Early History Of ISNA
The International Symposia on Nonlinear Acoustics, now referred to as ISNA, have convened regularly since 1968, bringing together scientists and engineers to report and discuss the latest developments in this branch of nonlinear physics. The fact that this series of symposia is still going strong after more than four decades is testimony that nonlinear acoustics has established itself as a distinct, important, and vibrant field of research. In this paper we take a look back at the early years of ISNA to recall how it all began and trace the evolution of the symposia into their current form.Applied Research Laboratorie
Does SN 1987A contain a rapidly vibrating neutron star
If the recently reported 0.5 ms-period pulsed optical signal from the direction of Supernova 1987A originated in a young neutron star, its interpretation as a rotational period has difficulties. The surface magnetic field would have to be much lower than expected, and the high rotation rate may rule out preferred nuclear equations of state. It is pointed out here that a remnant radial vibration of a neutron star, excited in the supernova event, may survive for several years with about the observed (gravitationally redshifted) period. Heavy ions at the low-density stellar surface, periodically shocked by the vibration, may efficiently produce narrow pulses of optical cyclotron radiation in a surface field of about a trillion gauss

Coupled Pulsation And Translation Of A Gas Bubble And Rigid Particle
A nonlinear analytic model describing the interaction of a spherical gas bubble and spherical rigid particle is presented. Both the bubble and particle are free to translate. The model is accurate to fifth order in terms of a nondimensional expansion parameter R/d, where R is a characteristic radius and d is the distance separating the bubble and particle. Numerical simulation results are presented to demonstrate the effects of key particle parameters and an external acoustic source.Applied Research Laboratorie
Model For The Dynamics Of A Bubble Undergoing Small Shape Oscillations Between Elastic Layers
A model is presented for a pulsating and translating gas bubble in a channel formed by two soft elastic parallel layers. The bubble is free to undergo small shape deformations. Coupled nonlinear second-order differential equations are obtained for the shape and position of the bubble, and numerical integration of an expression for the liquid velocity at the layer interfaces yields an estimate of their displacement. Simulations reveal behavior consistent with laboratory observations.Applied Research Laboratorie
Three-Body Dynamics with Gravitational Wave Emission
We present numerical three-body experiments that include the effects of
gravitational radiation reaction by using equations of motion that include the
2.5-order post-Newtonian force terms, which are the leading order terms of
energy loss from gravitational waves. We simulate binary-single interactions
and show that close approach cross sections for three 1 solar mass objects are
unchanged from the purely Newtonian dynamics except for close approaches
smaller than 1.0e-5 times the initial semimajor axis of the binary. We also
present cross sections for mergers resulting from gravitational radiation
during three-body encounters for a range of binary semimajor axes and mass
ratios including those of interest for intermediate-mass black holes (IMBHs).
Building on previous work, we simulate sequences of high-mass-ratio three-body
encounters that include the effects of gravitational radiation. The simulations
show that the binaries merge with extremely high eccentricity such that when
the gravitational waves are detectable by LISA, most of the binaries will have
eccentricities e > 0.9 though all will have circularized by the time they are
detectable by LIGO. We also investigate the implications for the formation and
growth of IMBHs and find that the inclusion of gravitational waves during the
encounter results in roughly half as many black holes ejected from the host
cluster for each black hole accreted onto the growing IMBH.Comment: 34 pages, 14 figures, minor corrections to match version accepted by
