    Opinions on Riverboat Casinos and the Perceived Impacts on Community Quality by Quad Cities\u27 Residents

    The purposes of the study were to determine the opinions of Quad Cities residents about legalized riverboat casinos in their communities and their perceptions on the importance of community quality attributes and impacts of legalized riverboat casinos on these attributes. Differences of opinions among respondents with different demographic characteristics also were examined. Stratified systematic random sampling method was used to draw samples from the Quad Cities telephone directory; 200 residents were selected from each city. Of the 800 questionnaires mailed, 231 were returned. Residents agreed that the presence of riverboat casinos was good for the community. The majority of community quality attributes were rated as either very important or important. Residents perceived all attributes to be either improved or having no change because of the riverboat casino operations

    Brand performance of Chinese domestic vs. international hotels: Perceptions of operators as well as domestic and foreign guests

    The significant differences in financial performance between internationally branded hotels and domestically branded hotels in China inspired this study. As part of the research, we surveyed hotel operators and guests on their perception of brand performance of the hotel they managed and stayed at, respectively. Results showed that managers of internationally branded hotels were more positive about their brand performance than the guests were, whereas managers of domestically branded hotels had a similar, or sometimes lower, assessment of their brand performance. Surprisingly, from the guests’ perspective, domestic hotels received higher ratings on brand choice intention and brand loyalty, while receiving similar ratings on all other brand-related measurements, as compared to international hotels. Significant differences were also found in brand quality, trust in management, and reliability among the sub-samples. Chinese guests rated these components lower for both internationally and domestically branded hotels, while foreign guests showed stronger intentions of choosing the same domestic brand in the future.     Influence of Al doping on random lasing in ZnO nanorods

    Random lasing was demonstrated from aluminum doped ZnO nanorods fabricated on ITO coated glass substrates using simple chemical deposition technique. Different Aluminum (Al) doping parameters were explored in an attempt to realize low threshold ZnO random lasers. Results confirm threshold was strongly dependent on doping concentration and suggestive of resonant coupling with Al in lowering the threshold by 2 orders of magnitude when compared to undoped ZnO nanorods. Lowest threshold was obtained from ZnO nanorods doped with 10 mM of aluminum, suggesting best doping concentration for ZnO random lasers formed by nanorod array. Results further indicate possibility of controlling random lasing properties by adjusting the doping concentration

    Multi-Threshold Level Set Model for Image Segmentation

    A multi-threshold level set model for image segmentations is presented in the paper. The multi-threshold level set formulation uses a speed function for stopping the locations of the active contours. The speed function with multiple thresholds is designed for detecting boundaries of multiple regions of interest (ROI) in images. These thresholds can be automatically obtained by Fuzzy C-means method. The experimental results show that the proposed method is able to capture boundaries of multiple regions of interest

    Effects of wood particle size and mixing ratios of HDPE on the properties of the composites

    The main goal of this research is to innovate wood-plastic composites by using various wood particle sizes and different mixture ratios (weight ratio) of HDPE. (High Density Polyethylene). After mixing the wood particles (recycled wood waste) and the plastic powder, we use a molding and pressing process to make composites with a thickness of 12 mm. By doing so, the wood particle content can be increased to 75%. This kind of composite provides excellent dimensional stability, its moisture content is under 2.5%, and the thickness swelling rate after 24 hr water absorption is under 7.5%. The maximum static bending strength of this composite reaches 20.7 N/mm(2), and is better than that of general commercial particleboards. The composite made of larger sized wood particles has better strength properties. In addition, when the plastic content ratio increases, the dimensional stability of the composite will increase as well. After the soaking process in boiling water, the static bending strength of wet composite remained at 50%; this shows the good weather resistance of the composite. The surface veneer overlaid peeling strength of the composite showed 1.02-1.63 N/mm. After the evaluation of processing, cost of material and strength properties of the composite, we would suggest that the use of 70% of wood particles and 30% of plastic powder is practical to produce proper sized composites

    Temperature-Dependent Anomalies in the Structure of the (001) Surface of LiCu2O2

    Surface corrugation functions, derived from elastic helium atom scattering (HAS) diffraction patterns at different temperatures, reveal that the Cu2+ rows in the (001) surface of LiCu2O2 undergo an outward displacement of about 0.15 {\AA} as the surface was cooled down to 140 K. This is probably the first time that isolated one-dimensional magnetic ion arrays were realized, which qualifies the Li1+Cu2+O2-2 surface as a candidate to study one-dimensional magnetism. The rising Cu2+ rows induce a surface incommensurate structural transition along the a-direction. Surface equilibrium analysis showed that the surface Cu2+ ions at bulk-like positions experience a net outward force along the surface normal which is relieved by the displacement. Temperature-dependent changes of the surface phonon dispersions obtained with the aid of inelastic HAS measurements combined with surface lattice dynamical calculations are also reported.Comment: 4 pages, 7 figure

    Fast simultaneous detection of K-RAS mutations in colorectal cancer

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p><it>RAS </it>genes acquire the most common somatic gain-of-function mutations in human cancer, and almost all of these mutations are located at codons 12, 13, 61, and 146.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>We present a method for detecting these <it>K-RAS </it>hotspot mutations in 228 cases of colorectal cancer. The protocol is based on the multiplex amplification of exons 2, 3 and 4 in a single tube, followed by primer extension of the PCR products using various sizes of primers to detect base changes at codons 12, 13, 61 and 146. We compared the clinicopathological data of colorectal cancer patients with the <it>K-RAS </it>mutation status.</p> <p>Results</p> <p><it>K-RAS </it>mutation occurred in 36% (83/228) of our colorectal cancer cases. Univariate analysis revealed a significant association between <it>K-RAS </it>mutation at codon 12 of exon 2 and poor 5-year survival (p = 0.023) and lymph node involvement (p = 0.048). Also, <it>K-RAS </it>mutation at codon 13 of exon 2 correlates with the size of the tumor (p = 0.03). Multivariate analysis adjusted for tumor size, histologic grade, and lymph node metastasis also indicated <it>K-RAS </it>mutations at codon 12 and 13 of exon 2 correlate significantly with overall survival (p = 0.002 and 0.025). No association was observed between codon 61 and 146 and clinicopathological features.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>We demonstrated a simple and fast way to identify <it>K-RAS </it>mutation.</p
