    Universal relationship between crystallinity and irreversibility field of MgB2

    The relationship between irreversibility field, Hirr, and crystallinity of MgB2 bulks including carbon substituted samples was studied. The Hirr was found to increase with an increase of FWHM of MgB2 (110) peak, which corresponds to distortion of honeycomb boron sheet, and their universal correlation was discovered even including carbon substituted samples. Excellent Jc characteristics under high magnetic fields were observed in samples with large FWHM of (110) due to the enhanced intraband scattering and strengthened grain boundary flux pinning. The relationship between crystallinity and Hirr can explain the large variation of Hirr for MgB2 bulks, tapes, single crystals and thin films.Comment: 3 pages, 4 figures, to be published in Appl.     Superconductivity in Pr2Ba4Cu7O15-delta with metallic double chains

    We report superconductivity with Tc,onsetT_{c,onset}=\sim10K in Pr2_{2}Ba4_{4}Cu7_{7}O15δ_{15-\delta} compound possessing metallic double chains. A reduction treatment on as-sintered samples causes not only the enhanced metallic conduction but also the appearance of superconductivity accompanied by the c-axis elongation due to oxygen deficiency

    Possible co-existence of local itinerancy and global localization in a quasi-one-dimensional conductor

    In the chain compound PrBa2_2Cu4_4O8_8 localization appears simultaneously with a dimensional crossover in the electronic ground state when the scattering rate in the chains exceeds the hopping rate between the chains. Here we report the discovery of a large, transverse magnetoresistance in PrBa2_2Cu4_4O8_8 in the localized regime. This result suggests a novel form of localization whereby electrons retain their metallic (quasi-one-dimensional) character over a microscopic length scale despite the fact that macroscopically, they exhibit localized (one-dimensional) behavior.Comment: 4 pages, 4 Figure

    Fragile three-dimensionality in the quasi-one-dimensional cuprate PrBa_2Cu_4O_8

    In this article we report on the experimental realization of dimensional crossover phenomena in the chain compound PrBa2_2Cu4_4O8_8 using temperature, high magnetic fields and disorder as independent tuning parameters. In purer crystals of PrBa2_2Cu4_4O8_8, a highly anisotropic three-dimensional Fermi-liquid state develops at low temperatures. This metallic state is extremely susceptible to disorder however and localization rapidly sets in. We show, through quantitative comparison of the relevant energy scales, that this metal/insulator crossover occurs precisely when the scattering rate within the chain exceeds the interchain hopping rate(s), i.e. once carriers become confined to a single conducting element.Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures, published at http://www.iop.org/EJ/article/1367-2630/8/9/172/njp6_9_172.htm

    Angle-resolved photoemission study of insulating and metallic Cu-O chains in PrBa2_2Cu3_3O7_7 and PrBa2_2Cu4_4O8_8

    We compare the angle-resolved photoemission spectra of the hole-doped Cu-O chains in PrBa2_2Cu3_3O7_7 (Pr123) and in PrBa2_2Cu4_4O8_8 (Pr124). While, in Pr123, a dispersive feature from the chain takes a band maximum at kbk_b (momentum along the chain) \sim π/4\pi/4 and loses its spectral weight around the Fermi level, it reaches the Fermi level at kbk_b \sim π/4\pi/4 in Pr124. Although the chains in Pr123 and Pr124 are approximately 1/4-filled, they show contrasting behaviors: While the chains in Pr123 have an instability to charge ordering, those in Pr124 avoid it and show an interesting spectral feature of a metallic coupled-chain system.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures, to be published in PR

    Irradiation-induced confinement in a quasi-one-dimensional metal

    The anisotropic resistivity of PrBa2_2Cu4_4O8_8 has been measured as a function of electron irradiation fluence. Localization effects are observed for extremely small amounts of disorder corresponding to electron mean-free-paths of order 100 unit cells. Estimates of the localization corrections suggest that this anomalous localization threshold heralds a crossover to a ground state with pronounced one-dimensional character in which conduction electrons become confined to a small cluster of chains.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

    We report a systematic study on the effect of partial substitution of Sc3+^{3+} by Ti4+^{4+} in Sr2_{2}ScFeAsO3_{3}, Ca2_{2}ScFeAsO3_{3} and Sr3_{3}Sc2_{2}Fe2_{2}As2_{2}O5_{5} on their electrical properties.     Elevated Expression of MAPK Phosphatase 3 in Breast Tumors—A Mechanism of Tamoxifen Resistance

    Antiestrogen resistance is a major clinical problem in the treatment of breast cancer. Altered growth factor signaling with estrogen receptor (ER) α has been shown to be associated with the development of resistance. Gene expression profiling was utilized to identify MAPK phosphatase 3 (MKP3) whose expression was correlated with response to the antiestrogen tamoxifen in both patients and in vitro derived cell line models. Overexpression of MKP3 rendered ERα-positive breast cancer cells resistant to the growth inhibitory effects of tamoxifen, and enhanced tamoxifen agonist activity in endometrial cells. MKP3 overexpression was associated with lower levels of activated ERK1,2 phosphorylation in the presence of estrogen, but that estrogen deprivation and tamoxifen treatment decreased MKP3 phosphatase activity, leading to an up-regulation of pERK1,2 MAPK, phosphoserine 118 of ERα, and cyclin D1. The MEK inhibitor PD98059 blocked tamoxifen-resistant growth. Accumulation of reactive oxygen species was observed with tamoxifen treatment of MKP3 overexpressing cells, and antioxidant treatment increased MKP3 phosphatase activity, thereby blocking resistance. Furthermore, PD98059 increased the levels of phospho-JNK in tamoxifen-treated MKP3 overexpressing cells, suggesting an interaction between MKP3 levels, activation of ERK1,2 MAPK, and JNK signaling in human breast cancer cells. MKP3 represents a novel mechanism of resistance which may be a potential biomarker for the use of ERK1,2 and/or JNK inhibitors in combination with tamoxifen treatment

    Search for CP Violation in the Decays D0KS0P0D^0\rightarrow K^0_S P^0

    We have searched for CP violation in the decays D0KS0P0D^0\rightarrow K^0_S P^0 where P0P^0 denotes a neutral pseudo-scalar meson which is either a π0\pi^0, η\eta, or η\eta' using KEKB asymmetric-energy e+ee^+e^- collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 791 fb1^{-1} collected with the Belle detector. No evidence of significant CP violation is observed. We report the most precise CP asymmetry measurement in the decay D0KS0π0D^0\rightarrow K^0_S\pi^0 to date: ACPD0KS0π0=(0.28±0.19±0.10)A_{CP}^{D^0\rightarrow K^0_S\pi^0}=(-0.28\pm0.19\pm0.10)%. We also report the first measurements of CP asymmetries in the decays D0KS0ηD^0\rightarrow K^0_S\eta and D0KS0ηD^0\rightarrow K^0_S\eta': ACPD0KS0η=(+0.54±0.51±0.16)A_{CP}^{D^0\rightarrow K^0_S\eta}=(+0.54\pm0.51\pm0.16)% and ACPD0KS0η=(+0.98±0.67±0.14)A_{CP}^{D^0\rightarrow K^0_S\eta'}=(+0.98\pm0.67\pm0.14)%, respectively
