Charmless decays using flavor SU(3) symmetry
The decays of mesons to a pair of charmless pseudoscalar () mesons are
analyzed within a framework of flavor SU(3). Symmetry breaking is taken into
account in tree () amplitudes through ratios of decay constants; exact SU(3)
is assumed elsewhere. Acceptable fits to and
branching ratios and CP asymmetries are obtained with tree, color-suppressed
(), penguin (), and electroweak penguin () amplitudes. Crucial
additional terms for describing processes involving and include
a large flavor-singlet penguin amplitude () as proposed earlier and a
penguin amplitude associated with intermediate and quarks. For
the mode a term associated with intermediate
and quarks also may be needed. Values of the weak phase are
obtained consistent with an earlier analysis of decays, where
denotes a vector meson, and with other analyses of CKM parameters.Comment: 26 pages, 1 figure. To be submitted to Phys. Rev. D. Reference

Doping and temperature dependence of incommensurate antiferromagnetism in underdoped lanthanum cuprates
The doping, temperature and energy dependence of the dynamical spin structure
factors of the underdoped lanthanum cuprates in the normal state is studied
within the t-J model using the fermion-spin transformation technique.
Incommensurate peaks are found at ,
at relatively low temperatures with linearly
increasing with doping at the beginning and then saturating at higher dopings.
These peaks broaden and weaken in amplitude with temperature and energy, in
good agreement with experiments. The theory also predicts a rotation of these
peaks by at even higher temperatures, being shifted to .Comment: 11 pages, PDF file, six figures are included, accepted for

Non-perturbative momentum dependence of the coupling constant and hadronic models
Models of hadron structure are associated with a hadronic scale which allows
by perturbative evolution to calculate observables in the deep inelastic
region. The resolution of Dyson-Schwinger equations leads to the freezing of
the QCD running coupling (effective charge) in the infrared, which is best
understood as a dynamical generation of a gluon mass function, giving rise to a
momentum dependence which is free from infrared divergences. We use this new
development to understand why perturbative treatments are working reasonably
well despite the smallness of the hadronic scale.Comment: Changes in Acknowledgments and PACS number
Single Photons on Pseudo-Demand from Stored Parametric Down-Conversion
We describe the results of a parametric down-conversion experiment in which
the detection of one photon of a pair causes the other photon to be switched
into a storage loop. The stored photon can then be switched out of the loop at
a later time chosen by the user, providing a single photon for potential use in
a variety of quantum information processing applications. Although the stored
single photon is only available at periodic time intervals, those times can be
chosen to match the cycle time of a quantum computer by using pulsed
down-conversion. The potential use of the storage loop as a photonic quantum
memory device is also discussed.Comment: 8 pages, 7 Figs., RevTe
Final-State Phases in Charmed Meson Two-Body Nonleptonic Decays
Observed decay rates indicate large phase differences among the amplitudes
for the charge states in and but
relatively real amplitudes in the charge states for . This
feature is traced using an SU(3) flavor analysis to a sign flip in the
contribution of one of the amplitudes contributing to the latter processes in
comparison with its contribution to the other two sets. This amplitude may be
regarded as an effect of rescattering and is found to be of magnitude
comparable to others contributing to charmed particle two-body nonleptonic
decays.Comment: 19 pages, latex, 4 figures, to be submitted to Phys. Rev.
Determinisitic Optical Fock State Generation
We present a scheme for the deterministic generation of N-photon Fock states
from N three-level atoms in a high-finesse optical cavity. The method applies
an external laser pulsethat generates an -photon output state while
adiabatically keeping the atom-cavity system within a subspace of optically
dark states. We present analytical estimates of the error due to amplitude
leakage from these dark states for general N, and compare it with explicit
results of numerical simulations for N \leq 5. The method is shown to provide a
robust source of N-photon states under a variety of experimental conditions and
is suitable for experimental implementation using a cloud of cold atoms
magnetically trapped in a cavity. The resulting N-photon states have potential
applications in fundamental studies of non-classical states and in quantum
information processing.Comment: 25 pages, 9 figure
Altered high-density lipoprotein composition is associated with risk for complications in type 2 diabetes mellitus in South Asian descendants: a cross-sectional, case-control study on lipoprotein subclass profiling
Background: Composition of high-density lipoproteins (HDL) is emerging as an important determinant in the development of microvascular complications in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Dutch South Asian (DSA) individuals with T2DM display an increased risk of microvascular complications compared with Dutch white Caucasian (DwC) individuals with T2DM. In this study, we aimed to investigate whether changes in HDL composition associate with increased microvascular risk in this ethnic group and lead to new lipoprotein biomarkers. Materials and Methods: Using H-1 nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and Bruker IVDr Lipoprotein Subclass Analysis (B.I.LISA) software, plasma lipoprotein changes were determined in 51 healthy individuals (30 DwC, 21 DSA) and 92 individuals with T2DM (45 DwC, 47 DSA) in a cross-sectional, case-control study. Differential HDL subfractions were investigated using multinomial logistic regression analyses, adjusting for possible confounders including BMI and diabetes duration. Results: We identified HDL compositional differences between healthy and diabetic individuals in both ethnic groups. Specifically, levels of apolipoprotein A2 and HDL-4 subfractions were lower in DSA compared with DwC with T2DM. Apolipoprotein A2 and HDL-4 subfractions also negatively correlated with waist circumference, waistto-hip ratio, haemoglobin A1c, glucose levels and disease duration in DSA with T2DM, and associated with increased incidence of microvascular complications .Conclusion: While HDL composition differed between controls and T2DM in both ethnic groups, the lower levels of lipid content in the smallest HDL subclass (HDL-4) in DSA with T2DM appeared to be more clinically relevant, with higher odds of having diabetes-related pan-microvascular complications such as retinopathy and neuropathy. These typical differences in HDL could be used as ethnicity-specific T2DM biomarkers.Metabolic health: pathophysiological trajectories and therap
