Aims: To investigate the roles of autoimmunity and microvascular injury in the pathogenesis of ulcerative colitis. Background: The aetiology of ulcerative colitis is unknown. A putative mucosal autoantigen, (UCAg), had been identified as tropomyosin, the presence of ANCA in ulcerative colitis suggested involvement of vascular factors; and disease demarcation suggested vascular anatomical distribution of disease. Methods: Using the monoclonal antibody 7E12H12, cellular localisation of the target antigen, UCAg, was studied. Comparative immunohistochemical studies were made of the staining patterns of 7E12H12 and anti-tropomyosin antibodies. The nature of the UCAg was examined further using SDS-PAGE and Western blotting. A novel dot-blot technique examined potential binding between tropomyosin and 7E12H12. In-vitro angiography examined the relation between vascular factors and the distribution of disease. The frequency of ANCA and the target antigen(s) was examined in patients with inflammatory bowel disease. Results: Immunohistochemistry demonstrated plasma membrane localisation of UCAg and revealed additional supranuclear staining. Comparative immunostaining experiments failed to show a similar localisation pattern for tropomyosin. There was no relation between UCAg expression and disease activity. SDS-PAGE, Western blotting and dot-blot experiments confirmed the presence of UCAg and tropomyosin in colon protein extracts, but no reactivity between 7E12H12 and tropomyosin. In-vitro angiography of resected ulcerative colitis colon specimens revealed a consistent relationship between the marginal artery of the colon and disease extent. ANCA were found in 57% of patients with ulcerative colitis. Novel antigenic targets for ANCA were identified: ANCA directed against bactericidal/permeability increasing protein were found in 27% of patients. Conclusions: UCAg is not tropomyosin, but the nature of this antigen remains to be determined. Novel target antigens for ANCA, present in vasculitis, have been identified in ulcerative colitis. The extent of disease appears to be determined by the anatomy of the marginal artery. These data suggest a microvascular pathogenesis for ulcerative colitis

Valuing energy performance in home purchasing: an analysis of mortgage lending for sustainable buildings

    Get PDF
Many UK lenders consider energy costs, but only as it relates to information about the customers and not the energy performance of the building. Lenders could include more detailed energy costs estimates that reflect energy performance alongside other ma jor household expenses when assessing customer affordability. At present, energy performance ratings required for all homes sold in the UK are of dubious quality and generally do not accurately reflect the likely energy costs. However, if lenders were to inc lude energy performance in their mortgage calculations this might ha ve the effect of improving the accuracy of energy performance ratings through market pressure. It may also have the consequence of increasing the value of more efficient homes, which would have lower energy costs and improve its affordability for customer s. It may also offer an opportunity for lenders to extend mortgages to improve the dwellings energy performance due to the potential increase in value. In this work, we set out the implications of mortgage lenders using the dwelling’s energy perfo rmance as part of their energy cost calculations. We also illustrate how improving the accuracy of ratings can achieve more precise estimates of energy costs. The implication of includ ing energy performance ratings when providing mortgages could result in £billions for lenders in terms of loan extensions and more accurately property values. It could also help potential purchasers understand the real costs of the properties they purchase

Cigarette smoking as a risk factor for schizophrenia or all non-affective psychoses

BACKGROUND: Smoking tobacco is regarded as an epiphenomenon in patients with schizophrenia when it may be causal. We aimed to examine whether smoking status is related to the onset of schizophrenia or the broader diagnosis of non-affective psychosis, including schizophrenia. METHODS: We used data from The Health Improvement Network primary care database to identify people aged 15-24 between 1 January 2004 and 31 December 2009. We followed them until the earliest of: first diagnosis of schizophrenia (or psychosis), patient left the practice, practice left THIN, patient died or 31 December 2014. RESULTS: In men, incidence rates for schizophrenia per 100 000 person years at risk were higher in smoking initiators (non-smoker who became a smoker during the study) than in non-smokers (adjusted IRR 1.94; 95% CI 1.29-2.91) and higher still in smokers (adjusted IRR 3.32; 95% CI 2.67-4.14). Among women, the incidence rate of schizophrenia was higher in smokers than in non-smokers (adjusted IRR 1.50; 95% CI 1.06-2.12), but no higher in smoking initiators than non-smokers. For non-affective psychosis, the pattern was similar for men but more evident in women where psychosis incidence rates were higher in smoking initiators (adjusted IRR 1.90; 95% CI 1.40-2.56) and in smokers (adjusted IRR 2.13; 95% CI 1.76-2.57) than in non-smokers. CONCLUSIONS: We found an important and strong association between smoking and incidence of schizophrenia. Smoking may increase risk through as yet unknown pathways or smoking may share genetic risk with schizophrenia and non-affective psychoses

Channel relationships from the perspectives of manufacturers and their connecting distributors in Indonesia

    Get PDF
Purpose – Paired channel relationship constructs are used to conjointly compare the perspectives of Indonesian manufacturers and their connecting distributors when engaging and relating across each shared marketing channel. The purpose of this paper is to hypothesize long-term orientation (LTO) and role-performance as joint drivers that positively influence dependence, satisfaction, and trust constructs for each manufacturer and distributor domain. Design/methodology/approach – A structural equation modelling-comparative model is developed, tested, and validated for the Indonesian manufacturing sector. The sample size is 140 pairs of mediumto- large-sized manufacturers and their connecting distributors. The respondent is individual who is responsible and knowledgeable in dealing with his/her company’s manufacturer or distributor. Findings – Both the manufacturer-distributor LTO and their role-performance jointly drive the outcomes of the shared marketing channel relationship, and both parties’ behaving similarly (except for the influence of their role-performance onto their partner’s satisfaction). Research limitations/implications – This study have not investigated possible two-way interactions between constructs across the channel. Combined, paired, manufacturer and distributor dataset questions can expose the connectivities relationships between the partners. The insignificant influence of role-performance on economic satisfaction within the manufacturer domain requires further research on the possible presence of mediating construct(s) between those constructs, and on the broadening of the definition of satisfaction. Past channel research revealed that trust interacts with satisfaction, yet this study does not find significant interactions between the outcomes constructs. Practical implications – In Indonesia each marketing channel’s manufacturer and distributor management team should jointly enhance both their shared long-term relationship, and their respective role-performance. This long-term view is implementable through long-term marketing channel contracts. Originality/value – This study contributes to marketing channel theory with the LTO and the role-performance of a channel partner jointly driving the other partner’s economic satisfaction, trust, and their dependence specifically within the Indonesian context. The benchmarking of a marketing channel’s performance within a trusting and satisfying channel relationship sets the framework for the development of future optimization studies (of at least the five connectivities constructs used herein)

Interplay between one-dimensional confinement and crystallographic anisotropy in ballistic hole quantum wires

We study the Zeeman splitting in induced ballistic 1D quantum wires aligned along the [233] and [011] axes of a high mobility (311)A undoped heterostructure. Our data shows that the g-factor anisotropy for magnetic fields applied along the high symmetry [011] direction can be explained by the 1D confinement only. However when the magnetic field is along [233] there is an interplay between the 1D confinement and 2D crystal anisotropy. This is highlighted for the [233] wire by an unusual non-monotonic behavior of the g-factor as the wire is made narrower

    On the generalized continuity equation

A generalized continuity equation extending the ordinary continuity equation has been found using quanternions. It is shown to be compatible with Dirac, Schrodinger, Klein-Gordon and diffusion equations. This generalized equation is Lorentz invariant. The transport properties of electrons are found to be governed by Schrodinger-like equation and not by the diffusion equation.Comment: 9 Latex pages, no figure

Spatial and Temporal Variation in the Natal Otolith Chemistry of a Hawaiian Reef Fish: Prospects for Measuring Population Connectivity

    Get PDF
One of the most compelling unanswered questions in marine ecology is the extent to which local populations are connected via larval exchange. Recent work has suggested that variation in the chemistry of otoliths (earstones) of fishes may function as a natural tag, potentially allowing investigators to determine sources of individual larvae and estimate larval connectivity. We analyzed the spatial and temporal variation in natal otolith chemistry of a benthic-spawning reef fish from the Hawaiian Islands. We found no consistent chemical variation at the largest scale (\u3e100 km, among islands), but found significant variation at moderate scales (sites within islands, tens of kilometres) and small scales (clutches within sites), and chemistry of otoliths was not stable between years. These results imply that we may be able to use otolith chemistry to track larval dispersal only if the scales of dispersal match those of variation in natal otolith chemistry, and that separate natal otolith collections may be needed to track different cohorts of larvae. Finally, we found that elemental composition of recruit cores often did not match that of natal otoliths, suggesting that additional methodological development is required before we can effectively apply methods in otolith chemistry to the study of larval dispersal

Evaluation of the CNS and cardiovascular effects of prolonged exposure to bromotrifluromethane (CBrF3)

The proposed use of bromotrifluoromethane (CBrF3) as a fire extinguishant in aircraft, spacecraft and submarines has stimulated increasing interest and research in the toxicological properties of this compound. In a spacecraft, because of its unique recirculating life support system, the introduction of CBrF3 by leakage or intentional discharge, will result in continuous exposure of crewman to low concentrations of this compound for periods of up to 7 days, or possibly even longer. The effects of low concentrations of CBrF3, under continuous exposure conditions, on the CNS and cardiovascular systems of animals to enable an assessment of these risks were investigated

Optical properties of high quality Cu2ZnSnSe4 thin films

Cu2ZnSnSe4 thin films, fabricated on bare or molybdenum coated glass substrates by magnetron sputtering and selenisation, were studied by a range of techniques. Photoluminescence spectra reveal an excitonic peak and two phonon replicas of a donor-acceptor pair (DAP) recombination. Its acceptor and donor ionisation energies are 27 and 7 meV, respectively. This demonstrates that high-quality Cu2ZnSnSe4 thin films can be fabricated. An experimental value for the longitudinal optical phonon energy of 28 meV was estimated. The band gap energy of 1.01 eV at room temperature was determined using optical absorption spectr
