Hierarchical event selection for video storyboards with a case study on snooker video visualization
Video storyboard, which is a form of video visualization, summarizes the major events in a video using illustrative visualization. There are three main technical challenges in creating a video storyboard, (a) event classification, (b) event selection and (c) event illustration. Among these challenges, (a) is highly application-dependent and requires a significant amount of application specific semantics to be encoded in a system or manually specified by users. This paper focuses on challenges (b) and (c). In particular, we present a framework for hierarchical event representation, and an importance-based selection algorithm for supporting the creation of a video storyboard from a video. We consider the storyboard to be an event summarization for the whole video, whilst each individual illustration on the board is also an event summarization but for a smaller time window. We utilized a 3D visualization template for depicting and annotating events in illustrations. To demonstrate the concepts and algorithms developed, we use Snooker video visualization as a case study, because it has a concrete and agreeable set of semantic definitions for events and can make use of existing techniques of event detection and 3D reconstruction in a reliable manner. Nevertheless, most of our concepts and algorithms developed for challenges (b) and (c) can be applied to other application areas. © 2010 IEEE
Knowledge-assisted ranking: A visual analytic application for sports event data
© 2016 IEEE. Organizing sports video data for performance analysis can be challenging, especially in cases involving multiple attributes and when the criteria for sorting frequently changes depending on the user's task. The proposed visual analytic system enables users to specify a sort requirement in a flexible manner without depending on specific knowledge about individual sort keys. The authors use regression techniques to train different analytical models for different types of sorting requirements and use visualization to facilitate knowledge discovery at different stages of the process. They demonstrate the system with a rugby case study to find key instances for analyzing team and player performance. Organizing sports video data for performance analysis can be challenging in cases with multiple attributes, and when sorting frequently changes depending on the user's task. As this video shows, the proposed visual analytic system allows interactive data sorting and exploration
Itinerant ferromagnetism in half-metallic CoS_2
We have investigated electronic and magnetic properties of the pyrite-type
CoS_2 using the linearized muffin-tin orbital (LMTO) band method. We have
obtained the ferromagnetic ground state with nearly half-metallic nature. The
half-metallic stability is studied by using the fixed spin moment method. The
non-negligible orbital magnetic moment of Co 3d electrons is obtained as in the local spin density approximation (LSDA). The calculated
ratio of the orbital to spin angular momenta / = 0.15 is
consistent with experiment. The effect of the Coulomb correlation between Co 3d
electrons is also explored with the LSDA + U method. The Coulomb correlation at
Co sites is not so large, eV, and so CoS_2 is possibly
categorized as an itinerant ferromagnet. It is found that the observed
electronic and magnetic behaviors of CoS_2 can be described better by the LSDA
than by the LSDA + U.Comment: 4 pages, 3 postscript figure
Transformation of an uncertain video search pipeline to a sketch-based visual analytics loop
Traditional sketch-based image or video search systems rely on machine learning concepts as their core technology. However, in many applications, machine learning alone is impractical since videos may not be semantically annotated sufficiently, there may be a lack of suitable training data, and the search requirements of the user may frequently change for different tasks. In this work, we develop a visual analytics systems that overcomes the shortcomings of the traditional approach. We make use of a sketch-based interface to enable users to specify search requirement in a flexible manner without depending on semantic annotation. We employ active machine learning to train different analytical models for different types of search requirements. We use visualization to facilitate knowledge discovery at the different stages of visual analytics. This includes visualizing the parameter space of the trained model, visualizing the search space to support interactive browsing, visualizing candidature search results to support rapid interaction for active learning while minimizing watching videos, and visualizing aggregated information of the search results. We demonstrate the system for searching spatiotemporal attributes from sports video to identify key instances of the team and player performance. © 1995-2012 IEEE
Exact Master Equation and Non-Markovian Decoherence for Quantum Dot Quantum Computing
In this article, we report the recent progress on decoherence dynamics of
electrons in quantum dot quantum computing systems using the exact master
equation we derived recently based on the Feynman-Vernon influence functional
approach. The exact master equation is valid for general nanostructure systems
coupled to multi-reservoirs with arbitrary spectral densities, temperatures and
biases. We take the double quantum dot charge qubit system as a specific
example, and discuss in details the decoherence dynamics of the charge qubit
under coherence controls. The decoherence dynamics risen from the entanglement
between the system and the environment is mainly non-Markovian. We further
discuss the decoherence of the double-dot charge qubit induced by quantum point
contact (QPC) measurement where the master equation is re-derived using the
Keldysh non-equilibrium Green function technique due to the non-linear coupling
between the charge qubit and the QPC. The non-Markovian decoherence dynamics in
the measurement processes is extensively discussed as well.Comment: 15 pages, Invited article for the special issue "Quantum Decoherence

Immune-Related Gene Expression in Two B-Complex Disparate Genetically Inbred Fayoumi Chicken Lines Following Eimeria maxima Infection
To investigate the influence of genetic differences in the MHC on susceptibility to avian coccidiosis, M5.1 and M15.2 B-haplotype-disparate Fayoumi chickens were orally infected with live Eimeria maxima oocysts, and BW gain, fecal oocyst production, and expression of 14 immune-related genes were determined as parameters of protective immunity. Weight loss was reduced and fecal parasite numbers were lower in birds of the M5.1 line compared with M15.2 line birds. Intestinal intraepithelial lymphocytes from M5.1 chickens expressed greater levels of transcripts encoding interferon-γ (IFN-γ), interleukin-1β (IL-1β), IL-6, IL-8, IL-12, IL-15, IL-17A, inducible nitric oxide synthase, and lipopolysaccharide-induced tumor necrosis factor-α factor and lower levels of mRNA for IFN-α, IL-10, IL-17D, NK-lysin, and tumor necrosis factor superfamily 15 compared with the M15.2 line. In the spleen, E. maxima infection was associated with greater expression levels of IFN-γ, IL-15, and IL-8 and lower levels of IL-6, IL-17D, and IL-12 in M5.1 vs. M15.2 birds. These results suggest that genetic determinants within the chicken MHC influence resistance to E. maxima infection by controlling the local and systemic expression of immune-related cytokine and chemokine genes
Search for sterile neutrino oscillation using RENO and NEOS data
We present a reactor model independent search for sterile neutrino
oscillation using 2\,509\,days of RENO near detector data and 180 days of NEOS
data. The reactor related systematic uncertainties are significantly suppressed
as both detectors are located at the same reactor complex of Hanbit Nuclear
Power Plant. The search is performed by electron
antineutrino\,() disappearance between six reactors and two
detectors with baselines of 294\,m\,(RENO) and 24\,m\,(NEOS). A spectral
comparison of the NEOS prompt-energy spectrum with a no-oscillation prediction
from the RENO measurement can explore reactor oscillations
to sterile neutrino. Based on the comparison, we obtain a 95\% C.L. excluded
region of \,eV. We also obtain a 68\% C.L. allowed
region with the best fit of \,eV and
=0.080.03 with a p-value of 8.2\%. Comparisons of
obtained reactor antineutrino spectra at reactor sources are made among RENO,
NEOS, and Daya Bay to find a possible spectral variation.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures: This manuscript has been significantly revised by
the joint reanalysis by RENO and NEOS Collaborations. (In the previous
edition, the RENO collaboration used publicly available NEOS data to evaluate
the expected neutrino spectrum at NEOS.
Young and Intermediate-age Distance Indicators
Distance measurements beyond geometrical and semi-geometrical methods, rely
mainly on standard candles. As the name suggests, these objects have known
luminosities by virtue of their intrinsic proprieties and play a major role in
our understanding of modern cosmology. The main caveats associated with
standard candles are their absolute calibration, contamination of the sample
from other sources and systematic uncertainties. The absolute calibration
mainly depends on their chemical composition and age. To understand the impact
of these effects on the distance scale, it is essential to develop methods
based on different sample of standard candles. Here we review the fundamental
properties of young and intermediate-age distance indicators such as Cepheids,
Mira variables and Red Clump stars and the recent developments in their
application as distance indicators.Comment: Review article, 63 pages (28 figures), Accepted for publication in
