Calibration of Grassholme Channels, 1982
Adjustment of experimental channels to give any specified pattern of water depth or velocity is complex and tedious because it involves a number of variables. Since some variables are not controllable and variables may interact, valve settings of the Grassholme channels were initially determined on an ad hoc basis to suit individual experiments. This method was used during 1982 but additional observations were made in order to gain more detailed understanding of the channel system and, as far as possible, to develop a guide to future short-cuts in attaining suitable channel settings for any given purpose. This report describes calibration of the Grassholme channels (using water of the Grassholme Reservoir) for the biological experiments of spring - summer 1982. The main variables that are discussed are valve turns and discharge and velocity and depth. It also seeks to establish relationships which will be of value in future managment of the channels for experimental purposes
Water temperature studies on the R. North Tyne after impoundment by Kielder dam. 3. Preliminary examination of water temperature data
The report describes the results of preliminary analyses of data obtained from a series of water temperature loggers sited at various distances (0.8 to 21.8 km) downstream of Kielder dam on the River North Tyne and in two natural tributaries. The report deals with three aspects of the water temperature records: An analysis of an operational aspect of the data sets for selected stations, a simple examination of the effects of impoundment upon water temperature at or close to the point of release, relative to natural river temperatures, and an examination of rate of change of monthly means of daily mean, maximum, minimum and range (maximum - minimum) with distance downstream of the point of release during 1983
Effects of water quality in Bassenthwaite Lake on anglers' catches of salmon and sea-trout in the River Derwent
This is the report on the Effects of Water Quality in the Bassenthwaite Lake on Anglers Catches of Salmon and Sea-trout in the River Derwent April 1993 by the Institute of Freshwater Ecology. An analysis of the catch statistics for salmon and sea-trout in the Rivers Derwent and Cocker was undertaken in relation to available information on the algal water quality in Bassenthwaite Lake to test the hypothesis that poor catch returns were associated with a deterioration of water quality within the lake. Analysis of the catch statistics failed to reveal any correlation between water quality and catch returns for either species of fish and it is concluded that any water deterioration in Bassenthwaite Lake has not caused any major damage to the salmon and sea trout fisheries of the Derwent/Cocker system. This conclusion is supported by the analysis of the Windermere/Leven and Crake system, where no correlation could be found between lake water quality and downstream catches of migratory salmonid fish. However, the possibility still exists and such an effect might be detected by further field work on the macroinvertebrates and on the composition of potential salmonid spawning in the area
Magnetoluminescence
Pulsar Wind Nebulae, Blazars, Gamma Ray Bursts and Magnetars all contain
regions where the electromagnetic energy density greatly exceeds the plasma
energy density. These sources exhibit dramatic flaring activity where the
electromagnetic energy distributed over large volumes, appears to be converted
efficiently into high energy particles and gamma-rays. We call this general
process magnetoluminescence. Global requirements on the underlying, extreme
particle acceleration processes are described and the likely importance of
relativistic beaming in enhancing the observed radiation from a flare is
emphasized. Recent research on fluid descriptions of unstable electromagnetic
configurations are summarized and progress on the associated kinetic
simulations that are needed to account for the acceleration and radiation is
discussed. Future observational, simulation and experimental opportunities are

Following from this, the paper examines the reasons why the various facets of academic freedom are important and why the principle should continue to be supported
A first-principles approach to electrical transport in atomic-scale nanostructures
We present a first-principles numerical implementation of Landauer formalism
for electrical transport in nanostructures characterized down to the atomic
level. The novelty and interest of our method lies essentially on two facts.
First of all, it makes use of the versatile Gaussian98 code, which is widely
used within the quantum chemistry community. Secondly, it incorporates the
semi-infinite electrodes in a very generic and efficient way by means of Bethe
lattices. We name this method the Gaussian Embedded Cluster Method (GECM). In
order to make contact with other proposed implementations, we illustrate our
technique by calculating the conductance in some well-studied systems such as
metallic (Al and Au) nanocontacts and C-atom chains connected to metallic (Al
and Au) electrodes. In the case of Al nanocontacts the conductance turns out to
be quite dependent on the detailed atomic arrangement. On the contrary, the
conductance in Au nanocontacts presents quite universal features. In the case
of C chains, where the self-consistency guarantees the local charge transfer
and the correct alignment of the molecular and electrode levels, we find that
the conductance oscillates with the number of atoms in the chain regardless of
the type of electrode. However, for short chains and Al electrodes the even-odd

Is undernutrition prognostic of infection complications in children undergoing surgery? A systematic review
Background: Healthcare-associated infections are costly and are increasingly viewed as an indicator of the quality of care. Although strategies to reduce infections have become widespread, few studies have formally investigated the role of undernutrition on the development of infection-related complications in children after surgery.
Aim: To perform a systematic review of the literature to determine if undernutrition is prognostic of postoperative infection complications in children.
Methods: Electronic bibliographic and research databases were searched from 1950 to 2014. Inclusion criteria were studies in children (age <18 years) evaluating pre-operative nutritional status and reporting postoperative infection complications. Quality assessment was performed independently by two reviewers, with disagreements resolved by a third reviewer. The quality of the evidence was judged to be low in the majority of studies.
Findings: Ten cohort and two caseecontrol studies met the inclusion criteria. Five studies reported an outcome combining infection-related complications, with the remainder reporting individual infection complications. Six studies reported surgical site infection (SSI) alone or in combination with other infection complications. Direct comparison between studies was difficult due to clinical and diagnostic heterogeneity. Unadjusted analyses (for patient or clinical variables) were suggestive of a relationship between undernutrition and infection complications. In studies controlling for other variables, the analyses did not remain significant for SSI.
Conclusion: There was low-quality evidence that undernutrition may be predictive of postoperative infection complications in children, with the exception of SSI. However, inconsistencies in nutritional and outcome assessments made it difficult to draw conclusions. Larger, high-quality studies are warranted to further investigate a potential prognostic relationship
Investigation of Some Physical Properties of Accretion Induced Collapse in Producing Millisecond Pulsars
We investigate some physical characteristics of Millisecond Pulsar (MSP) such
as magnetic fields, spin periods and masses, that are produced by Accretion
Induced Collapse (AIC) of an accreting white dwarf (WD) in stellar binary
systems. We also investigate the changes of these characteristics during the
mass-transfer phase of the system in its way to become a MSP. Our approach
allows us to follow the changes in magnetic fields and spin periods during the
conversion of WDs to MSPs via AIC process. We focus our attention mainly on the
massive binary WDs (M > 1.0Msun) forming cataclysmic variables, that could
potentially evolve to reach Chandrasekhar limit, thereafter they collapse and
become MSPs. Knowledge about these parameters might be useful for further
