The Most Important Thing You Need to Know about Parenting

    Get PDF
Parenting style—the big picture of child rearing—is described by two main aspects of the parent-child relationship: support and control. Support is our responsiveness to the child’s needs; control deals with how much power we wield over them. The way parents support and control their children affects the atmosphere of the home and the emotional tone of family interaction, which influences everything else that happens in the family

Problem. During the last ten years there has been a surge of Interest among college students in short-term volunteer missionary service. It was the purpose of the present study to describe the personality, attitudes, and overseas experience of a group of 150 Seventh-day Adventist college students who served as short-term volunteer missionaries (student missionaries) during the 1975-76 school year. Method The Sixteen Personality Factor Questionnaire (Form A), a series of semantic differential rating scales for selected religious, mission, cultural, and personal concepts, and a two-part questlonnaire were used to describe the personality, attitudes, and overseas experience of the student missionaries. Cattell\u27s Coefficient of Pattern Similarity (rp) was used to compare the preservice and postservice personality and attitude profiles of the student missionaries and the profiles of different subgroups within the population. The data from the questionnaire were analyzed using percentage comparisons. Results. Among the most Important results obtained were indications of significant relationships between the personality of the student missionaries and the college students on which the testing instrument was normed (rp = +.370 at p \u3c .03); the preservice and postservice personality profiles (rp * +.899 at p ^ .01); the preservice and postservice attitude profiles (rp * -.293 at p ^ .05); and the attitude profiles of student missionary returnees who had served at language schools and those who served at other locations (rp * -.374 at p ^ .01). All concepts were rated positively, with the religious ones receiving the highest ratings and the cultural ones the lowest. Ratings of the self (Me) showed no significant difference between appointees and returnees. The most distinguishing personality characteristic of the group was their high rating on self-control. Former student missionaries played the most influential role in encouraging these students to serve overseas. Over half of the group served in the Far East and most served for ten to twelve months. Teaching was the main work responsibility of three-fourths of the group. Most of the student missionaries worked with nationals almost all of the time. The majority were happy with their opportunities for witnessing while overseas. The student missionaries felt that one of their most important contributions while overseas was their personal relationships with students. The group felt that orientation procedures needed Improvement. Several areas of personal adjustment while in the field and upon returning to North America were identified. Most of the student missionaries felt that they had experienced growth toward personal maturity and their personal religious experience had been strengthened while serving as a student missionary. The majority felt that their work was a definite contribution to the field. Over 80 percent of the returnees indicated that they were considering overseas mission service for a lifework. Conclusions. The personality of the student missionaries represented a normal distribution of traits somewhat as might be expected from a group of college students. Their one distinguishing characteristic was high self-control. The basic personality structure and the self-concept appeared to remain stable during the overseas experience. The subjects went to the field and returned with very favorable attitudes toward missions. One of the strengths of the student missionary appears to be his ability to relate on a personal level with nationals in the country where he serves. Student missionary service seems to have strengthened religious commitment, aided growth toward personal maturity, and encouraged the participants to make a commitment to lifetime missionary service

Mapping of the energetically lowest exciton in bulk 1T1T-HfS2_2

By combining electron energy-loss spectroscopy and state-of-the-art computational methods, we were able to provide an extensive picture of the excitonic processes in 1T1T-HfS2_2. The results differ significantly from the properties of the more scrutinized group VI semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides such as MoS2_2 and WSe2_2. The measurements revealed a parabolic exciton dispersion for finite momentum q\textbf{q} parallel to the Γ\GammaK direction which allowed the determination of the effective exciton mass. The dispersion decreases monotonically for momentum exchanges parallel to the Γ\GammaM high symmetry line. To gain further insight into the excitation mechanisms, we solved the ab-initio Bethe-Salpeter equation for the system. The results matched the experimental loss spectra closely, thereby confirming the excitonic nature of the observed transitions, and produced the momentumdependent binding energies. The simulations also demonstrated that the excitonic transitions for q\textbf{q} || Γ\GammaM occur exactly along that particular high symmetry line. For q\textbf{q} || Γ\GammaK on the other hand, the excitations traverse the Brillouin zone crossing various high symmetry lines. A particular interesting aspect of our findings was that the calculation of the electron probability density revealed that the exciton assumes a six-pointed star-like shape along the real space crystal planes indicating a mixed Frenkel-Wannier character.Comment: 12 pages, 10 figure

A study of the influence of shock waves on the stability of rock-bolt anchorage

An experimental method was developed to compare strain data for rock and rock bolts when exposed to shock waves released by blasting. During a 32-day period of experimentation, one rock sensor and four rock-bolt sensors were observed simultaneously. By their placement in the side wall of a structurally stable drift, secondary static stresses were excluded. Bolt gage responses, then, could be considered to originate only from a decay of anchorage stability during static conditions or as a reaction to the vibrations. Interpretation of test results indicated a distinct loss in bolt-strain during vibrations, accompanied by a smaller but steady loss of bolt-strain during static conditions. The strain losses were found related to the shock-source distance, the vibrational amplitudes in rock and bolts, and to the relative magnitude of vibrational energy in the two media --Abstract, page ii

COVID-19 infection and treatment-resistant cocaine-induced pyoderma gangrenosum: A case report

Introduction Pyoderma gangrenosum (PG) is a rare neutrophilic dermatosis of non-infectious etiology. Cocaine-induced PG (CIPG) is a documented clinical variant. Case presentation We report an exceptional case of cocaine-induced PG flare unresponsive to conventional treatment in the context of positive COVID status. A 41year-old male with past medical history of recent COVID infection, pyoderma gangrenosum and chronic cocaine abuse presented with acutely worsening multifocal ulcerations covering multiple limbs approximately 30% body surface area (BSA) one day after cocaine use. After hospitalization for ten days with no improvement in cutaneous symptoms, he was transferred to a burn center for disease control with biologics. Discussion The previous temporal relationship between disease outbreak and cocaine consumption and improvement after its discontinuation no longer remained in the setting of COVID positive status. This is the first case in literature of extensive and treatment-refractory PG in a COVID-positive patient with recent cocaine use. Conclusion This case highlights the importance of further investigation on the connection between COVID infection and PG and the need for establishing treatment guidelines for PG
