Motives for investment in human capital of children: evidence from Indonesian Family Life Survey Data

    Get PDF
Two alternative models of parental investments in children's human capital are considered and tested empirically using the Indonesian Family Life Survey (IFLS). The pure loan model and the reciprocity with two-sided altruism model yield different predictions about the effect of children's education level and number of children on intergenerational transfers. Using these predictions, a specification test is carried out to differentiate these two models with the data. The evidence favors the second model of reciprocity with two-sided altruism.Human capital, pure loan, altruism, Indonesian Family Life Survey Data

Evaluation of a pulsed quasi-steady MPD thruster and associated subsystems

    Get PDF
The performance of quasi-steady magnetoplasmadynamic (MPD) thrusters at high power levels is discussed. An axisymmetric configuration is used for the MPD thruster, with various cathode and anode sizes, over a wide range of experimental conditions. Thrust is determined from impulse measurements with current waveforms, while instantaneous measurements are made for all other variables. It is demonstrated that the thrust produced has a predominately self-magnetic origin and is directly proportional to the square of the current. The complete set of impulse measurement data is presented

Selecting the Best Linear Regression Model: A Classical Approach

    Get PDF
In this paper, we apply the model selection approach based on Likelihood Ratio (LR) tests developed in Vuong (1985) to the problem of choosing between two normal linear regression models which are not nested in each other. First we compare our model selection procedure to other model selection criteria. Then we explicitly derive the procedure when the competing linear models are non-nested and neither one is correctly specified. Some simplifications are seen to arise when both models are contained in a larger correctly specified linear regression model, or when at least one competing linear model is correctly specified. A comparison of our model selection tests and previous non-nested hypothesis tests concludes the paper

Observing Coherence Effects in an Overdamped Quantum System

It is usually considered that the spectrum of an optical cavity coupled to an atomic medium does not exhibit a normal-mode splitting unless the system satisfies the strong coupling condition, meaning the Rabi frequency of the coherent coupling exceeds the decay rates of atom and cavity excitations. Here we show that this need not be the case, but depends on the way in which the coupled system is probed. Measurements of the reflection of a probe laser from the input mirror of an overdamped cavity reveal an avoided crossing in the spectrum which is not observed when driving the atoms directly and measuring the Purcell-enhanced cavity emission. We understand these observations by noting a formal correspondence with electromagnetically-induced transparency of a three-level atom in free space, where our cavity acts as the absorbing medium and the coupled atoms play the role of the control field

Aplikasi Quality Tools untuk Menurunkan Non Conforming Product pada Industri Dry Sls di Indonesia: Studi Kasus PT Kci

    Get PDF
The purpose of this research is to improve the product quality problem experienced by one of dry SLS manufacturing company in Indonesia. The high number of non conforming product during the past year makes the sales target to be unachievable and caused the loss due to many rework process. Tools are used in this research is to apply the seven tools approach. Flowchart, Pareto chart, and histogram are used to calculate and determine the problem to be fixed. Collection of improvement idea is done by brainstorming and improvement analysis is done by using Fishbone diagram. The results of the improvements made good results are marked by decreasing the number and percentage of non conforming product more than 50 percent of the amount of non conforming product on the previous condition prior to the improvement

Nonsurgical Treatment Options for Basal Cell Carcinoma

    Get PDF
Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) remains the most common form of nonmelanoma skin cancer (NMSC) in Caucasians, with perhaps as many as 2 million new cases expected to occur in the United States in 2010. Many treatment options, including surgical interventions and nonsurgical alternatives, have been utilized to treat BCC. In this paper, two non-surgical options, imiquimod therapy and photodynamic therapy (PDT), will be discussed. Both modalities have demonstrated acceptable disease control rates, cosmetically superior outcomes, and short-term cost-effectiveness. Further studies evaluating long-term cure rates and long-term cost effectiveness of imiquimod therapy and PDT are needed

FATIGABILITY OF TRUNK MUSCLES WHEN SIMULATING PUSHING MOVEMENT DURING TREADMILL WALKING

    Get PDF
Pushing is a common movement in moving objects, and it also related to about 9% to 20% low back injuries occurrence (Hoozemans et al., 1998). The purpose of the present study was to examine the effect of fatigue on trunk muscle activity during treadmill walking with and without a pushing movement
