    Transitions in rolling-sliding wheel/rail contact condition during running-in

    The risk of wheel-climb derailment increases if the traction coefficient in the wheel/rail contact is too high. This has been observed to happen more frequently just after wheel machining. This work investigates how the traction coefficient rises with evolution of the wheel/rail interface during the running-in. Experiments were performed using a full-scale wheel/rail contact rig and an ultrasonic array transducer mounted in the rail. Results were used to determine the stiffness of the contact interface. Contact stiffness appeared to be positively correlated with the traction coefficient. Owing to the conforming of the interface, contact stiffness increases before the traction coefficient rises. The work will allow recommendation of wheel machining to be made to help reduce the problem of wheel-climb derailment

    Non-contact measurement of the thickness of a surface film using a superimposed ultrasonic standing wave

    Most methods used to measure the thickness of thin liquid or solid surface films and coatings need access to the coated surface. In this work reflected ultrasonic pulses were used to measure a coating thickness from a solid back face. Piezoelectric transducers on the solid back face emitted ultrasound waves and received the waves that bounced off the front face. The magnitude of the reflected wave was dependent on the film thickness at the front face. Most pulse-echo ultrasonic approaches use the time-of-flight through the surface layer to determine its thickness. However, as the film becomes thinner, the reflected echoes overlap and there is often an acoustic mismatch between the solid and the surface film that reduces the signal strength. In this work, we propose the use of an ultrasonic continuously repeated chirp longitudinal wave to amplify the effect of the surface film. Multiple reflections interfere within the solid to form a superimposed standing wave whose amplitude spectrum is highly dependent on the surface film thickness thus overcoming the acoustic mismatch problem. Two bare 10 MHz piezoelectric elements were bonded to a 10 mm thick aluminium solid in a pitch-catch arrangement such that one continuously sends repeating chirp ultrasound waves and the other acts as the receiver. The transmitter was set to send a repeating chirp wave of 4 ms duration corresponding to the bandwidth of the transducer in order to maximise signal amplitude. The incident and reflected waves constructively and destructively interfere to form a superimposed standing wave within the solid. The solid/surface film to solid/air boundary condition frequency spectra ratio showed the film resonant frequency modes as minima. Using this technique epoxy coatings ranging from 70 μm to 350 μm were measured and showed a good correlation with independent measurements using a surface profilometer

    Non-intrusive measurement of strip thickness and roll-bite length in metal rolling

    It is important to monitor the rolled strip thickness standard to minimize material waste and loss of profit due to strip flatness defects, and also to maintain the product’s size and dimensional homogeneity. Several online measurement techniques are available but none of this can give an in situ measurement within the roll bite. Due to this, a novice experimental method utilizing ultrasonic reflection sensor mounted on one roll was developed for in situ measurement of strip thickness and roll-bite length during cold rolling process. A pitch–catch method was used whereby a piezoelectric element generated an ultrasonic pulse and transmitted to the contact interface evaluated on a pilot mill. The reflected signal was captured by a second piezoelectric element and analysed to determine the condition at the strip–roll interface. This approach was implemented on a pilot mill and reflections from various locations in the roll bite during the rolling were recorded. Recorded signals were used to estimate the rolled strip thickness and roll-bite length after the rolling process

    Ab initio many-body calculations on infinite carbon and boron-nitrogen chains

    In this paper we report first-principles calculations on the ground-state electronic structure of two infinite one-dimensional systems: (a) a chain of carbon atoms and (b) a chain of alternating boron and nitrogen atoms. Meanfield results were obtained using the restricted Hartree-Fock approach, while the many-body effects were taken into account by second-order M{\o}ller-Plesset perturbation theory and the coupled-cluster approach. The calculations were performed using 6-31GG^{**} basis sets, including the d-type polarization functions. Both at the Hartree-Fock (HF) and the correlated levels we find that the infinite carbon chain exhibits bond alternation with alternating single and triple bonds, while the boron-nitrogen chain exhibits equidistant bonds. In addition, we also performed density-functional-theory-based local density approximation (LDA) calculations on the infinite carbon chain using the same basis set. Our LDA results, in contradiction to our HF and correlated results, predict a very small bond alternation. Based upon our LDA results for the carbon chain, which are in agreement with an earlier LDA calculation calculation [ E.J. Bylaska, J.H. Weare, and R. Kawai, Phys. Rev. B 58, R7488 (1998).], we conclude that the LDA significantly underestimates Peierls distortion. This emphasizes that the inclusion of many-particle effects is very important for the correct description of Peierls distortion in one-dimensional systems.Comment: 3 figures (included).     Ultrasonic roll bite measurements in cold rolling – Roll stress and deformation

    In cold rolling of thin metal strip, contact conditions between the work rolls and the strip are of great importance: roll deformations and their effect on strip thickness variation may lead to strip flatness defects and thickness inhomogeneity. To control the process, several online measurements are usually carried out such as the rolling load, forward slip and strip tensions at each stand. Shape defects of the strip are usually evaluated after the last stand of a rolling mill thanks to a flatness measuring roll. However, none of these measurements is made within the roll bite itself due to the harsh conditions taking place in that area. This paper presents a sensor capable of monitoring roll deformations as well as roll radial stresses in situ and in real time. The sensor emits ultrasonic pulses that reflect from the roll surface. The time-of-flight (ToF) of the pulses is recorded during the testing. The sensor system was incorporated into a work roll and tested on a pilot rolling mill. Measurements were taken as steel strips were rolled under different strip elongation. Roll deformation and radial stresses obtained from the experimental data are in good agreement with numerical results computed with a cold rolling model developed in non-linear Finite Element software

    Piston ring oil film thickness measurements in a four-stroke diesel engine during steady-state, start-up and shut-down

    Internal combustion engine research predominantly focuses on routes to lower emissions to meet various emission legislation. Lower emissions can be achieved with increased fuel efficiency and less lubricant throw off/lubricant combustion in the piston ring zone. These are all dependent on the oil film that forms between the liner and piston components. This article details the use of ultrasonic sensors to study the lubricant film thickness between the engine liner and piston rings/skirt in a fired diesel two-cylinder YTR engine. The testing regime covered a series of engine speeds and loading levels and found the minimum oil film thickness to vary from 1 to 3.5 μm. Spectrograms (time-varying ultrasonic amplitude spectra) have shown a residual oil film on the liner, first present after the skirt moves above the sensor that peaks at 440 μm, which then dissipates until the next oil control ring passage. Start-up and shut-down captures have visualised the build-up and reduction of the film thickness, in which during start-up typically a 2-s interval between the first ring passage and a consistent film thickness was seen. Whilst the shut-down tests showed a lesser variation, anticipated to be due to the oil pump already operating and is, therefore, less subjective to a reduction in engine speed providing a threshold of oil remains on the liner. Measurements like this help to describe how lubrication occurs in the piston ring zone and hence can optimise component design and an oil injection schedule

    Socioeconomic disparities in physical health among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children in Western Australia

    Objective. Few empirical studies have specifically examined the relationship between socio-economic status (SES) and health in Indigenous populations of Australia. We sought to provide insights into the nature of this relationship by examining socio-economic disparities in physical health outcomes among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children in Western Australia. Design. We used a diverse set of health and SES indicators from a representative survey conducted in 20002002 on the health and development of 5289 Indigenous children aged 017 years in Western Australia. Analysis was conducted using multivariate logistic regression within a multilevel framework. Results. After controlling for age and sex, we found statistically significant socio- economic disparities in health in almost half of the associations that were investigated, although the direction, shape and magnitude of associations differed. For ear infections, recurring chest infections and sensory function problems, the patterns were generally consistent with a positive socio-economic gradient where better health was associated with higher SES. The reverse pattern was found for asthma, accidents and injuries, and oral health problems, although this was primarily observed for area-level SES indicators. Conclusion. Conventional notions of social position and class have some influence on the physical health of Indigenous children, although the diversity of results implies that there are other ways of conceptualising and measuring SES that are important for Indigenous populations. We need to consider factors that relate specifically to Indigenous circumstances and culture in the past and present day, and give more thought to how we measure social position in the Indigenous community, to gain a better understanding of the pathways from SES to Indigenous child health
