    Effects of Elevated Temperature and Carbon Dioxide on the Growth and Survival of Larvae and Juveniles of Three Species of Northwest Atlantic Bivalves

    Rising CO2 concentrations and water temperatures this century are likely to have transformative effects on many coastal marine organisms. Here, we compared the responses of two life history stages (larval, juvenile) of three species of calcifying bivalves (Mercenaria mercenaria, Crassostrea virginica, and Argopecten irradians) to temperatures (24 and 28°C) and CO2 concentrations (∼250, 390, and 750 ppm) representative of past, present, and future summer conditions in temperate estuaries. Results demonstrated that increases in temperature and CO2 each significantly depressed survival, development, growth, and lipid synthesis of M. mercenaria and A. irradians larvae and that the effects were additive. Juvenile M. mercenaria and A. irradians were negatively impacted by higher temperatures while C. virginica juveniles were not. C. virginica and A. irradians juveniles were negatively affected by higher CO2 concentrations, while M. mercenaria was not. Larvae were substantially more vulnerable to elevated CO2 than juvenile stages. These findings suggest that current and future increases in temperature and CO2 are likely to have negative consequences for coastal bivalve populations

    Impact of Ocean Warming and Ocean Acidification on Larval Development and Calcification in the Sea Urchin Tripneustes gratilla

    Background: As the oceans simultaneously warm, acidify and increase in P-CO2, prospects for marine biota are of concern. Calcifying species may find it difficult to produce their skeleton because ocean acidification decreases calcium carbonate saturation and accompanying hypercapnia suppresses metabolism. However, this may be buffered by enhanced growth and metabolism due to warming.Methodology/Principal Findings: We examined the interactive effects of near-future ocean warming and increased acidification/P-CO2 on larval development in the tropical sea urchin Tripneustes gratilla. Larvae were reared in multifactorial experiments in flow-through conditions in all combinations of three temperature and three pH/P-CO2 treatments. Experiments were placed in the setting of projected near future conditions for SE Australia, a global change hot spot. Increased acidity/P-CO2 and decreased carbonate mineral saturation significantly reduced larval growth resulting in decreased skeletal length. Increased temperature (+3 degrees C) stimulated growth, producing significantly bigger larvae across all pH/P-CO2 treatments up to a thermal threshold (+6 degrees C). Increased acidity (-0.3-0.5 pH units) and hypercapnia significantly reduced larval calcification. A +3 degrees C warming diminished the negative effects of acidification and hypercapnia on larval growth.Conclusions and Significance: This study of the effects of ocean warming and CO2 driven acidification on development and calcification of marine invertebrate larvae reared in experimental conditions from the outset of development (fertilization) shows the positive and negative effects of these stressors. In simultaneous exposure to stressors the dwarfing effects of acidification were dominant. Reduction in size of sea urchin larvae in a high P-CO2 ocean would likely impair their performance with negative consequent effects for benthic adult populations

    Southern Ocean pteropods at risk from ocean warming and acidification

    Early life stages of marine calcifiers are particularly vulnerable to climate change. In the Southern Ocean aragonite undersaturation events and areas of rapid warming already occur and are predicted to increase in extent. Here, we present the first study to successfully hatch the polar pteropod Limacina helicina antarctica and observe the potential impact of exposure to increased temperature and aragonite undersaturation resulting from ocean acidification (OA) on the early life stage survival and shell morphology. High larval mortality (up to 39%) was observed in individuals exposed to perturbed conditions. Warming and OA induced extensive shell malformation and dissolution, respectively, increasing shell fragility. Furthermore, shell growth decreased, with variation between treatments and exposure time. Our results demonstrate that short-term exposure through passing through hotspots of OA and warming poses a serious threat to pteropod recruitment and long-term population viability

    OBJECTIVES: to assess the performance of various anthropometric methods for the evaulation of the nutritional status of pregnant women as a means of predicting low birth weight (LBW). METHODS: a descriptive cross-cutting study carried out among 433 pregnant women (>20 years) attending a Public Maternity Hospital in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The adequacy of the weight gain at the end of the pregnancy was evaluated in accordance with the proposals of the Institute of Medicine and the Brazilian Ministry of Health. The sensitivity, specificity and accuracy of the adequacy of weight gain at the end of the pregnancy or nutritional state of mother as a predictor of low birth weight were calculated. RESULTS: the sensitivity of the various methods varied from 63.1% to 68.4% and the specificity from 71.2% to 75.1%. The adapted Institute of Medicine proposal drawn up by the Brazilian Ministry of Health, according to the classification of the pre-delivery nutritional status of the mother according to the World Health Organization cutoff points showed itself to be the most accurate (74.5%), this being the most adequate method for nutritional triage for reason of its association with low birth weight (OR=4.10; 95%CI=1.53-10.92). CONCLUSIONS: the best proposals for this population are those of the Institute of Medicine and the Brazilian Ministry of Health. Further studies aiming to ascertain the most appropriate methods of anthropometric evaluation for different populations should be encouraged.<br>OBJETIVOS: avaliar o desempenho de diferentes métodos antropométricos para avaliação nutricional de gestantes para predizer o baixo peso ao nascer (BPN). A adequação do ganho de peso ao final da gestação foi avaliada segundo as propostas do Institute of Medicine e do Ministério da Saúde. Calculou-se a sensibilidade, a especificidade e a acurácia das variáveis adequação do ganho de peso gestacional total ou adequação do estado nutricional materno ao final da gestação na predição do BPN. RESULTADOS: a sensibilidade dos métodos variou de 63,1% a 68,4% e a especificidade de 71,2% a 75,1%. A adaptação da proposta do Institute of Medicine elaborada pelo Ministério da Saúde, segundo a classificação do estado nutricional pré-gestacional pelos pontos de corte da Organização Mundial da Saúde apresentou maior acurácia (74,5%), sendo este último o mais adequado para triagem nutricional pela sua associação com o BPN (OR=4,10; IC95%=1,53-10,92). CONCLUSÕES: os melhores para esta população foram as propostas do Institute of Medicine e do Ministério da Saúde. Estudos visando reconhecer os métodos de avaliação antropométrica mais adequados na gestação devem ser estimulados em diferentes populações
