Quantifying the Effect of Non-Larmor Motion of Electrons on the Pressure Tensor
In space plasma, various effects of magnetic reconnection and turbulence
cause the electron motion to significantly deviate from their Larmor orbits.
Collectively these orbits affect the electron velocity distribution function
and lead to the appearance of the "non-gyrotropic" elements in the pressure
tensor. Quantification of this effect has important applications in space and
laboratory plasma, one of which is tracing the electron diffusion region (EDR)
of magnetic reconnection in space observations. Three different measures of
agyrotropy of pressure tensor have previously been proposed, namely,
, and . The multitude of contradictory measures has
caused confusion within the community. We revisit the problem by considering
the basic properties an agyrotropy measure should have. We show that
, and are all defined based on the sum of the
principle minors (i.e. the rotation invariant ) of the pressure tensor. We
discuss in detail the problems of -based measures and explain why they may
produce ambiguous and biased results. We introduce a new measure
constructed based on the determinant of the pressure tensor (i.e. the rotation
invariant ) which does not suffer from the problems of -based
measures. We compare with other measures in 2 and 3-dimension
particle-in-cell magnetic reconnection simulations, and show that can
effectively trace the EDR of reconnection in both Harris and force-free current
sheets. On the other hand, does not show prominent peaks in
the EDR and part of the separatrix in the force-free reconnection simulations,
demonstrating that does not measure all the non-gyrotropic
effects in this case, and is not suitable for studying magnetic reconnection in
more general situations other than Harris sheet reconnection.Comment: accepted by Phys. of Plasm
Communicative success in spatial dialogue: The impact of functional features and dialogue strategies
This paper addresses the impact of dialogue strategies and functional features of spatial arrangements on communicative success. To examine the sharing of cognition between two minds in order to achieve a joint goal, we collected a corpus of 24 extended German-language dialogues in a referential communication task that involved furnishing a dolls’ house. Results show how successful communication, as evidenced by correct placement of furniture items, is affected by a) functionality of the furniture arrangement, b) previous task experience, and c) dialogue features such as description length and orientation information. Turbulent transition in a truncated one-dimensional model for shear flow
We present a reduced model for the transition to turbulence in shear flow
that is simple enough to admit a thorough numerical investigation while
allowing spatio-temporal dynamics that are substantially more complex than
those allowed in previous modal truncations. Our model allows a comparison of
the dynamics resulting from initial perturbations that are localised in the
spanwise direction with those resulting from sinusoidal perturbations. For
spanwise-localised initial conditions the subcritical transition to a
`turbulent' state (i) takes place more abruptly, with a boundary between
laminar and `turbulent' flow that is appears to be much less `structured' and
(ii) results in a spatiotemporally chaotic regime within which the lifetimes of
spatiotemporally complicated transients are longer, and are even more sensitive
to initial conditions. The minimum initial energy required for a
spanwise-localised initial perturbation to excite a chaotic transient has a
power-law scaling with Reynolds number with .
The exponent depends only weakly on the width of the localised perturbation
and is lower than that commonly observed in previous low-dimensional models
where typically . The distributions of lifetimes of chaotic
transients at fixed Reynolds number are found to be consistent with exponential

The Removal of Artificially Generated Polarization in SHARP Maps
We characterize the problem of artificial polarization for the Submillimeter
High Angular Resolution Polarimeter (SHARP) through the use of simulated data
and observations made at the Caltech Submillimeter Observatory (CSO). These
erroneous, artificial polarization signals are introduced into the data through
misalignments in the bolometer sub-arrays plus pointing drifts present during
the data-taking procedure. An algorithm is outlined here to address this
problem and correct for it, provided that one can measure the degree of the
sub-array misalignments and telescope pointing drifts. Tests involving
simulated sources of Gaussian intensity profile indicate that the level of
introduced artificial polarization is highly dependent upon the angular size of
the source. Despite this, the correction algorithm is effective at removing up
to 60% of the artificial polarization during these tests. The analysis of
Jupiter data taken in January 2006 and February 2007 indicates a mean
polarization of 1.44%+/-0.04% and 0.95%+/-0.09%, respectively. The application
of the correction algorithm yields mean reductions in the polarization of
approximately 0.15% and 0.03% for the 2006 and 2007 data sets, respectively.Comment: 19 pages, 7 figure
Optimal randomized multilevel algorithms for infinite-dimensional integration on function spaces with ANOVA-type decomposition
In this paper, we consider the infinite-dimensional integration problem on
weighted reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces with norms induced by an underlying
function space decomposition of ANOVA-type. The weights model the relative
importance of different groups of variables. We present new randomized
multilevel algorithms to tackle this integration problem and prove upper bounds
for their randomized error. Furthermore, we provide in this setting the first
non-trivial lower error bounds for general randomized algorithms, which, in
particular, may be adaptive or non-linear. These lower bounds show that our
multilevel algorithms are optimal. Our analysis refines and extends the
analysis provided in [F. J. Hickernell, T. M\"uller-Gronbach, B. Niu, K.
Ritter, J. Complexity 26 (2010), 229-254], and our error bounds improve
substantially on the error bounds presented there. As an illustrative example,
we discuss the unanchored Sobolev space and employ randomized quasi-Monte Carlo

“It's my language, my culture and it's personal!” Migrant mothers' experience of language use and identity change in their relationship with their children: an interpretative phenomenological analysis
The question of how migrants’ language use impacts their ethnic identity has received considerable attention in the literature. There is, however, little understanding of how this relationship manifests or is negotiated in interethnic families. This paper presents an in-depth exploration of Spanish mothers’ experiences of Spanish- and English-language interactions with their English-born children. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with Spanish mothers living in Britain in interethnic partnerships and transcripts were subjected to interpretative phenomenological analysis. Analysis reveals a process of identity change where participants’ shifting ethnic identifications with host and heritage culture is intimately related to their language use with their children. Pivotal to this process is the participants’ need to maintain their ‘Spanish mother’ identity, a desire that can only be fulfilled by transferring their heritage language to their children and speaking it with them. Findings reveal how this dynamic impacts perception of family roles, relationship quality and psychological well-being
