Europe integrates less than you think: Evidence from the market for corporate control in Europe and the US
National borders are still strong barriers for mergers and acquisitions in Europe. We estimate a gravity equation model based on NUTS 2-regions and find that the restraining impact of national borders decreased by about a third between 1990 and 2007. However, there has been no significant change since 1997, i.e., two years before the introduction of the Euro. To benchmark our results we run a corresponding analysis within the United States using the ten federal OMB regions as country equivalents. The 'quasi border'-effect in the US is weaker than in the EU and even declines more during the same time period. We conclude that European integration policy has little effect on fostering cross-border transactions. --European integration,corporate control,border effects
Proposed satellite laser ranging and very long baseline interferometry sites for crustal dynamics investigations
Recommendations are presented for a global network of 125 sites for geodetic measurements by satellite laser ranging and very long baseline interferometry. The sites were proposed on the basis of existing facilities and scientific value for investigation of crustal dynamics as related to earthquake hazards. Tectonic problems are discussed for North America peripheral regions and for the world. The sites are presented in tables and maps, with bibliographic references
The use of happiness research for public policy
Research on happiness tends to follow a "benevolent dictator" approach where politicians pursue people's happiness. This paper takes an antithetic approach based on the insights of public choice theory. First, we inquire how the results of happiness research may be used to improve the choice of institutions. Second, we show that the policy approach matters for the choice of research questions and the kind of knowledge happiness research aims to provide. Third, we emphasize that there is no shortcut to an optimal policy maximizing some happiness indicator or social welfare function since governments have an incentive to manipulate this indicator
Motion of Vacancies in a Pinned Vortex Lattice: Origin of the Hall Anomaly
Physical arguments are presented to show that the Hall anomaly is an effect
of the vortex many-body correlation rather than that of an individual vortex.
Quantitatively, the characteristic energy scale in the problem, the vortex
vacancy formation energy, is obtained for thin films. At low temperatures a
scaling relation between the Hall and longitudinal resistivities is found, with
the power depending on sample details. Near the superconducting transition
temperature and for small magnetic fields the Hall conductivity is found to be
proportional to the inverse of the magnetic field and to the quadratic of the
difference between the measured and the transition temperatures.Comment: minor change
Bolometric and UV Light Curves of Core-Collapse Supernovae
The Swift UV-Optical Telescope (UVOT) has been observing Core-Collapse
Supernovae (CCSNe) of all subtypes in the UV and optical since 2005. We present
here 50 CCSNe observed with the Swift UVOT, analyzing their UV properties and
behavior. Where we have multiple UV detections in all three UV filters (\lambda
c = 1928 - 2600 \AA), we generate early time bolometric light curves, analyze
the properties of these light curves, the UV contribution to them, and derive
empirical corrections for the UV-flux contribution to optical-IR based
bolometric light curves
Scaling regimes and critical dimensions in the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang problem
We study the scaling regimes for the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation with noise
correlator R(q) ~ (1 + w q^{-2 \rho}) in Fourier space, as a function of \rho
and the spatial dimension d. By means of a stochastic Cole-Hopf transformation,
the critical and correction-to-scaling exponents at the roughening transition
are determined to all orders in a (d - d_c) expansion. We also argue that there
is a intriguing possibility that the rough phases above and below the lower
critical dimension d_c = 2 (1 + \rho) are genuinely different which could lead

Dual-Frequency VSOP Observations of AO 0235+164
AO 0235+164 is a very compact, flat spectrum radio source identified as a BL
Lac object at a redshift of z=0.94. It is one of the most violently variable
extragalactic objects at both optical and radio wavelengths. The radio
structure of the source revealed by various ground-based VLBI observations is
dominated by a nearly unresolved compact component at almost all available
frequencies.
Dual-frequency space VLBI observations of AO 0235+164 were made with the VSOP
mission in January-February 1999. The array of the Japanese HALCA satellite and
co-observing ground radio telescopes in Australia, Japan, China and South
Africa allowed us to study AO 0235+164 with an unprecedented angular resolution
at frequencies of 1.6 and 5 GHz. We report on the sub-milliarcsecond structural
properties of the source. The 5-GHz observations led to an estimate of T_B >
5.8 x 10^{13} K for the rest-frame brightness temperature of the core, which is
