scattering problems, a perfectly matched layer is added at the artificial far-field boundary, created by the truncation of the physical domain prior to the numerical solution. The complete solution procedure is parallelized. The computational challenges that are encountered when attempting simulations at higher frequencies suggest that the implementation of a hybrid algorithm could have certain advantages. The hybrid approach adopted uses a combination of the finite-element procedure and the well-known low operation count/low storage finite-difference timedomain method. Examples are included to demonstrate the numerical performance of the techniques that are described

    Does franchising create value? An analysis of the financial performance of US public restaurant firms

    Author's OriginalIt is commonly believed that the franchising method of distribution provides strategic and operational benefits to the companies that adopt it. These benefits should result in superior financial performance as compared to that of firms that do not use franchising. Yet, the empirical evidence of the effects of franchising on financial performance is sparse and mixed. The purpose of this paper is to further examine the empirical evidence of the impact of franchising on a firm’s financial performance by using performance metrics (Economic Value Added and Market Value Added) that are extensively used in corporate finance. This study focuses on the US public restaurant sector. The results provide some evidence that franchising firms create more market and economic value than do non-franchising firms.     Spontaneous mirror symmetry breaking in the limited enantioselective autocatalysis model: abyssal hydrotermal vents as scenario for the emergence of chirality in prebiotic chemistry

    The emergence of chirality in enantioselective autocatalysis for compounds unable to transform according to the Frank-like reaction network is discussed with respect to the controversial limited enantioselectivity (LES) model composed of coupled enantioselective and non-enantioselective autocatalyses. The LES model cannot lead to spontaneous mirror symmetry breaking (SMSB) either in closed systems with a homogeneous temperature distribution or in closed systems with a stationary non-uniform temperature distribution. However, simulations of chemical kinetics in a two-compartment model demonstrate that SMSB may occur if both autocatalytic reactions are spatially separated at different temperatures in different compartments but coupled under the action of a continuous internal flow. In such conditions, the system can evolve, for certain reaction and system parameters, toward a chiral stationary state; that is, the system is able to reach a bifurcation point leading to SMSB. Numerical simulations in which reasonable chemical parameters have been used suggest that an ade- quate scenario for such a SMSB would be that of abyssal hydrothermal vents, by virtue of the typical temper- ature gradients found there and the role of inorganic solids mediating chemical reactions in an enzyme-like role.
