Polyimide/SU-8 catheter-tip MEMS gauge pressure sensor.

    Get PDF
This paper describes the development of a polyimide/SU-8 catheter-tip MEMS gauge pressure sensor. Finite element analysis was used to investigate critical parameters, impacting on the device design and sensing characteristics. The sensing element of the device was fabricated by polyimide-based micromachining on a flexible membrane, using embedded thin-film metallic wires as piezoresistive elements. A chamber containing this flexible membrane was sealed using an adapted SU-8 bonding technique. The device was evaluated experimentally and its overall performance compared with a commercial silicon-based pressure sensor. Furthermore, the device use was demonstrated by measuring blood pressure and heart rate in vivo

Semisolid processing characteristics of AM series Mg alloys by rheo-diecasting

The official published version of this Article can be found at the link below - Copyright @ 2006 ASM InternationalAn investigation has been made into the solidification behavior and microstructural evolution of AM50, AM70, and AM90 alloys during rheo-diecasting, their processibility, and the resulting mechanical properties. It was found that solidification of AM series alloys under intensive melt shearing in the unique twin-screw slurry maker during rheo-diecasting gave rise to numerous spheroidal primary magnesium (Mg) particles that were uniformly present in the microstructure. As a result, the network of the beta-Mg17Al12 phase was consistently interrupted by these spheroidal and ductile particles. Such a microstructure reduced the obstacle of deformation and the harmfulness of the beta-Mg17Al12 network on ductility, and therefore improved the ductility of rheo-diecast AM alloys. It was shown that, even with 9 wt pct Al, the elongation of rheo-diecast AM90 still achieved (9 +/- 1.2) pct. Rheodiecasting thus provides an attractive processing route for upgrading the alloy specification of AM series alloys by increasing the aluminum (Al) content while ensuring ductility. Assessment of the processibility of AM series alloys for semisolid processing showed that high Al content AM series alloys are more suitable for rheo-diecasting than low Al content alloys, because of the lower sensitivity of solid fraction to temperature, the lower liquidus temperature, and the smaller interval between the semisolid processing temperature and the complete solidification temperature. This work is supported by the EPSR

What can we learn from neutrinoless double beta decay experiments?

    Get PDF
We assess how well next generation neutrinoless double beta decay and normal neutrino beta decay experiments can answer four fundamental questions. 1) If neutrinoless double beta decay searches do not detect a signal, and if the spectrum is known to be inverted hierarchy, can we conclude that neutrinos are Dirac particles? 2) If neutrinoless double beta decay searches are negative and a next generation ordinary beta decay experiment detects the neutrino mass scale, can we conclude that neutrinos are Dirac particles? 3) If neutrinoless double beta decay is observed with a large neutrino mass element, what is the total mass in neutrinos? 4) If neutrinoless double beta decay is observed but next generation beta decay searches for a neutrino mass only set a mass upper limit, can we establish whether the mass hierarchy is normal or inverted? We base our answers on the expected performance of next generation neutrinoless double beta decay experiments and on simulations of the accuracy of calculations of nuclear matrix elements.Comment: Added reference

Investigation of Single Boron Acceptors at the Cleaved Si:B (111) Surface

The cleaved and (2 x 1) reconstructed (111) surface of p-type Si is investigated by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). Single B acceptors are identified due to their characteristic voltage-dependent contrast which is explained by a local energetic shift of the electronic density of states caused by the Coulomb potential of the negatively charged acceptor. In addition, detailed analysis of the STM images shows that apparently one orbital is missing at the B site at sample voltages of 0.4 - 0.6 V, corresponding to the absence of a localized dangling-bond state. Scanning tunneling spectroscopy confirms a strongly altered density of states at the B atom due to the different electronic structure of B compared to Si.Comment: 6 pages, 7 figure

Wavelength tuning of the spirally drawn whispering gallery mode microfiber lasers and the perspectives for sensing applications

    Get PDF
Facile and cost-efficient microcavities, as well as the tuning of the optical modes, especially for the application of top-grade optical devices, have been emerging as attractive research fields. In this work, controllable fabrication of the microfiber laser arrays in polymer matrix is achieved by employing the advanced spiral drawing technique. Besides the high-quality whispering gallery mode (WGM) lasing, wavelength tuning is also realized by applying external forces on the polymer matrix, which induce slightly enlarged cavity sizes. Furthermore, the perspectives of utilizing the microfiber arrays as force and strain sensors are discussed and demonstrated. 2017 Optical Society of America

WMAP constraint on the P-term inflationary model

In light of WMAP results, we examine the observational constraint on the P-term inflation. With the tunable parameter ff, P-term inflation contains richer physics than D-term and F-term inflationary models. We find the logarithmic derivative spectral index with n>1n>1 on large scales and n<1n<1 on small scales in agreement to observation. We obtained a reasonable range for the choice of the gauge coupling constant gg in order to meet the requirements of WMAP observation and the expected number of the e-foldings. Although tuning ff and gg we can have larger values for the logarithmic derivative of the spectral index, it is not possible to satisfy all observational requirements for both, the spectral index and its logarithmic derivative at the same time.Comment: 6 pages, double column, 13 figures included. Improved Estimates of Cosmological Perturbations

We recently derived exact solutions for the scalar, vector and tensor mode functions of a single, minimally coupled scalar plus gravity in an arbitrary homogeneous and isotropic background. These solutions are applied to obtain improved estimates for the primordial scalar and tensor power spectra of anisotropies in the cosmic microwave background.Comment: 31 pages, 4 figures, LaTeX 2epsilon, this version corrects an embarrasing mistake (in the published version) for the parameter q_C.
