The aim of the present study was to clarify the effects of environmental change while climbing Mt. Daisen on forced vital capacity and forced expiratory volume % in young women in summer. Seven healthy Japanese women (age: 22.6 ± 4.2 years) volunteered to climb Mt. Daisen (1,709m), located in Tottori prefecture, in August. Participants\u27 expiratory forced vital capacity (FVC), forced expiratory volume % (FEV_%) and arterial oxygen saturation (SpO_2) were measured at 4 points (Ground: 10m, Rest point: 780m, Summit: 1,709m, Goal point: 780m). The measurements were conducted soon after the subjects\u27 arrival at each point. The degree of dyspnea sensation was measured at Ground, Rest point, Goal point and at each station. There were no significant changes in FVC. FEV_% at the summit was significantly lower than at the Ground and Rest point. No significant differences were found in SpO_2 at each measuring point. The degree of dyspnea sensation at each station soon after the subjects\u27 arrival was significantly higher than those at the Rest point. The results of this study indicated mild airway contraction induced by stresses on the respiratory system from increasing exercise intensity during an ascent of Mt. Daisen

Relationship between Protection against Cold and the Physiological Index during a Cold Environment

A snow cave is a bivouac shelter used in mountain climbing that is widely used as a shelter against the cold during winter. In the outdoors, wind velocity and air temperature have an influence on temperature change. It could stabilize body temperature if it can control the convection of ambient air. This paper could develop a theory focusing on the relation between physiological indexes and the protection against the cold while staying in a snow cave. For example, protection against the cold could be thermal insulation underwear, thermal insulation gloves, thermal insulation socks, a steam warmed temperature sheet and a rescue sheet. Measurement items were heart rate, blood pressure, rectal temperature, score of a subjective thermal sensation and the activity of the parasympathetic nervous system. It was clarified that the protection against the cold could be effective for the decrease of the physiological index. These field studies suggest that they would enable the adaptation in the adjustment range of the autonomic nervous system given these protections against the cold

Targeting miR-223 in neutrophils enhances the clearance of Staphylococcus aureus in infected wounds

Abstract Argonaute 2 bound mature microRNA (Ago2‐miRNA) complexes are key regulators of the wound inflammatory response and function in the translational processing of target mRNAs. In this study, we identified four wound inflammation‐related Ago2‐miRNAs (miR‐139‐5p, miR‐142‐3p, miR‐142‐5p, and miR‐223) and show that miR‐223 is critical for infection control. miR‐223Y/− mice exhibited delayed sterile healing with prolonged neutrophil activation and interleukin‐6 expression, and markedly improved repair of Staphylococcus aureus‐infected wounds. We also showed that the expression of miR‐223 was regulated by CCAAT/enhancer binding protein alpha in human neutrophils after exposure to S. aureus peptides. Treatment with miR‐223Y/−‐derived neutrophils, or miR‐223 antisense oligodeoxynucleotides in S. aureus‐infected wild‐type wounds markedly improved the healing of these otherwise chronic, slow healing wounds. This study reveals how miR‐223 regulates the bactericidal capacity of neutrophils at wound sites and indicates that targeting miR‐223 might be of therapeutic benefit for infected wounds in the clinic

【Purpose】To investigate the progression of vascular lesions of polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy (PCV) as viewed with indocyanine green angiography and the visual prognosis of these eyes. 【Design】Retrospective case study. 【Methods】We reviewed retrospectively the medical records of 88 consecutive patients (88 eyes) with PCV who had been examined with indocyanine green angiography for more than 2 years. 【Results】Depending on the initial area of the vascular lesion, eyes were divided into smaller PCV (baseline area of lesion being < 1 disc area [DA], n = 22) and larger PCV (baseline area of lesion being ≄ 1 DA, n = 66). In larger PCV, the mean area of the lesion progressed significantly from 6.49 ± 8.96 mm2 to 16.27 ± 14.19 mm2 (P < .0001) with marked deterioration of visual acuity (P < .0001) during follow-up. In contrast, smaller PCV often showed minimal progression of the lesion, only limited exudative change, and the eyes maintained their initially good vision to the final visit. Smaller PCV lesions rarely progressed to extensive PCV lesions. Severe vision-threatening complications (ie, suprachoroidal hemorrhage, vitreous hemorrhage, and tears of the retinal pigment epithelium) were seen only in eyes with larger PCV, and in studying single nucleotide polymorphisms A69S of ARMS2 genes, there was a significant difference in T allele frequency between individuals with smaller PCV and those with larger PCV (20.2% vs 79.8%; P = .0235). 【Conclusions】PCV with small vascular lesions shows minimal progression and no vision-threatening complications, and these eyes often maintain good visual acuity for a long time
