Analytical solution of generalized Burton--Cabrera--Frank equations for growth and post--growth equilibration on vicinal surfaces
We investigate growth on vicinal surfaces by molecular beam epitaxy making
use of a generalized Burton--Cabrera--Frank model. Our primary aim is to
propose and implement a novel analytical program based on a perturbative
solution of the non--linear equations describing the coupled adatom and dimer
kinetics. These equations are considered as originating from a fully
microscopic description that allows the step boundary conditions to be directly
formulated in terms of the sticking coefficients at each step. As an example,
we study the importance of diffusion barriers for adatoms hopping down
descending steps (Schwoebel effect) during growth and post-growth equilibration

Testing the Children: Do Non-Genetic Health-Care Providers Differ in Their Decision to Advise Genetic Presymptomatic Testing on Minors? A Cross-Sectional Study in Five Countries in the European Union
BACKGROUND: Within Europe many guidelines exist regarding the genetic testing of minors. Predictive and presymptomatic genetic testing of minors is recommended for disorders for which medical intervention/preventive measures exist, and for which early detection improves future medical health. AIM: This study, which is part of the larger 5th EU-framework "genetic education" (GenEd) study, aimed to evaluate the self-reported responses of nongenetic health-care providers in five different EU countries (Germany, France, Sweden, the United Kingdom, and the Netherlands) when confronted with a parent requesting presymptomatic testing on a minor child for a treatable disease. METHODS: A cross-sectional study design using postal, structured scenario-based questionnaires that were sent to 8129 general practitioners (GPs) and pediatricians, between July 2004 and October 2004, addressing self-reported management of a genetic case for which early medical intervention during childhood is beneficial, involving a minor. RESULTS: Most practitioners agreed on testing the oldest child, aged 12 years (81.5% for GPs and 87.2% for pediatricians), and not testing the youngest child, aged 6 months (72.6% for GPs and 61.3% for pediatricians). After multivariate adjustment there were statistical differences between countries in recommending a genetic test for the child at the age of 8 years. Pediatricians in France (50%) and Germany (58%) would recommend a test, whereas in the United Kingdom (22%), Sweden (30%), and the Netherlands (32%) they would not. CONCLUSION: Even though presymptomatic genetic testing in minors is recommended for disorders for which medical intervention exists, EU physicians are uncertain at what age starting to do so in young children
Noncommutative Quantum Mechanics and rotating frames
We study the effect of noncommutativity of space on the physics of a quantum
interferometer located in a rotating disk in a gauge field background. To this
end, we develop a path-integral approach which allows defining an effective
action from which relevant physical quantities can be computed as in the usual
commutative case. For the specific case of a constant magnetic field, we are
able to compute, exactly, the noncommutative Lagrangian and the associated

Actors that Unify Threads and Events
There is an impedance mismatch between message-passing concurrency and virtual machines, such as the JVM. VMs usually map their threads to heavyweight OS processes. Without a lightweight process abstraction, users are often forced to write parts of concurrent applications in an event-driven style which obscures control flow, and increases the burden on the programmer. In this paper we show how thread-based and event-based programming can be unified under a single actor abstraction. Using advanced abstraction mechanisms of the Scala programming language, we implemented our approach on unmodified JVMs. Our programming model integrates well with the threading model of the underlying VM
How to obtain a lattice basis from a discrete projected space
International audienceEuclidean spaces of dimension n are characterized in discrete spaces by the choice of lattices. The goal of this paper is to provide a simple algorithm finding a lattice onto subspaces of lower dimensions onto which these discrete spaces are projected. This first obtained by depicting a tile in a space of dimension n -- 1 when starting from an hypercubic grid in dimension n. Iterating this process across dimensions gives the final result
Queen Dominance May Reduce Worker Mushroom Body Size in a Social Bee
The mushroom body (MB) is an area of the insect brain involved in learning, memory, and sensory integration. Here, we used the sweat bee Megalopta genalis (Halictidae) to test for differences between queens and workers in the volume of the MB calyces. We used confocal microscopy to measure the volume of the whole brain, MB calyces, optic lobes, and antennal lobes of queens and workers. Queens had larger brains, larger MB calyces, and a larger MB calyces:whole brain ratio than workers, suggesting an effect of social dominance in brain development. This could result from social interactions leading to smaller worker MBs, or larger queen MBs. It could also result from other factors, such as differences in age or sensory experience. To test these explanations, we next compared queens and workers to other groups. We compared newly emerged bees, bees reared in isolation for 10Â days, bees initiating new observation nests, and bees initiating new natural nests collected from the field to queens and workers. Queens did not differ from these other groups. We suggest that the effects of queen dominance over workers, rather than differences in age, experience, or reproductive status, are responsible for the queenâworker differences we observed. Worker MB development may be affected by queen aggression directly and/or manipulation of larval nutrition, which is provisioned by the queen. A plasticity model for powder compaction processes incorporating particle deformation and rearrangement

Copyright @ 2008 Elsevier Ltd.This paper develops a mechanistic model of granular materials that can be used with a commercial finite element package (ABAQUS). The model draws on the ideas of critical state soil mechanics and combines them with the theory of envelopes to develop an elasto-plastic model with a non-associated flow rule. The model incorporates both local deformation at the granule contacts, and rearrangement of the granules so that jointly they account for any bulk deformation. The mechanics of the model closely reflect the physicality of the material behaviour and the model parameters are closely linked (although not simplistically identical) to the characteristics of the granules. This not only gives an insight into the material behaviour, but also enables the model to be used to facilitate design of the material, its processing properties and, hence, component development. The model is used to simulate drained triaxial tests, settlement of a powder in a bin, and some examples of die pressing. Simulations are compared with experimental data and with predictions obtained using other models
Magnetotransport Mechanisms in Strongly Underdoped YBa_2Cu_3O_x Single Crystals
We report magnetoresistivity measurements on strongly underdoped YBa_2Cu_3O_x
(x=6.25, 6.36) single crystals in applied magnetic fields H || c-axis. We
identify two different contributions to both in-plane and out-of-plane
magnetoresistivities. The first contribution has the same sign as the
temperature coefficient of the resistivity \partial ln(\rho_i)/\partial T
(i={c,ab}). This contribution reflects the incoherent nature of the
out-of-plane transport. The second contribution is positive, quadratic in
field, with an onset temperature that correlates to the antiferromagnetic

Existence of superposition solutions for pulse propagation in nonlinear resonant media
Existence of self-similar, superposed pulse-train solutions of the nonlinear,
coupled Maxwell-Schr\"odinger equations, with the frequencies controlled by the
oscillator strengths of the transitions, is established. Some of these
excitations are specific to the resonant media, with energy levels in the
configurations of and and arise because of the interference
effects of cnoidal waves, as evidenced from some recently discovered identities
involving the Jacobian elliptic functions. Interestingly, these excitations
also admit a dual interpretation as single pulse-trains, with widely different
amplitudes, which can lead to substantially different field intensities and
